Omicron - feeling so upset

purplerainnn · 28/11/2021 07:35

I’m feeling really down after the recent news of this Omicron variant. DH has been very ill with Covid (presumably the Delta variant) despite being double jabbed, and is finally on the mend after several weeks of bed rest. I dread to think what could happen to him if he catches this new variant. The thought of it is really frightening.

The possibility of another lockdown is also really worrying me. I have young DC and don’t think I could cope with another lockdown for weeks on end, or another Christmas on our own without seeing family. How likely is it that Christmas won’t go ahead?

Another lockdown will also be a hammer blow to my job, which relies on things being open. The thought of trying to navigate and survive another lockdown is beyond exhausting.

I don’t know what the point of this post is really - I’m just feeling so low this morning and needed to rant.

Err @Flyonawalk peboh's understanding was actually incorrect

@Theturnofthepoo

We don’t have the stomach for another lockdown. So bored of this phrase. Itu docs don’t have the stomach for more patients gurgling on their own fluids with no friendly faces in sight.
Unnecessary

That’s my fear too. I’m not scared of Covid itself at all

I wasn’t hugely scared either - DH and I are both in our early 40s, double jabbed, fit and healthy, so I assumed if we did get it we would shake it off relatively easily. However, seeing how ill my DH has been with this virus has completely changed my view.

BoJo can go fuck himself if he thinks I am giving up Christmas again. We are all double / triple vaccinated, we have lft to use and that’s that.
Only one part of your concern OP but honestly I think if they lockdown there’ll be riots

No there won't be riots because if we need a lockdown it will mean the variant is a massive cause of concern, and people won't want to go out/become exposed. We already know it is twice as transmissible as delta which is really serious, it is highly contagious. Anyway it might be fine yet...
Please try to keep a lid on your reactions, we alq

fairylights unfortunately I think some people would riot. Not everyone is sensible. Just look at people complaining about wearing a mask in a shop Hmm
A very small number can’t wear one. Fair enough. But for most people it’s a bit of a pain but really not a big deal. A few people react as though it is a appalling infringement of their human rights. I’m truly baffled by the attitude.

I really feel for the worse with this news - the Scientists looked really worried - if the virus is not blocked by the current vaccines - we are back to square one- at the worst time of the year when our immune systems are at their lowest, I feel so vulnerable, upset and scared.

I work in a setting where many caught covid in April 2020, then now recently the delta variant too. It took about a year for immunity to drop enough from catching covid the first time to catching it again. Try not to worry as regardless of the new variant and being able to catch it again, previous infection (or vaccination) should mean symptoms are not life threatening.

Thanks for that lovely description of how my mother died, as if my last memory of her being put into an ambulance barely able to breathe was not bad enough, I now have that image in my head. Think before you post next time, some of us are still hurting.
Flyonawalk · 28/11/2021 11:09

@foxgoosefinch My sources tell me this is correct.

Speak for yourself. I'm happy to carry on going out regardless of the variant.
Flyonawalk · 28/11/2021 11:10

@foxgoosefinch I have not found an alternative explanation which covers why the most vaccinated nations on earth have the highest case (not necessarily fatality) numbers.
@foxgoosefinch I have not found an alternative explanation which covers why the most vaccinated nations on earth have the highest case (not necessarily fatality) numbers.
Your explanation is erroneous though. There are lots of reasons for higher published case rates in vaccinated nations - for one, we have fast free testing and a culture of testing, which is simply not available or complied with outside of healthcare settings in most of the developing world.

Viral mutations are caused by changes in the genetic code as as virus replicates. Mutations happen all the time; only some of them go on to change the virus’s genetic makeup significantly. The more replications, the more risk of mutation and of mutations that become new strains. Mutations are likely to arise more frequently in unvaccinated populations because of the higher levels of transmission. Why do you think the main new strains arise in places like India, Brazil, and SA where there are low vaccination rates?

shinynewapple21 · 28/11/2021 11:20

@ElftonWednesday

No point worrying about it unless you are in charge of Covid policy or a vaccine scientist. Bugger all we can do about it other than follow guidance.

That's very true !

foxgoosefinch · 28/11/2021 11:23
@foxgoosefinch My sources tell me this is correct.
What sources? You’ve misunderstood some of the basic ideas of evolutionary theory as well as basic virology; they are common mistakes but they are undoubtedly wrong.

NeverTheHootenanny · 28/11/2021 11:52

I know what you mean OP, it’s just so exhausting. The idea that we could be right back to square one after all this time is devastating.

But I think it’s just far too soon to know what this all means. Personally, I think I’m just going to try to ignore the news as much as possible for the next few weeks, live my life and wait to see what happens next.

This Sad When will we know more?

OP posts:
LaurieFairyCake · 29/11/2021 07:32

We will know more by 3 weeks - we have become fantastic at working out the virus quickly

And don't forget we don't have to start again even if there's vaccine escape - we can just remake our current vaccines

It may also be a 'good' thing long term as it will stop politicians acting like the damn pandemic is over - if they're forced to start vaccinating the whole actual world quickly to prevent more serious mutations to stop the species dying out then they will

At the moment they're acting like Billy Big Bollocks 'oh we've got it all sorted in Europe let's get back to economic growth' Hmm when they need to vaccinate everywhere
