dd finally has an operation date - how long should I keep her off school (covid)?

dd15 has finally got an operation date to fix her knee. She's been waiting for a few months now. We have a PCR test three days before the op date. I am tempted to keep her off school as long as possible before hand but what do you think is reasonable? They've had a few covid cases but not many. Neither she or I want to miss this operation! The school are happy for her to do online learning while she's off.

sorry, the date is 25 Nov if that helps!

Our neighbour has to self isolate for 10 days before his op..

henlee · 01/11/2021 10:23

gosh that's tricky, I'd be tempted to keep her off for the 10 days as long as she's happy and won't be too affected by the time off school

Might be slightly more relaxed about it if she'd already had COVID though!

doginabox · 01/11/2021 10:27

no she doesn't have to self isolate for 10 days, only 3 (assuming a negative PCR).

She wants to self isolate now (because she's got mocks I think!!) but I think that might be too early and a bit weird.

she hasn't had covid afaik.

so I think I might keep her off for 10 days before the PCR test so the 12th

the hospital had no advice to give!

Lots of elective operations are being canceled last minute here so I probably wouldn't do more than the three days incase it was cancelled and process repeated several times.

But I think you may be in different situation as cases are and have been consistently high in schools here and my secondary age kids both been vaccinated already. So maybe less operations cancelled too?

doginabox · 01/11/2021 10:35

no sign of vaccinations for her here which is annoying.

I am hoping as its now a trauma case so on the trauma list it may not be cancelled (it has got a lot worse while she has been waiting and the consultant has upped it to the trauma list)

My son had an operation last week. He had his pre op 3 days before where we both had a COVID test. Then we had to go home & isolate.

bestbefore · 01/11/2021 11:00

You can just book the vaccination yourself now. Don't need to wait for the school

CagneyNYPD1 · 01/11/2021 11:09

I have just come back from a hospital appt with my consultant and discussed this. Yes, 3 days self isolation before the op itself - non negotiable. But they also advised reducing contacts to a bare minimum for 7 days before that. Or self isolate if possible. So you are right to keep her off school if it is an operation that you really don't want to reschedule.

CagneyNYPD1 · 01/11/2021 11:11

Oh yes, don't wait for school. Get online and book one for her ASAP. I managed to get by DS jabbed last Friday as I didn't want to wait until the team goes into his school in December.

thanks, I have sorted this and she's going to have first dse tomorrow!

Is it a complete myth that a vaccination can give a false positive pcr test??

Littleducks · 01/11/2021 11:13

Just don't vaccinate too close to operation date as side effects can make you unwell and then they might cancel it if you have a temp etc

thank you that is really helpful. We absolutely do not want to reschedule as the recovery will be really long and it would be great for her to get movement back fully by the summer

What I want to do - and what she wants to do - is get her vaccinated tomorrow (thats 23 days before op so unlikely to still be unwell) and then keep her at home until the op date!! but that seems excessive.

SinoohXaenaHide · 01/11/2021 11:32

That does sound excessive yes.

What I would do would be to work backwards from the date of the PCR. So you need her to be clear of infection as at 22nd November. I would let her last day attending school on-site be 12th, and all the household minimise all contact outside the house from then till 22nd to reduce the likelihood of any infection. In the unlikely event that she had a covid positive contact before 12th November, the 10 day isolation period would be over by 22nd in any case.

thanks this is what I have now said to her

she's in a complete pickle and is now crying so I have said lets forget it and discuss later!

I'd keep her off the seven days before her 3 day test, so ten days before her op.

If school will let her do online school she's not missing much and her wellbeing will presumably be massively improved by successful surgery?

Good luck to her! Flowers

Firesidefox · 01/11/2021 11:40

i had to self-isolate for 14 days before my op last month

thank you. Yes if the surgery is completely successful it will literally change her life.

definitely not advised to do that!

rrhuth · 01/11/2021 11:52

@doginabox if the surgery will change her life, I would make a deal that she can be off for longer.

This is probably more important than her studies, to her, and she may study better if not worried.

quite. It's going to take 9 months for her to make a full recovery and she will be able to return to the sport that she loves (plus just be able to walk properly). Its not something that can wait much longer plus the risk of further damage is real which is why its been moved to trauma

rrhuth · 01/11/2021 12:07

I think given the seriousness I might let her decide, so long as school let her WFH. She must be like a cat on hot bricks waiting!

I think the school will let her do whatever she decides to do, they've been brilliant and agree it is super important for her to have the surgery asap.
