Has anyone else seen the news about the approval of Molnupiravir.

Surely this has to be a game changer now.

It will certainly help things to go in the right direction but I’m sure someone will be along soon to piss all over your chips.

Was going to post something similar.

😂

True.

SpringRainbow · 04/11/2021 18:16

Does this now have to go through the JCVI and then Chris Witty before it can actually be used?

ApolloandDaphne · 04/11/2021 18:17

They don't make the names easy to pronounce do they?

@SpringRainbow

It’s already gone through that process. It’s approved for use.

No - there’s some bonkers names out there. I think the ‘vir’ bit is used at the end of modern antivirals and according to wiki:

The name of the drug was inspired by that of Thor's hammer, Mjölnir. The idea is that the drug will strike down the virus, like a mighty blow from the god of thunder

The immunosuppressants are where the names turn into proper tongue twisters Grin

SpringRainbow · 04/11/2021 18:23

Thanks @Iwannabelikeyouohh, that is very good news then!

lurker101 · 04/11/2021 18:23

JCVI is Joint Committee for Vaccinations and immunisations. As this is a drug/treatment it should be outside their realm, so MHRA approval should be all that’s required as I understand it

Scottishgirl85 · 04/11/2021 18:33

Nothing to do with JCVI. MHRA assess like they do every drug for UK now we've left EU, then access is worked out ie availability on NHS (via NICE). The INN name is a scientific name for the type of product, then there is a Tradename which is easier for patients to pronounce.

Scottishgirl85 · 04/11/2021 18:34

Lagevrio is tradename

And we can all guess which poster it will be 😁

Beekindbeehumble · 04/11/2021 18:51

I wonder how people can get it? Is it Gp based, if so that can put more pressure on them, as many people are not easily able to access gp services.

ErrolTheDragon · 04/11/2021 19:16

I don't know, but it's mechanism of action sounds very clever.

Cornettoninja · 04/11/2021 19:20

It would make sense to me to access it through 119 and pharmacists @Beekindbeehumble but then I don’t know how much physical assessment of a patient would be needed. A pharmacist should be able to perform the basics but the. It depends if they’re on board with assessing covid patients.

waltzingparrot · 04/11/2021 19:21

Lagevrio is tradename
Well it may be shorter, but even that doesn't roll of the tongue Grin
Beekindbeehumble · 04/11/2021 19:56

Sounds amazing, especially if people can access it easily.

Good to see more treatments coming through.

Scottishgirl85 · 04/11/2021 20:47

It's a prescription only medicine (POM) so won't be in pharmacist/over the counter. Will have to be prescribed by doctor. It is also subject to additional monitoring and the marketing authorisation is conditional at this stage whilst more data is generated.

sleepwouldbenice · 04/11/2021 21:14

Someone will also be along to say it’s all big pharma medicine and somehow the govt out to control everyone

And if we are lucky we will get masks and vaccine passports thrown in

sleepwouldbenice · 04/11/2021 21:14

Otherwise great news😉

How dare people question? It is so uncool these days.

Tealightsandd · 04/11/2021 21:39

It's very good news. It's the Merck drug I was posting about a while back.

As supply is initially so limited, I hope we are also now using or going to start using monoclunal antibody treatment also. A bit more expensive but in many cases lifesaving. Other countries are already using it.

No just rather predictable
fournonblondes · 05/11/2021 14:10

No just rather predictable

You mean like Pfizer announcing the day after kind of predictable or when Pfizer announced the vaccine few days after US elections?

Fucking obvious is a bloody business and politicians are up to their necks involved.
