17 year old daughter turned away for second jab.

My 17 year old daughter had her first jab in August and was invited to have her second jab yesterday. Booked the apt, turned up yesterday and turned away because she’s not 17 and three quarters, told to come back in April 2022. To say we were both gobsmacked is an understatement. Has anyone else experienced this?

For clarity she turned 17 in late July.

Strange. Can you take her to a walk in place?

dementedpixie · 24/10/2021 09:46

They are only getting a 2nd one if their 18th birthday is within 3 months unless they are in a specific group that are eligible for 2 injections

CalamariGames · 24/10/2021 09:47

My dd is also 17 and was going to go for her 2nd jab this half term but was told the same thing.

AlexaShutUp · 24/10/2021 09:47

That's the policy at the moment, isn't it? That 16 and 17 yos only get one jab? I'm hoping that it will change as my 16yo dd would definitely like her second one, but she was told when she got the first jab to ignore the automated reminders about booking a second dose.

It's frustrating, I agree. Covid rates are through the roof and yet we are not vaccinating people who want to be vaccinated.Confused

Its not strange. They aren't offering 2 injections to all under 18s
Monsterpumpkins · 24/10/2021 09:49

My ds is 17. 18 in Jan. Would have had his weeks ago but walk in shut as some thugs have wrecked the roof of the building.
Which is opposite a police station!

Ulrichamelo · 24/10/2021 09:49

I didn’t realise . In our area high rates meant they practically begged the 17 year olds to get double jabbed.

IncessantNameChanger · 24/10/2021 09:53

Are they only offering single jabs to under 28's? Genuine question.

My 17 year old had his on the presumption he would be fully vaccinated. Luckily he was already 4 months off being 18 at his first vaccination but I didnt know this was a thing.

Wouldnt they be better off if just turned 17 and unvaccinated waiting until they are almost 18 to have it all? How will their vaccine passport work? Will she need two doses after turning 18?

IncessantNameChanger · 24/10/2021 09:53

Under 18s I mean

Iamacatslave · 24/10/2021 10:01

@IncessantNameChanger

I really have no idea. Just seems strange to be invited for her second jab then turned away.

I don't know why she was invited. She can have her second at 17 and 9 months unless it changes to offering all 16 and 17 year olds a second before that.

Thethingswedoforlove · 24/10/2021 10:06

Does anyone know if working in a care home should mean that a 16yr old qualifies dor a second jab? It makes no sense to me if they can’t have it but there doesn’t appear to be away of actually getting the second jab. This is entirely to protect the residents- being in a secondary school with sky high rates during the week and in a care home and only single jabbed at the weekend makes no sense to me. Can anyone help?

kimlo · 24/10/2021 10:13

@Thethingswedoforlove Yes she can get a second. If you go to book on the website it'll say she can't book but to click to find out which 16 and 17 year olds are eligable. There it says if she takes proof of enployment to a walk in clinic they will give it to her.

Dd1 could have one that way, but she's very nearly 17+9 and not well at the moment so she's going to wait and book.

Thethingswedoforlove · 24/10/2021 10:16

@kimlo thank you very much

SpindelWhorl · 24/10/2021 10:18

This is really unsatisfactory. Covid is running through the first years again at my local university, the 18 years olds. Just like last year. Many unhappy staff and students.

Lots of blame game going on. (A bit like with the booster.)

SquirrelFan · 24/10/2021 10:26

My 17-year-old had two, one a month after her 17th birthday, the other 8 weeks later. We just turned up to a walk-in place. Think the government is missing a trick by not double jabbing this age.

dementedpixie · 24/10/2021 10:29

Think they are looking at offering a 2nd dose to 16 and 17 year olds as I saw it on another thread

Yes, I saw that too, but I haven't seen any official confirmation of that yet?
Thethingswedoforlove · 24/10/2021 15:19

@kimlo dd1 just had her second dose. Thank you so much for your post as it meant we have been able to get her done! Trying to take care of her residents

AlexaShutUp · 24/10/2021 15:22

@kimlo and @Thethingswedoforlove, thanks. 16yo DD also has a care home job, so we will take a copy of her contract in. Have to wait a couple of weeks though as she is recently post covid. Thankfully wasn't in work to infect any of the residents!!

Thethingswedoforlove · 24/10/2021 15:25

@AlexaShutUp just to let you know they sort of didn’t believe that she was properly Eligible but we had queued for ages and they gave it to her anyway. I guess with the changing guidance it is tricky for all the vaccinators to keep pace with it all. But they were kind and compassionate. It just feels like the right thing to do!

AlexaShutUp · 24/10/2021 15:26

Thanks @Thethingswedoforlove, good to know. I agree that it's the right thing to do - dd is not worried about covid for herself, but she would really hate to pass it on to someone vulnerable.

keepmoving · 24/10/2021 15:27

The rules changed after they started the 16+ roll out.
DCs told to book for 2nd on Oct now told they are not eligible.

My understanding from the outset was that they would only be eligible for one jab. Certainly, this was the case when dd got her first shot in August. When did it change?
