Change in policy announced today. Thinking thins might be useful information if you’ve got a child of this age due to be vaccinated who has recently has covid.

I've just read this. DS(13) had the vaccine on Monday, 5 weeks and 3 days after his positive test. Trying not to worry.

Wakemeuuuup · 17/11/2021 17:02

So advise for 12 -15 yr olds hasn't actually changed, still just 1 dose

The change is in the length of time advised between a positive covid infection and having the vaccine. It has been increased from 4 weeks to 12 weeks.

What’s changed is that previously if they’d had covid, they needed to wait 4 weeks. Now that’s been extended to 12 weeks. Sorry if that wasn’t clear.

I think about the 43,000 people who got wrongly advised they didn’t have Covid following the PCR test fiasco! I bet a lot of those people were 12-15 year olds who went back to school thinking they didn’t have Covid. Will those people now go back to believing the LFD tests? How will they ‘prove’ they had Covid if they want to travel and can’t get vaccinated? What a mess!

Remmy123 · 17/11/2021 17:09

Most kids have already had Covid without even knowing so how can you judge wheh is the best time!!

I'm just holding off for now until they stop going back and forth

PurpleDaisies · 17/11/2021 17:09

I’m not quite sure how that’s relevant here @DebratsEtiquette? I’ve still got covid brain fog so I might just be being slow.

Oh sorry, @PurpleDaisies and @cheeseismydownfall . I missed that

PurpleDaisies · 17/11/2021 17:20

I think I see what you mean @DebratsEtiquette. Is it that parents should use a positive lft to start the twelve week wait for vaccination rather than believe a negative pcr?

That lab thing was bloody awful. Both dh and I got covid because of the explosion in cases due to the complete cock up there and I still feel bitter about it.

DebratsEtiquette · 17/11/2021 17:27

I suppose it’s not that relevant - I just was wondering out loud whether if people believed their children had Covid in September based on LFD they’d put off having the vaccine whereas if you went with the PCR test result you’d be more inclined to be vaccinated.

PurpleDaisies · 17/11/2021 17:28

Honestly, it wasn’t a criticism. I’m having trouble thinking straight at the moment and I couldn’t immediately see it.

Interesting.

Ds currently has covid. He is 17 years 9 months and 1 week and I was about to book his 2nd jab for the end of this month.

I'm guessing he comes under the 18 plus category now but I had already said to dh last night that I might see if he wanted to wait until after xmas to take advantage of the natural imminuty.

I will have a read now but is it because of the cardiomyopathy risk?

MrsBungle · 17/11/2021 17:32

Great, last week DD had her jab 4 weeks and 1 day after having had covid!

Comefromaway · 17/11/2021 17:33

or rather myocarditus?

legosnowqueen · 17/11/2021 17:41

Thanks for sharing this OP

DebratsEtiquette · 17/11/2021 17:47

For adults there was an issue of weighing up the fact that efficacy was optimal after xx time (sorry can’t remember time) versus chance of catching it before fully covered by getting both vaccines. I went for the prevention over longer term immunity route and got vaccinated after 5 weeks I think - will never know if that was the right approach. Not sure on the current reasoning for extending the time for children.

DebratsEtiquette · 17/11/2021 17:50

Sorry, that’s between vaccine doses, not having Covid and then the vaccine … that probably wasn’t very clear (nor relevant, again!).

Watapalava · 17/11/2021 18:00

to previous pp - under 16 can't get travel passport anyway- covid passes aren't valid in under 16 UK so won't be an issue. Plus most countries don't accept UK evidence of covid infection. DD has covid now - we didn't pcr as no benefit. She was symptomatic and had 4 positive lft so no purpose to PCR. We informed contacts and she isolated accordingly

DebratsEtiquette · 17/11/2021 18:08

Travel insurance for foreign school trips, for my children (within the 12-15 yr age category) stipulates that children be vaccinated if they are to be covered.

Watapalava · 17/11/2021 18:15

Debrats - my teens are going skiing with school in Feb and we've been told kids are fine if travelling with vax teachers? Holiday still going ahead currently....

DebratsEtiquette · 17/11/2021 18:18

Different schools/trips with different insurance policies.

Favourites · 17/11/2021 18:49

Ds had covid in September. I withdrew consent for his vaccine this week after deciding we would wait longer - so relieved that I did this now.

Flidina · 17/11/2021 19:50

Does anyone know, how you withdraw consent? My son is due to have it next week, but is only 5 weeks post covid, and we would prefer to wait a little longer.

tootyfruitypickle · 17/11/2021 19:52

I've just emailed the school and told dd not to go down for it

I’m expecting that now they won’t be able to have it rather than needing to decide to wait. The green book guidance has now been updated and this is what the vaccinators will be following.
