Is everyone PCR testing for cold symptoms?

OP posts:
thaegumathteth · 17/11/2021 09:25

Not a runny nose but for a cough or temp I would yes

TankFlyBoss · 17/11/2021 09:29

No, no cough or temperature just runny nose

I did lft’s - 4 of them were negative and then last Saturday it turned positive so then I did pcr

frenchiemummy92 · 17/11/2021 09:33

Coughs, temps and sniffles yes. I've currently got DD2 off again as school won't accept her without a negative PCR due to "cold" symptoms. She does look poorly though although she's her normal self personality wise 🤣.

MeetMeAtOurSpot · 17/11/2021 09:35

Plenty of posts on here saying they had cold symptoms, or the only symptom they had was a runny nose and tested positive so yes, I’d get a test.

PingedPotato · 17/11/2021 09:37

LFTs yes PCR no, not unless it's an official symptom.

Brokenrecord3006 · 17/11/2021 10:43

Not anymore, as we were testing for every bad cough and cold and it was never Covid.

wendz86 · 17/11/2021 11:03

My daughter just had a runny nose for first few days of covid. I lft tested her as a lot of kids in her year had it and she was positive. She didn't get a cough till a few days later.

Calee03 · 17/11/2021 11:03

Dd had what seemed like w cold at the weekend. She was very speedy and coughing plus a headache. Got her a pcr test and it was negative so yes just a cold it seems BUT she's been a very close contact of someone with covid (not been officially told by the school mind) so I'm not sure whether I should re test her. She's better now though...

ChimChimeny · 17/11/2021 12:25

DD had a runny nose & a bit of a wet cough (from not blowing her nose!) so we just did a LFT.

She's missed 3 days of school in the last 3 weeks (1 day waiting for PCR when she had a temp) & 2 for vomiting so I don't want to keep her off unless necessary.

FirewomanSam · 17/11/2021 12:32

Runny nose is the most common symptom of Covid in fully vaccinated people, according to the Zoe symptom study. Yes I would absolutely test for cold symptoms.

covid.joinzoe.com/post/new-top-5-covid-symptoms#part_1

My own Covid started as a mild sore throat.

FirewomanSam · 17/11/2021 12:33

Sorry, just saw you said PCR. No, I’d do a LFT and only do PCR if that was positive.

emmathedilemma · 17/11/2021 13:27

I do the Zoe symptom tracker app and that recommended I got a PCR test when I reported having cold symptoms a couple of weeks ago. I'd already done a LFT which was negative and it felt like a classic cold but went for a PCR as offered and I'd probably have booked one anyway before going back into group situations or the office. PCR was negative as are subsequent LFTs but I can't shift the tail end of this damn cold!

SilverGlitterBaubles · 17/11/2021 13:28

Absolutely those were my symptoms and most people I know have cold like symptoms and were positive.

Sparkle275 · 18/11/2021 06:20

Whenever my kids have a cold we do a LFT but if it's causing a cough or temp then we get a PCR.

Exhausteddog · 19/11/2021 22:33

DS currently has covid. The only symptom was a slightly blocked nose that I would especially have thought to test but it came up positive straight away on a regular lateral flow test and was confirmed by PCR. Everyone else on the house has a cold with more symptoms and has had negative lfts and pcrs!Confused

sofakingcool · 20/11/2021 00:20

In honesty, no I don't .

I LFT regularly (2-3 times a week), but I work in a high risk of picking up illnesses job (childcare!) and I'm the type to pick them up. During the autumn/winter I'm regularly unwell, I couldn't be testing every time - and isolating in the meantime. My boss would go nuts if we all did that.

I am carefully watching my symptoms though, and any sign of a cough or fever then of course I'd PCR test then.

TreaslakeandBack · 20/11/2021 15:43

If you get a PCR for mild cold- runny nose and sore throat - advised by Zoe - do you SI while waiting for the results?
I have a cold- tired with scratchy throat and runny nose but no temp/ cough/ smell taste loss. Zoe advised PCR so I had one yesterday but no results yet.
We have a day out tomorrow that I don’t want to miss unless positive.
I am treble jabbed and had Covid in May. Thanks.

RichTeaRichTea · 20/11/2021 15:45

Not PCR for a sniffle no - cough temp loss of smell/taste yes. If I did PCR for every sniffle we would be isolating awaiting results on a weekly basis with toddlers

RichTeaRichTea · 20/11/2021 15:48

I’m guessing that anyone going straight to PCRs just for runny noses doesn’t get them very often and/or doesn’t have obligations outside the house!

TreaslakeandBack · 20/11/2021 17:54

Negative 🎉
I have only been ill once since Feb 2020 and I did have Covid that time. DS9 has had 2 colds that weren’t Covid in that time and when he had it was asymptomatic.

Katie517 · 20/11/2021 22:36

So basically you are all lying on the form to get a PCR for cold symptoms? Ridiculous you obviously have no work or family commitments if you can afford to isolate while you wait for the results for every little sniffle!

Warhertisuff · 20/11/2021 22:44

@frenchiemummy92

Coughs, temps and sniffles yes. I've currently got DD2 off again as school won't accept her without a negative PCR due to "cold" symptoms. She does look poorly though although she's her normal self personality wise 🤣.
Surely a school has no right to do this? A negative PCR should suffice... If my child was otherwise well enough to be in school I would absolutely not accept the school's refusal to accept them.
middleager · 20/11/2021 23:02

I did a LFT as I have cold symptoms. It was negative.

When I had Covid (double vaccinated) the LFT was very reliable. It was the first positive LFT ever, then went on to be a positive PCR. Same for my son. He tested twice weekly for school, so when his first positive came up (he had a headache and sniffle) we knew it was different.

Exhausteddog · 21/11/2021 16:34

So basically you are all lying on the form to get a PCR for cold symptoms?

Last year my DC school asked parents to get children tested for cold symptoms....because they noticed thats how covid presented in young children.

. I've read that the delta variant presented more like a cold and actually the zoe app guides you to get a test with all kinds of symptoms.
The UK government haven't updated the symptom list but in various other countries they would say test with cold symptoms. I've tested twice (a week apart) with cold symptoms because DS had covid. His only symptom was a slightly blocked nose for a couple of days - none of the 3 "main" symptoms - it was picked up on a LFT.
