Against hospitalisation / death / Infection?

I read 85 percent protection against death/ hospitalisation today. Does anyone have any insight ?

Looks like protection really crashes in time, especially if you've had Astrazeneca. But the booster bumps your protection right back up.

I had my 2nd Astra Zeneca jab in may, caught covid at the beginning of nov, no idea where from. Dh had the jabs same time as me and he then caught covid from me, dds had jab in aug and sept, they didn’t catch it. Think that’s pretty self explanatory.

ivegotamillionkids · 19/11/2021 20:52

I've had both jabs, and the booster 8 months later. Caught Covid about a week after that so no guarantees. Felt rubbish but could've been worse, I guess I'll never know!

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 19/11/2021 21:32

I had double Pfizer and got covid at the beginning of November. 3 days before my 'exactly 6 months' booster jab appointment.

Cool graph. Where is it from?
manolantern · 19/11/2021 22:04

PingedPotato, the graph is from here. I think it shrank when I reposted it!:

I am 40 but was classed as CEV in feb so had my jabs in feb and may. I am due a booster now. My whole family caught covid 3 weeks ago from my sister who passed it to my DM and DF who then passed it to DH, and 2 DCs (7 and 10). Everyone was ill and felt awful but somehow I didn’t get it (despite drinking from same coke can as DF). I was also very close to my children the whole time. I was doing regular testing as well. No idea why.

TheWildRumpyPumpus · 19/11/2021 22:09

I had my second AstraZeneca in April, caught Covid in October. I was still masking, avoiding crowded places as much as possible, but was back working in person.

Had my booster last week so fingers crossed that’s it for another few months!

ivegotamillionkids · 19/11/2021 22:18

@Holdingbacktheflood

2 of our DCs escaped too despite being in very close contact. So weird isn't it?

Holdingbacktheflood · 19/11/2021 22:26

@ivegotamillionkids
It’s so strange and while I’m glad I was well and able to look after my family, I’m worried that I’m going to get it at a later date! Maybe I have antibodies but it all seems so random. (And I am not the fittest of people at the best of times) 🤷‍♀️

blueshiningsea · 19/11/2021 22:29

My twin daughter didn’t give her covid to her twin and they share a bunk bed and are with each other all the time. Weird.

The weekly UKHSA surveillance report has the most up to date figures. See attached pics for effectiveness against symptomatic illness and hospitalisation.

In general AZ seems to be waning more significantly, which is ironic given until very recently Sarah Gilbert and co were claiming AZ would be more durable than the mRNA vaccines.

This article from the Zoe app study has some interesting information.

Delatron · 19/11/2021 22:39

I wonder why there’s so little focus on t-cells? It’s all about waning antibodies.
Yet we know the immune system is more complex than that.

HesterShaw1 · 19/11/2021 23:21

I had my second jab in June, caught Covid in August.

Who the fuck knows? Frankly I'm close to not caring.

Angel2702 · 20/11/2021 09:09

I had az H had Pzizer second doses in May. Both DS had one dose of pzizer nobody in our house caught covid when my daughter had it.

Both DH and O had booster last week, DS had his 2nd dose yesterday as he is on the 12-15 vulnerable list so was able to get two doses.

All I want is for us not to get Covid between now and Christmas, having had to cancel everything in October half term I really don’t want to have to cancel our Christmas activities and lose even more money. And after last year all I want is a normal Christmas with family.

Estimated BNT162b2 effectiveness against any SARS-CoV-2 infection was negligible in the first 2 weeks after the first dose. It increased to 36.8% (95% confidence interval [CI], 33.2 to 40.2) in the third week after the first dose and reached its peak at 77.5% (95% CI, 76.4 to 78.6) in the first month after the second dose. Effectiveness declined gradually thereafter, with the decline accelerating after the fourth month to reach approximately 20% in months 5 through 7 after the second dose. Effectiveness against symptomatic infection was higher than effectiveness against asymptomatic infection but waned similarly. Variant-specific effectiveness waned in the same pattern. Effectiveness against any severe, critical, or fatal case of Covid-19 increased rapidly to 66.1% (95% CI, 56.8 to 73.5) by the third week after the first dose and reached 96% or higher in the first 2 months after the second dose; effectiveness persisted at approximately this level for 6 months.

I had vivid in October - 4 months after Pfizer - Covid was rife where I work so not surprised!

  • a better question would be how long you have natural protection from Covid.
Chasingsquirrels · 20/11/2021 10:12

My ONS bloods shows positive for antibodies bodies 1 & 2 months after my 2nd jab. Missed moth 3 and then showed negative at month 4. They are late contacting me for month 5. I'm waiting to book my booster when it opens for under 50s.

Just checked and let me book, although page not updated to say open yet.
FuzzyPuffling · 20/11/2021 10:35

I had AZ/AZ and now, more than 6 months after dose 2 I am still showing positive for antibodies (ONS study, so I'm tested monthly).
I have my booster booked fro this Friday.

This is great and what I was looking for. The protection against severe outcomes is still very good according to this. Even 6 months later !

bumbleymummy · 20/11/2021 10:54

Yep! Not so good against infection/transmission but at least protecting against serious illness in the majority - immunity in more vulnerable groups tends to wane more quickly hence the need for their boosters.

Ki0612 · 20/11/2021 11:13

Had astra zenecca in may a couple of weeks off booster and i now have covid. Never felt so ill in my life. My husband who had booster hasn't caught it. So i think it wears off but booster helps again.

mamakoukla · 20/11/2021 11:22

It depends on what formulation the vaccinations were, whether it was mixed or not eg AZ then mRNA, interval between first and second dose. Add in individual variation….
