I don’t understand why my year 7 child who already had Covid will now have to wear a mask in school corridors. Yet, Boris can walk through a hospital(!) and not wear one. When 1000s of leaders and people from all over the world can gather to attend Cop26, no mask.

All this over a new variant which is extremely mild according to the South African health minister. Viruses become more transmissible but less virulent over time. This is exactly what is meant to happen. To push more restrictions on us and our children is nonsensical and completely uncalled for. Forcing people to cover their face is just theatre and nothing more.

Freedom day was promised to be “irreversible”… I can’t take any more of this. I had Covid, I’m newly double jabbed. I eat healthy. I work out 4x per week. I’m young. The dangling of restrictions over our head is causing great anxiety. I feel like I’m in an abusive relationship where I’m gaslighted, taunted and blamed. The abuser is the government.

COP26 and that Boris visit both took place before the new mask mandate.

Are you in England? If so DC only had to wear masks in school before the change if there was an outbreak within the school.

The last sentence totally sums up how I feel. Just so depressed but guess many others are too. Will we ever be free again?

Arr, sorry I meant to quote OP!

Freedom day was promised to be “irreversible

in terms of lockdown I think. Not masks.

RoseAndRose · 28/11/2021 21:13

What do you mean by 'free'

If you mean not locked down and businesses open, then the wearing of masks is of course important to keep those freedoms when a new variant is being assessed

Angel2702 · 28/11/2021 21:14

Our school never removed masks in communal areas to start with.

Trixiefirecracker · 28/11/2021 21:15

It simply isn’t true that viruses always become less virulent over time. This one may be but not enough known about it as yet, good to be cautious.

FenceSplinters · 28/11/2021 21:16

Masks taken off in the classroom, left on dirty desks, then put back on the face, with dirty hands, it’s nonsensical.

Northsoutheastwest76 · 28/11/2021 21:17

I never got the impression freedom day was irreversible. Impossible to know how the Pandemic would progress.

DrWhoNowww · 28/11/2021 21:18

Because you can get COVID twice.

Because schools are one of the few places where you regularly come into contact with hundreds of people who haven’t been fully vaccinated and aren’t required to show proof or recent negative LFT

Because just because your son was ok and you’re healthy doesn’t mean his teachers, school support staff or their families would be so lucky so why wouldn’t you reduce spread if you could?

Because Boris is a total bloody tool and generally doing the opposite of what he does is a better choice than doing what he does.

Because whining about “freedom day” makes you sound like a petulant child.

Any more reasons?

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 28/11/2021 21:22

Viruses become more transmissible but less virulent over time

This is not true. And there is no particular evolutionary pressure for SARS-COV2 to become milder, because it is transmissible before symptoms show. S it doesn't matter how ill (or his dead) it makes its host, because it's moved on to the next one before the illness shows

SweetsMum3 · 28/11/2021 21:26

@UnmentionedElephantDildo

It is very much true. Immunology 101!

“With luck omicron will prove to be not only more infectious but also milder than delta. According to the doctor who diagnosed it, omicron “presents mild disease with symptoms being sore muscles and tiredness for a day or two… They might have a slight cough.” This, plus the effect of the vaccines, means that Britain’s policy of opening up in July, defying the modellers’ apocalyptic obsessions, proved sensible. The virus did not spiral out of control, or overwhelm the NHS, but a series of small waves came and went, as society inched towards an endemic truce with the enemy.”

Omicron may good news. If it spreads fast with mild symptoms it will give full immunity to vaccinated and unvaccinated. Each variant has halved in its case fatality: alpha 1.9%, beta 1.2% and delta 0.51%. So for omicron maybe 0.25%. Let’s be optimistic.

Masks do more harm than good for children.

New Brown Uni study: Social distancing measures incl masks suspected of causing young children's development to drop by up to 23%

'Masks...may impact a range of early developing skills, such as attachment, facial processing & socioemotional processing'

I can’t take any more of this

Can't take any more of what? Wearing a mask for a few minutes here and there? It's really not a big deal.

People act like this kind of anxiety is normal and inevitable but it's not. You can actually get rid of it if you really want to.

Flyonawalk · 28/11/2021 21:40

@SweetsMum3 That’s a great analogy, being in an abusive relationship with the government. You sum up how I feel. Lied to, gaslighted, patronised, all that ‘I will make you safe’ from Boris..!

If a partner did what the government have done we would recognise coercive control. Imagine if a partner said, You can’t leave home except for limited reasons; you can’t meet friends; you can’t have anyone in your home; you must rely on me for money, and when rules change I will tell you.

Thoroughly abusive in my view.

It isn’t just the U.K. though. Joe Biden has been vocal about masks but has been photographed lately just not bothering with one.

It is definitely one rule for the rulers and another for the ruled.

Thank you. I needed some hope as I have been terrified by the latest news, I am usually quite calm about these things but I am desperate to get my terminally ill DH home from hospital so he can die at home. All this talk of a new strain has been hugely stressful.

SweetsMum3 · 28/11/2021 21:41

@dreamingbohemian

It’s just a mask.
It’s just a vaccine.
It’s just a booster.
It’s just a vaccine passport.
It’s just two meters.
It’s just the rule of six.
It’s just a jab for your job.
It’s just to protect the NHS.
It’s just three weeks.

It’s just your freedom.

“Is it really such a big ask?”

FYI. I hate wearing a mask for various reasons. And it’s never “just a few minutes here and there.”

@Flyonawalk

Thank you, Flyona. I believe many feel this way but are too scared to say so. I grew-up with an abusive narcissistic sociopath. The traits of the government aren’t different. I see what they’re doing and they hire behavioral scientists to help them.

I genuinely don't feel any less free because of any of those restrictions OP. That is your choice to feel that way.

And yes, unless you work in a shop or public transport, you currently don't have to wear a mask very often at all.

Sorry cross post

I'm very sorry about how you grew up but I don't think it's good for your mental health to interpret public health measures as abuse. Of course you'll feel anxious if you do.

nordica · 28/11/2021 21:53

Why are lots of young people in South Africa seeking treatment from their doctor for muscle aches and fatigue that lasts for a few days? Doesn't really add up.

Flyonawalk · 28/11/2021 21:53

@bloodywhitecat I hope things go as well as possible for you and your family. Thinking of you.

I think you need to read a bit more, it's been mild in double vaccinated but those who are not have been poorly. Some of the stories circulating are suggesting it's nothing to worry about. I think precautions need to be taken
