Covid and asthma

Hi all
I'm recently double vaccinated with the Oxford vaccine. I was wondering if anyone has had covid and already has asthma. I've had asthma since I was two im now 31. It's controlled but I have had allergies daily like dust and pet and my asthma gets set of even by someone spraying air freshener. Im a mum with children at school. My 5 year old son was due an operation in September this year and me and him was asked to do a covid test he came back positive I was negative. There's 7 of us in my house and only he had it. His best friend at school and his whole family had covid. My son had no symptoms it was 10 days of hell trying to keep everything clean. I could not keep my son locked away as he's only 5. Yet no one caught it so I do question if he even had it? I had only had one jab at the time and dad and siblings have not had any. I'm so scared to get covid and die because I'm asthmatic and I wanted to no if anyone had covid and asthma and how was you?

Thank u for reading xx

My 15yo son has asthma. He had Covid last term. He's fine. At the time it affected him - heart racing after any activity, tight chest, feeling wheezy - but that just lasted a few days. It took him about a month to get back to full fitness. None of us caught Covid from him!

You're vaccinated - you should be fine.

hattie500 · 26/10/2021 09:09

@whitehorsesdonotlie thank you for replying. I'm so glad your son was ok if you don't mind me asking ? What asthma meds is he on? X

8 puffs blue and brown inhalers each day.

Signalbox · 26/10/2021 09:11

I’ve not had Covid but from everything I’ve read people with controlled asthma do not have worse outcomes than anyone else. I’ve been careful to keep using my steroid inhalers (normally I can get a bit lazy with them)

slalomsuki · 26/10/2021 09:12

I had Covid and asthma last year at this sort of time. It was like a bad cold/cough and I am convinced my steroid inhaler that I take daily helped minimise the symptoms. Kids who also have asthma also had it and one said it was like flu and was laid up for a week but the other one was pretty much normal yet tested positive.

legosunqueen · 26/10/2021 09:18

My unvaccinated asthmatic DS aged 15 has also just recovered from covid, no chest or breathing related complications, he uses a light brown inhaler twice daily plus takes montelukast. Try not to worry (hard I know) & know that you can seek medical advice if you do get covid & are concerned

RestingPandaFace · 26/10/2021 09:19

I have severe asthma, classed as CEV, and I tested positive after my holiday and was double vaccinated at the time. I was completely asymptotic. I genuinely wouldn’t have known I had anything.

So glad that I was vaccinated before I caught it.

hattie500 · 26/10/2021 09:21

@RestingPandaFace I'm so glad you was ok I'm on Symbicort 2 in the morning 2 at night and salbutamol I wake up needing my blue inhaler in the mornings. X

@slalomsuki if you don't mind me asking what steroid inhaler are you on x

legosunqueen · 26/10/2021 09:25

I'm no medic but if you are needing to use your blue inhaler every morning then it sounds as if you need your meds reviewing to control your asthma more effectively.

hattie500 · 26/10/2021 09:26

@legosunqueen I will get on to my doctors about this thank you x

If you are using your inhaler first thing some things to consider, are there allergens in your bedroom? do you have a cat that’s sneaking on to the bed? are you getting too cold in the night? does your heating come on early enough? could you have reflux in the night (and to confuse mild reflux and asthma symptoms) do you need a long-acting inhaler (something like Fostair with a LABA element)

slalomsuki · 26/10/2021 09:49

@hattie500 I use Symbicort 200. 2 puffs twice a day and more if I have a cold etc. Don't often use my blue inhaler and have had asthma since I was a child

Wagsandclaws · 26/10/2021 09:54

I'm on day 15 of covid now and coming out the other side.

My asthma needed a course of steroids and luckily I didn't get the cough. I take a fairly heavy duty inhaler anyway ( duo resp ) and I needed my blue inhaler too, it's taking it's time to improve even with the extra puffs and the course of Prednisone but I'm grateful to be improving daily.

I have heard of plenty of asthmatics who barely notice that their asthma has taken a dip when they have covid so if you are managing then that's great, talk to your gp or asthma nurse if you are worried though.

trumpisagit · 26/10/2021 10:07

I read earlier in the pandemic that our steroid inhalers appear to protect us a bit against severe covid.
Thankfully I haven't had it yet.
When are you due a booster/ 6 months after 2nd jab?

kimlo · 26/10/2021 10:07

dd1, flutiform (the middle strength) x4 and slabutalmol as needed, doubled flutiform and salbutamol every 4 hours. Was quiet poorly, asthma was effected for a while.

Dd2 qvar x4 salbutamol as needed, was quiet poorly but asthma was fine.

Me, duoresp 4xday and as needed, montelukast, spivira respimart. Didn't catch it from either of them neither, neither did dh, and they had it months apart so didn't catch it from each other.

hattie500 · 26/10/2021 10:10

@Wagsandclaws wow I'm

My best friend and her teenage daughter both had Covid recently and both have daily steroids for asthma. Neither was hospitalised but both suffered more than the ‘mild cold’ that people keep going on about. Both had a cough for nearly a fortnight (as well as flu-like aches) and an exacerbation of asthma symptoms.

hattie500 · 26/10/2021 10:15

@Watsername I'm
Sorry to hear this. How are they now? X

The daughter is fully better, thanks, but my friend is still taking things slowly.

QueenofLouisiana · 26/10/2021 10:29

@hattie500 I’m asthmatic, using fostair inhaler (moved from symbicort about 8 months ago). I tested positive last month. DS is also asthmatic, but needs salbutamol only when unwell or very stressed, he caught Covid from me. He had the 1 jab he’s allowed a month before catching Covid.

I had no chest/ lung issues at the time, but am aware that my chest generally feels tighter than it did pre-Covid. I am only just starting to walk for the amount of time/ distance as I did in the past and I am more tired. However, I am back at work full time and have been since 15 days after positive test.

DS is in a similar position- no issues at the time, but struggling to be back to full activity. Hoping half term will help.

DH had the cough, it lasted about 10 days after isolation finished. He has no underlying conditions. It was irritating and unpleasant but nothing worse.

Very long post, but I hope it’s helpful.

hattie500 · 26/10/2021 10:35

@QueenofLouisiana I'm so glad to hear you
