Mask wearing where you live?

julieca · 14/11/2021 00:22

Went to the supermarket today which was busy and only a few people were wearing masks. Nearly everyone was not. I have noticed over the last few months the amount of mask-wearing going down, and now very few people wear masks outside of the GPs surgery 9where they are still compulsory).
So are people wearing masks where you live, or have they mainly given up?

NW. virtually nobody wearing them, even in the pharmacy attached to the GP where you're meant to
I went to sainsburys the other day and saw maybe 4 people with one

ISpyCobraKai · 14/11/2021 02:02

Scotland.
Most do, I don't, but I do wear an exemption lanyard, mostly, I do forget it sometimes.
I've had no bother, or questions asked, even in a medical setting recently when I went for my booster.

Mantlemoose · 14/11/2021 02:17

I'm in Scotland and apart from the usual suspects who are exempt haven't seen anyone not wearing them.

Mifacagare · 14/11/2021 02:48

Mandatory indoors here in Italy, so 100% wear them still (76%of the population are fully vaccinated) They are worn outside too where social distancing is not possible.

MajorCarolDanvers · 14/11/2021 03:32

I live in Scotland so it's bloody masks everywhere still.

Starryskiesinthesky · 14/11/2021 03:59

I’m in Scotland and quite happy to keep wearing my mask. Wear it is shops, restaurants etc and at work if we are within 2 metres of someone.

There are lots of people who claim to be exempt though. Just have to avoid them as they can’t be challenged despite a lot having no valid reason.

giggly · 14/11/2021 04:03

@ParkheadParadise

As well as wearing a mask I'm still using hand sanitiser and cleaning my trolley at the supermarket. Wouldn't say I'm paranoid about covid ( had it 6 weeks ago) it's more a habit now.
Keeps the nippy air from my face as well, win win. I swim in a hotel that had English Police officers billeted there during COP26 and none of them wore a mask when moving about the hotel, gave me the rage. When in Rome.....
DeadoftheMoon · 14/11/2021 04:09

Only me and one or two other elderly. People seem to assume you are ill if you are wearing a mask. NW England.

EshanM73 · 14/11/2021 04:20

Where i am (Yorkshire) nobody wears masks practically at supermarkets, i tend to just for myself giving how some of them are quiet crowded and cases seem to be on the rise but if its not busy i usually dont

RichTeaRichTea · 14/11/2021 05:22

I am just outside London and plenty of mask wearing here. I went into London for work last week and it was the same. I work in medical and educational settings so it is more common, but I still see lots of masks in shops and in public transport. England and London are big places and it seems to really vary by area and type of indoor setting.

I’m amazed people aren’t aware that masks are mandated in Scotland

CanadianJohn · 14/11/2021 05:34

I'm in Ontario, in Canada. Masks are required indoors in most places, and as far as I've seen mask-wearing is close to 100%. I rarely leave this quiet suburb, so it might not be the same elsewhere in the city.

rrhuth · 14/11/2021 05:39

It varies enormously depending where I go, and I've struggled to see a clear pattern. I wear mine indoors. Sometimes people look at my as if I am doing something really unusual.

Given Johnson wouldn't wear one in a hospital despite being asked three times, it's not surprising people have followed his lead.

RichTeaRichTea · 14/11/2021 05:47

Do you think most people who aren’t wearing masks are really paying attention to what Boris Johnson is personally doing on a daily basis? Maybe they are, I don’t know

User5632986 · 14/11/2021 05:49

About half and half here, I don't wear one in somewhere like M&S or the supermarket where people can keep out of my way and I am going to the cafe probably anyway where no-one wears masks but do in places like the small independent cake shop where the assistant is in a small space, most people seem to do that judging by the lack of masks in large shops and lots of people wearing them in places where you are in very close proximity to other people

violetanemone · 14/11/2021 06:07

Probably about half of people wearing them in most places.

I went to France recently and the difference was stark compared to hear. Everyone wearing masks on the subway, had to have a Covid pass to get into restaurants etc. It felt very safe and sensible compared to here.

violetanemone · 14/11/2021 06:07

*compared to HERE

strawberrydonuts · 14/11/2021 06:13

@RoseRedRoseBlue

The problem with mask wearing is the contradiction. People will moan about a lack of mask wearing in the supermarket due to risk, but will happily sit in coffee shops and restaurants for hours on end without one and are prepared to accept the risk in those environments. This is despite the fact that supermarkets are far more spacious and you are less likely to linger.
This is true but there obviously has to be a compromise in order to keep things running. There is more risk when people are moving around. In a supermarket you are walking around and could come within a metre or two of a few hundred people.

In a restaurant/ cafe, you will be seated and will potentially be within a couple of metres of the tables next to you, but it won't be hundreds of people. I would still put on a mask to walk around/ go to the loo etc.

There is obviously still risk, especially if the ventilation is poor, but it's a balance - no one would go to restaurants if they had to sit there in masks the whole time.

SquirmOfEels · 14/11/2021 06:23

I'm a Londoner, and was really struck when I visited a large town in the Midlands during half term that there was far less mask wearing there than in the capital

MarshaBradyo · 14/11/2021 06:28

In London it depends what you’re doing but still evident. Some PT over half, some museums under that.

Cases are generally lower here compared to rest of map but probably higher immunity than mask wearing.

Germany was low a few weeks ago but very steep increase with higher grade masks and more wearing them.

DoraMaude · 14/11/2021 06:30

Interesting how perceptions vary. I'm in London and I'd say pretty much no-one wearing a mask anywhere. Understandable, as it's not compulsory. On TFL services it's supposed to be mandatory but I would say compliance is less than half. I was on a bus a couple of days ago and 3 of 13 passengers were wearing masks.

Currently many London boroughs have low rates of covid.

Stuffin · 14/11/2021 06:40

Very few still wearing a mask including me. I ditched them as soon as it wasn't mandated in most setting in England and very happy with that decision.

I won't be putting one on in any situation that does not mandate it and then only if I have no choice other than to attend.

redandwhite1 · 14/11/2021 06:44

Yes but in wales, close to the border so go to England a lot (Bristol) and life in England is totally normal unlike here where you have to wear a mask pretty much everywhere

Greytminds · 14/11/2021 06:44

It’s really varied where we are in Birmingham. Shopping in Aldi, less than half the shoppers were wearing masks but compliance is notably higher in our local Waitrose. On buses it’s mixed, maybe 50:50. I tend to wear mine in shops, public transport, and did recently for a school visit even outside. I think they should be mandatory for indoor public places personally.

redandwhite1 · 14/11/2021 06:46

@IncyWinceySpiderWillies

Why would people be wearing masks OUTSIDE the gp surgery?
Mask wearing outside in spain was compulsory during the high point of the pandemic and probably other countries, so very normal in a lot of places!!
Chunkymenrock · 14/11/2021 06:48

Yes, everyone in shops is as compulsory here in Wales. I'm so glad it is.
