URGENT - Should I get booster if DD has covid?

Pennguin · 16/11/2021 10:05

My DD wasn't feeling well this morning, stomach ache. Did a LFT and after 15 mins there was no second line, she felt better and went to school. I had another look at it when I got back from the school run and there is now a line on it! I don't think it's an evaporation line as it's quite thick but faint.

I'm about to leave to go and get my booster as I'm a carer. Should I still get it? Would it be bad if I got the booster and covid at the same time?

I'm planning on picking up DD on my way home and getting her a PCR.

Yes you can still have your booster. They’ll only say no if you’ve got confirmed infection.

PurpleDaisies · 16/11/2021 10:07

If you think your daughter is positive, you need to phone the school now so they can isolate her.

Pennguin · 16/11/2021 10:08

Yes I've already called the school. I'm just worried that if I have the booster and get covid at the same time will that make me more ill?

The official guidance on this is here under precautions. It says vaccination is unlikely affect your course of covid (if you got it). It might be a bit more miserable having side effects from the booster and covid at the same time.

If you’re worried you could just postpone your booster.

Errr you should be picking your daughter up straight away, not leaving her at school where she could potentially be infecting others!
You will just have to rebook your booster.

Heckythump1 · 16/11/2021 10:19

And you also shouldn't be going to get the booster as you've obviously now been in contact with someone with covid, so if you have it, you could spread it to everyone in the vaccination centre.

SummerHouse · 16/11/2021 10:20

I would be more worried about passing it on and DD in school for longer than necessary. Have you got a clear LFT yourself?

DS had the jab three days before positive test. He was not affected but only 12 so was likely to get mild or no symptoms.

That’s not the case unless the op has to isolate. She’s double vaxxed.

I'm aware she doesn't have to self-isolate... but really is it wise to be going to a vaccination centre where there's a huge number of people who are only just getting vaccinated... when you could potentially have covid?

Pennguin · 16/11/2021 10:24

Thanks @PurpleDaisies that's really helpful.

You don't need to isolate as a close contact any more. I will be wearing PPE and I have a negative LFT so I'm no more of a risk to staff at the vaccination centre than anyone else.

I don't even know if DD has covid as she's had a couple of false positive LFTs before followed by negative PCRs. It's odd.

The school is further away than the vaccination centre so it will only delay me by 10 minutes. I think that's worth it for me to be at lower risk of passing on covid to vulnerable patients.

Vaccination centres aren’t full of huge numbers of people getting first doses any more.

They’re usually strict on distancing and insist on mask wearing, hand hygiene etc.

The vast majority of people at vaccination centres now are there for boosters.

How will it only take ten minutes? You have to wait for fifteen after being jabbed.

TakeYourFinalPosition · 16/11/2021 10:34

I’d rebook the booster and pick DD up ASAP; but mostly because I wouldn’t want to be responsible for potentially infecting somewhere on that scale - and there may be well pregnant people or vulnerable people who are getting first doses.

You’re technically right that you don’t have to delay, though, so you just have to make the call that you’re most comfortable with.

You’ll have more than a 10 min delay to get DD, though. You have to wait for 15 mins after the jab; and then travel time - if you mean the school & the hub are 10 mins apart, you’ll be at least 25 mins later, plus any waiting time.

PingedPotato · 16/11/2021 10:36

Redo the LFT you aren't meant to read it after the time is up

gogohm · 16/11/2021 10:36

I thought it the line appeared later it wasn't valid anyway?

PurpleDaisies · 16/11/2021 10:40

Yesterday about 20,000 people in the whole country were getting first doses. There are over 2,500 vaccination sites. That’s an average of 8 first doses per site. The op doesn’t have to be in close contact with anyone except the vaccinator.

I’m all for minimising risk but cancelling the booster dose on the basis of a possible positive lft that might have come up outside the time frame seems excessive to me.

We had a late line appearance. I grabbed my coat and covid net and hunted DS down who was on his way to school. PCR tests that day showed we were all positive.
Pennguin · 16/11/2021 10:44

I agree. I have to balance the risk as a carer of me not getting my booster as well. I'm already 6 months and 2 weeks from my second dose.

I was never made to wait 15 mins after my jab before, I went straight home both times!

OP posts:
Pennguin · 16/11/2021 10:46

I'm also suspicious of the positive LFT as we've been down that road before. It only seems to affect her for some reason.

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 16/11/2021 10:46

Were you past the time for checking the LFT I.e. they normally say ignore any result after the timeframe stated

dementedpixie · 16/11/2021 10:47

My dd has had 2 pfizer doses and was told.to wait 15 minutes afterwards. Same when I took my mum for her booster

DementedPanda · 16/11/2021 10:51

I'm guessing school has already isolated the child.

I'd nip in and have the booster if it's on your way.

KylieKoKo · 16/11/2021 11:42

I don't think lft results are valid after 15 - 30 minutes. If it wasn't positive by then then it's negative. You don't need to do anything. If you're concerned at this stage then do another lft tomorrow.

My husband had his booster the day after we think he was infected with Covid. His Covid really wasn't too bad. I think I felt sicker than he did (he kindly passed it on to me).
