Infected twice

How many people do you know who have had it twice?

OP posts:
Cherrydown · 28/11/2021 18:05

Quite a few, 6-12 months between infections

Remmy123 · 28/11/2021 18:05

I know two families that have had it twice - vaccinated and ended up with ambulance coming out for one friend!

theemperorhasnoclothes · 28/11/2021 18:10

OP my understanding is that some countries say you're exempt from isolating etc for 3 months after infection, so I think the general consensus that it's very rare to catch it again in that period.

RaisinFlapjack · 28/11/2021 18:11

Me and DS have had it twice, though not ‘officially’ as first infection was March 2020 so no testing. I know plenty of people who have had it once but no-one else who has had it twice, but I don’t think it’s as rare as is made out.

Neither of us were particularly unwell either time, more like a cold than anything else though DS took a couple of months to totally get over the fatigue and I still have some long covid symptoms from the first infection.

Yes ‘officially’ you can’t get it more than once within 90 days as they don’t allow retesting so it’d be counted as the same infection.
gaslady14 · 28/11/2021 18:13

Loads. But I'm constantly exposed so 🤷🏻‍♀️ one colleague's just tested positive for the third time and the first time he had it twice in 3 months despite weekly negative PCRs in between. Unfortunate

Whathefisgoingon · 28/11/2021 19:18

My cousin caught it twice. Unvaccinated both times though actually got vaccinated whilst they had covid the second time (unbeknownst to them, obviously)

They are early 20’s with no health conditions, second time was worse and they still don’t have their smell or taste back 6 months later Confused

Wineloffa · 28/11/2021 19:40

We all had it last Christmas (confirmed by PCR) and DS aged 10 has it again (confirmed today by PCR). The rest of us are negative so far although DH and I are double jabbed and older DD has one vaccine.

FenceSplinters · 28/11/2021 19:46

A few of my fellow teachers have had it twice, and several children at school.

Mantlemoose · 28/11/2021 19:49

None but then I don't personally know that many people who've had it.

rightsideoftheroad · 28/11/2021 19:53

I wonder why some people get it twice and others don't get it at all? I know someone who had it once, then got double vaccinated and then had it again. I sat next to her in our office both times and have never caught it.

I also stayed in a house with someone (a teacher) who had it for a second time, yet neither me or my husband caught it.

Porfre · 28/11/2021 22:23

For the people who do know others who have had it twice.

Was the second infection much milder?

Bobholll · 28/11/2021 22:36

I’ve had it twice. Last December, it was really mild. And last month in October. It was far worse the second time round (double vaxxed this time as well). Nothing concerning but I did feel really shit for a couple weeks!

My DH hasn’t caught it from me either time. It’s baffling.

Whyarewehardofthinking · 28/11/2021 22:48

I was worse this time, despite the double vaccine. It didn't last as long though. DP was much milder this time but last time he was in hospital and had 5 months off work. Both still ill this time though, a full 4-5 days of barely moving and lots of medications.

DS (18) has it for a second time and seems to be symptom free currently. He was quite poorly last time - very high fever, lethargic, minimal appetite

The data shows that Delta, in the absence of vaccines, is more severe (think of what happened in India with a low rate of vaccination) but the viral dose / load matters too. If you have a high dose, then you'll be iller - severity of disease is linked to high exposure and high viral dose.

It makes sense and is true of other illnesses too

Most of the people I know who've been really awfully ill this time around are those who had high exposure - so they caught it from children in their house that they didn't / couldn't distance or isolate from and had to care for, or are teachers or other professions where they can't distance and with few / no mitigations over long periods of time.

I almost hope that if I catch it I get it from someone in the supermarket rather than one of my kids, but the likelihood is it'll come from them.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 29/11/2021 00:03

I don't know anyone who's had it twice

Porcupineintherough · 29/11/2021 00:16

I know 5 people, including myself and ds1. I dont make antibodies to natural COVID infection so expect to get it again at so.e point, unless the vaccine has managed to generate a few.

Dogatetheleftovers · 29/11/2021 00:47

My dd had it twice, first time in March 2020 although obviously no testing at that time but she was so poorly. Then got it again at the start of this year along with rest of our family.

Ajl46 · 29/11/2021 08:27

One - who was double jabbed the second time she got it. Second episode was milder than the first.

Sammilouwho · 29/11/2021 08:42

My SIL has! Roughly 5 months apart, she's had really bad long covid, still can't smell anything. We've not had it at all (as far as we are aware, and are on week 5 of a cold that is actually just a cold, the people at the PCR drive through even threw a treat for our DD into our car yesterday after us being there every week for the last month).

TheDrsDocMartens · 29/11/2021 08:47

Most of dcs school were off March 2020 and we had a lot of people in the area in hospital with covid so it would make sense they had it (symptoms matched up etc) but obviously no testing. Majority of school have been off this term with positive tests too.

Throughabushbackwards · 29/11/2021 08:53

Me. First had it in March 2020, double jabbed over the summer and have just recovered from another bout last week.

Elephantsparade · 29/11/2021 08:57

They must have done some research now. Are some people more susceptible to it, like certain blood groups.

Realitea · 29/11/2021 09:52

Ds has had it twice. Very ill the first time round, close to needing hospital but just about avoided it. Second time around, no symptoms but then developed long covid. He’s really been through it! (At uni in house shares/halls so lots of mixing and nightclubbing!)
