16-17 yr old second vaccine

Hi. I know this has been talked about a lot but all seems to have gone quiet on this.

Has anyone seen any update on 16-17yr olds getting second jabs approved? My DS is now way past 8 weeks after his first and would love to get his second - I can't find any update so presume there's has been none, but very surprised the press aren't picking this up! I understand the reasons for the caution, but would just like for him to have the choice at this stage. He would not get it under any of the cater/CEV etc rules btw.

TIA, if anyone has seen anything I've missed!

We are in the same position.

Several reports in the papers today that an announcement that they’ve approved second doses for 16/17 year old is imminent. From what I’ve read, they will need to be 12 weeks post first vaccination to get it.

Dd 1 coming up to 12 weeks. Dh who was ECV about to hit 6 months and no news. I hit 6 months in a few weeks too.

Backofbeyond50 · 04/11/2021 07:09

So on theory all 3 should be jabbed this month if announcement correct.

LefttoherownDevizes · 04/11/2021 07:18

DS16 is CEV and we had to try three times and get the GP to write several different letters to get his second. Despite both the NHS and the Evelina whom he is under writing and texting him to get it done at 8 weeks.

Only saying this to say just because the rules change it may take some time for this to filter down into actual practice

Thanks for the replies. Looks positive that some news should come soon then - thanks for the links!

Still nothing on this it seems - so frustrating!

I am so frustrated, too. My teenager is over 12 weeks after his first vaccine. I do not understand why those who understand the risks and want to have the vaccine cannot get it. I got so hopeful when I read reports that an announcement is due last week.

Wellbythebloodyhell · 13/11/2021 19:20

At the moment there is no plan to double vaccinate what is referred to as "healthy" under 18s, only those deemed "at risk", who live with someone immune compromised, ie eligible for a 3rd dose not booster, or who work in the health or care setting will receive 2 doses.

Cheesecake53 · 13/11/2021 19:22

We know :(

Mine is way past 12 weeks. Won't be 18 until end of July - 11 months after the first jab. Wondering whether one will be enough to count as fully vaxed with such a long gap. Worried as she will start uni in September, so needs to be fully protected then.

My DS is 16 so won't be eligible any time soon for a second under the current rules. It just seems so strange compared with other countries.

We are on 12 weeks today and no news. Selfishly would like to book a holiday but don't want the 16 year old left behind, as the youngest Smile

Holidays are rearing their heads here too! We love going to France but at the moment it looks pointless for a single jabbed teen. And it's not the only place - so frustrating. And surely a second jab for the teens will help keep numbers down....

I wonder whether they don't want to allow second jabs for 16-17-year-olds yet in case it diverts resources away from giving booster jabs to those aged 50+ or otherwise vulnerable.

overthethamesfromyou · 14/11/2021 13:14

Is the 'second' jab the same as the 'booster' jab?

Clutterbugsmum · 14/11/2021 13:20

My 17 had her second yesterday and it seems that they have to be 17years and 9months when they can have the second vaccine.

We were actually able to book it via the Coronavirus Vaccination Booking and it will only allow if you able to.

She did get a letter from NHS asking her to book this week as well.

beggsie · 14/11/2021 13:35

There's a big article in the Times today about the challenges of holidays with single jabbed teens so at least it is finally being talked about from that point of view. I am just keen for no more school disruption and the second jab seems a good option for those who want it.

I did wonder this too.

I can only assume teens aren't getting the second dose so boosters can be given to older people.

DH is waiting for his booster. I've just had Covid and if I had to choose between DH getting his booster and DD having a second does, I'd chose DH.

It is frustrating about holidays - there is so much I'd like DD to experience and it just doesn't seem possible any time soon.

Have you tried this website?
www.nhs.uk/service-search/find-a-walk-in-coronavirus-covid-19-vaccination-site

If you put in your postcode it gives you a list of walk-in locations near to you, and if you click on any location, it tells you the ages to which jabs are offered.

Our 16-year old got his jab in that way. It allowed him to visit more safely with a severely immunocompromised close relative whom he had not seen since before the pandemic started in early 2020, which was meaningful for him and for that relative.

TwoBlueFish · 14/11/2021 15:00

My DS17 has just been 2nd jabbed but I think that’s because he’s listed with the GP as a young carer.

Was that his first or second jab?

Second jab.
