Covid and asthma

Hi all
I'm recently double vaccinated with the Oxford vaccine. I was wondering if anyone has had covid and already has asthma. I've had asthma since I was two im now 31. It's controlled but I have had allergies daily like dust and pet and my asthma gets set of even by someone spraying air freshener. Im a mum with children at school. My 5 year old son was due an operation in September this year and me and him was asked to do a covid test he came back positive I was negative. There's 7 of us in my house and only he had it. His best friend at school and his whole family had covid. My son had no symptoms it was 10 days of hell trying to keep everything clean. I could not keep my son locked away as he's only 5. Yet no one caught it so I do question if he even had it? I had only had one jab at the time and dad and siblings have not had any. I'm so scared to get covid and die because I'm asthmatic and I wanted to no if anyone had covid and asthma and how was you?

Thank u for reading xx

I'm at asthma sufferer. Last day of isolation today. I've had a slight cough nothing major. Loss of taste and smell were my only other symptoms. Been able to wfh whilst isolating .

BluebellsGreenbells · 26/10/2021 10:39

Also on last day of isolation, no symptoms other than say 8 being snotty.

I work in a school and knew I was a close contact so stayed away from DH and teens prior to testing positive.

My friend has severe asthma and had Covid recently. She was pleased it did not make her asthma worse, she didn't cough any more than she usually does and actually the only symptom she had was tiredness.

Wagsandclaws · 26/10/2021 11:20

@hattie500 I had the temp for about 4 days, felt like I had sore skin to touch and I had pain in my chest when I breathed in at the 'top' of the breath iyswim?

My sons and Dh got the cough but somehow I missed that. A lot of crap on my chest when I did cough though and the pain worried me. Thank goodness it's gone now but I'm expecting my asthma to be a bit tricky for a while yet I think.

I have asthma and was ill for a good 5 or 6 weeks. Needed steroids and antibiotics as very wheezy and chest felt like it was in a vice but saying that, sats were 97-99% all the way through. Chest was affected on and off for a 3 - 4 months afterwards. afterwards
Personally I was the sickest I've ever been but I'm sure anxiety didn't help either.

I was diagnosed with asthma as an adult and had a severe asthma attack about 6mths ago. I have 2 puffs of the brown inhaler each day (when I remember!)

When I recently got Covid. I felt quite ill, but absolutely no respiratory symptoms and no shortness of breath at all. I do wonder if the steroids offer some protection with Covid.

GoingForAWalk · 26/10/2021 12:21

Everyone's asthma is different so no one should be advising anyone else how to control it.

That said loads of people use their inhalers incorrectly and some for decades.

For Salbutamol/blue. Create a seal around the mouth of the inhaler with your lips. Breathe out. Press inhaler as you start to breathe in. Leave lips sealed around inhaler for a few more seconds. Do not remove immediately as most of the medication then goes out into thin air. Repeat and take your second dose.

Each dose should last around 4 hours. Obvs take as and when required.

If you're going to walk to school or work take 2 puffs before you leave to help your airways.

Diagnosed with asthma 3 years ago. Take Fostair 100/6 (4 puffs a day as my usual dose, can take up to 8 a day when ill) and Montelukast.

I caught Covid 3 months ago. Double vaccinated with Pfizer.

My asthma was largely ok with Covid although I did develop a mild secondary chest infection about a week in, it cleared up quickly with a 5 day course of antibiotics which 111 prescribed. I had an awful cough which developed gradually (lasted about 7 weeks but I still have rib pain and palpitations from it and am undergoing tests).

My oxygen saturation was good throughout and my peak flow was better than normal - it's normally 380 but was between 410 and 440 when I had Covid. I was taking extra Fostair due to the cough so this could account for the peak flow improvement!

I was supported by the Covid Monitoring Service (CMS) due to having a number of health conditions. They told me asthmatics were generally faring well with Covid (especially if double jabbed) and it was people with some of my other conditions, like Ehlers Danlos and psoriatic arthritis, who were generally taking longer to recover in their experience.

I ended up having 7 weeks off sick. The cough was awful but I also had a lot of fatigue, aches and pains and brain fog. I also had a kidney infection which took 2 courses of antibiotics to shift. I did have some shortness of breath but nothing dramatic and it didn't last long. I felt very well supported - a doctor from the CMS rang me every day until I was out of the 'danger zone', they took my pulse oximeter, peak flow and blood pressure readings and gave advice on managing symptoms.

My asthma was less affected by Covid in the end than it has been by other viruses. In late 2019 I had an asthma attack from a chest infection and was on 8 Fostair puffs a day, plus about 6 ventolin puffs. Had to have prednisolone alongside antibiotics. At no point with Covid did I struggle to breathe.

I would advise anyone with asthma to get a pulse oximeter if you can, mine was £11 on amazon and reassured me no end.

Can I just ask if anyone’s asthma was affected by the Covid jab? DD due to be jabbed on Saturday and she has just finished a course of prednisolone for an asthma flare up so I’m feeling a bit anxious. Asthma nurse couldn’t really help when I asked her.

hattie500 · 26/10/2021 16:10

@Schulte had mine and asthma was fine xx

Have you had a recent asthma review, or asthma nurse, increased the 3 asthmatic people are in our house doses for the next month and if that doesn't work to go back. He said not only concern covid concerns, bit the rapid change in seasons has affected people alot more this year.

hattie500 · 26/10/2021 16:27

@CatRatSplat hi I have an appointment in the morning tomorrow. My asthma has been terrible lately x

Hi, asthmatic since childhood, on Symbicort (less than you, one puff twice a day) and had covid two weeks ago. I didn't have any respiratory symptoms except a cough, which I get with chest infections regularly anyway. I had other minor symptoms including loss of smell but the fatigue was the worst of it.

hattie500 · 26/10/2021 22:48

@unvillage I'm
So
Pleased that you was ok with covid . How are you now? X

Thank you for asking - I'm well recovered now, it took a bit longer than the 10 days to get back to normal and I had to take a few days more off work, but think I'm there now. Just wanted you to have a positive story :) it's so hard when there's so many scary stories going around, I understand your anxiety completely.

Jenniferturkington · 27/10/2021 17:12

I am currently recovering from covid and have had moderate asthma all my life. My asthma hasn’t been any worse with covid than if I get a common cold. Try not to worry, the vaccine should protect us.
