And if so will they do more of the furlough and shutting things down?

Schools?

Please No!

I’m reading that this might be happening.

I do think something will happen with secondary schools and maybe even primary. They can’t go in as they are. I’m currently the only one left standing in my inclusion department at school and I’m not even being able to do my inclusion work as I keep getting drafted in elsewhere. Something needs to change- ideally I would say try masks again at school and staggering break/lunch and no assemblies! Oh and also stop 100s of extra walking through maskless on a tour during the teaching day!

RoseStar · 20/10/2021 07:27

I wish the media wouldn't try and panic is so much

You’re missing this point with this completely. The media knows exactly what is going on, the way the govt has manipulated the media as its mouthpiece (inc over brexit) has been a masterclass in coercion and control. Are you forgetting that the media spent the entirety of the year trying to tell us it’s all over?

I think the media has clocked how bad things actually are or are about to get and have suddenly realised … again… that there’s only one way to avoid another catastrophe. Same pattern as every other lockdown we’ve had

CovidCorvid · 20/10/2021 07:29

I can see us going back to masks and wfh if you can….but not a full lockdown. Knowing Boris it will be too late to be as effective as it could have been and we will be in for a shit winter with a lot of cases and deaths. This coupled with the shit show poor booster program is going to be a massive issue.

RoseStar · 20/10/2021 07:31

@bluetuesdayy Should we all give the OK to staying away from friends and family every winter now? Miss out on half our lives with loved ones

Done right we shouldn’t need to do this, nowhere else is are they? If do end up having to it’s not the fault of the nhs it’s the fault of the govt for pretending they’ve beaten it. All of Europe is able to see friends and family safely without huge case numbers, the only reason it could happen here is the govt not the nhs.

Lovealovestory · 20/10/2021 07:31

I will find it once I've got the kids to school and send link. Chaos here just now

bluetuesdayy · 20/10/2021 07:33

@RoseStar what does Matthew Taylor mean then when he asks for the same mobilisation from the public as wave / lockdown 1 and 2.

RoseStar · 20/10/2021 07:33

Basically Boris’ approach to life is fake it til you make it…

… except in govt he still hasn’t realised that the only thing that translates into is fake it til you break it

Then panic and blame everyone else (judges, GPs, Europe, NHS, lorry drivers etc etc)

www.gov.uk/government/publications/spi-m-o-expert-narratives-for-potential-autumn-and-winter-events-29-july-2020

This might be the "worst case scenario" stuff? From over a year ago though, so wouldn't factor in vaccination etc. (haven't read it)

RoseStar · 20/10/2021 07:38

@bluetuesdayy true if anyone knows what’s happening on the inside it’s him. I think there’s a lot we can do before we get to that point but truth be told we should never have got to where we are now. We’ve been brought to the point where literally no one cares anymore, that’s the difference between us and the rest of the world abs that’s why we are where we are

rrhuth · 20/10/2021 07:39
@RoseStar what does Matthew Taylor mean then when he asks for the same mobilisation from the public as wave / lockdown 1 and 2.
He means people returning to NHS jobs - vacancies are worsening - plus volunteering and organising help in communities e.g. picking up s prescription for a neighbour.

trumpisagit · 20/10/2021 07:42

Schools around here have been meaning to moving to remote learning this week.
Hopefully f2f after half term.

bookworm14 · 20/10/2021 07:43

@Waxonwaxoff0

Also lockdowns should NOT be the default to "save the NHS." Protecting the NHS is not the job of the general public and it's disgusting that it seems to be the only consideration. I do not feel the need to "protect the NHS", that is what the bloody government should be doing with the tax money we pay and if it was spent correctly then we wouldn't be in this mess. If the NHS collapses it is the fault of our PM and co, not the fault of Bob down the road not wearing a mask in Tesco.
All of this. It’s terrifying that so many people now look to lockdown as a default option. It wasn’t a concept that even existed until two years ago, and should be reserved for absolutely dire emergencies. How can anyone believe that legally banning us from seeing our friends and families for months at a time should be a go-to public health tool?
Pinkandpink · 20/10/2021 07:46

No I don’t think there will be another lockdown, I certainly hope not. The only reason it worked the last time as I was furlough from my retail job, so I could home school my kids. I’m not a key worker so wasn’t entitled to a school place. Plus not all of us have the luxury of a comfy wfh job, where if the schools shut can be at home for childcare. If a lockdown did happen, I’m stuffed.

drury7thedition · 20/10/2021 07:48

I don't think so either, I think it will be mandatory mask wearing, reintroduction of social distancing and wfh if you can.

Schools - no idea at all but our schools here have re-introduced masks (couple of weeks ago) in common areas.

EffOrf · 20/10/2021 07:49

Maybe the government should spend less on giving well off people £5k towards their ASHP as they are the only ones that could afford them anyway and spend more on the NHS

Daisydoor12 · 20/10/2021 07:52

Ha now the business secretary has ruled out another lockdown and further restrictions on travel on Sky this morning it’ll happen! Will be yet another u turn 🤣

Seriously though as a country we can’t afford another lockdown, people will be less likely to comply (due to the fact it seems one rule for us and one for them) and the significant damage across so many lives they cause. Yes restrictions may be re-introduced but not on the scale of lockdown. One thing that should be reinstalled is the shut down of a household if there is a positive case in your household-that is the reason why I believe cases are ripping through my school and children’s school.

AnkleDeep · 20/10/2021 07:55

If Johnson doesn't introduce plan B I can see another lockdown due to his negligence.

Kljnmw3459 · 20/10/2021 08:10

No there won't be another lockdown. Nobody can afford it! Including the government.

Tigerblue · 20/10/2021 08:13

Whatever plan B is, I think it's better to nip things in the bud (if it's not too late). We're struggling with teachers being off and getting supplies at our local school. One class only has a third of students in (have covid/covid symptoms), there are no spare supply teachers free, so teacher has moved over, leaving TA to scamble through with smaller class. Not ideal but it keeps both classes in. If another teacher goes off, who knows if they'll be any cover.

QueenofKattegat · 20/10/2021 08:17

What would be the purpose of another lockdown? The first three didn't work, why would a fourth? What is the point of artificially supressing the spread of a virus, by decimating lives, education and the economy, just for it to rise again once those restrictions are lifted. Genuinely, what is the point? Where does it end? We know it isn't going away so what would another lockdown achieve?

We are back, once again, to the general public being made responsible for "saving" the sainted NHS when it isn't our job.

secretllama · 20/10/2021 08:18

I dont see the point in calling for locking down this winter unless you're happy for lockdown every winter. I keep reading that the NHS is worried about flu this season because we locked down/distanced last winter and it didn't spread as usual. So you want us to keep locking down every year because the first winter you don't, it will be carnage with covid and flu and no immunity. I won't be avoiding friends and family this winter.

LyricalBlowToTheJaw · 20/10/2021 08:20

The public have well and truly had enough but I have to hmm at the people who say they won't comply. There won't be much choice if the hairdressers, pubs and shops are closed.
Which reminds me I need to get my roots booked in.
What are you going to do? Kidnap your hairdresser/smash your way into a pub?

Lmao nothing that drastic would be needed for some of us. Round my way, during the last lockdown I had quite an extensive choice of illegally offered hair and beauty treatments from people's homes and there were at least two mini shebeens operating from people's sheds within a mile of my home. One of whom was a friend of the family and therefore I could have gone if I liked. These are just the ones I heard about in passing and didn't seek out.

It's true there'd be nothing to be done about schools. But I think possibly because so much of MN lives in naice areas, there's not much awareness of how things looked for some of us in places where people are rather less likely to want to involve the police for this type of thing. I can assure you that businesses that could continue from private homes often were doing. That's not going to change, especially not with furlough having been withdrawn.

Hesma · 20/10/2021 08:20

I hope so but can’t see it happening

confuseddotcom090 · 20/10/2021 08:20

@Kljnmw3459

They couldn't afford the first one, but that didn't stop them
52andblue · 20/10/2021 08:27

@Bordois

Wow, its been, what, 3 weeks since we last had one of these.

There will be those who insist (yet again) that a lockdown will definitely happen, those that say it won't, some dodgy stats, a bit of fear mongering, someone who knows someone who knows someone who is high up in the NHS / government who has been told to prepare for lockdown, a bit of name calling, some ripping the piss and then the thread will drop off the front page.

Excellent summation @bordois

Depends what / if new strains emerge & whether NHS overwhelmed.
It'll be a bumpy winter re NHS (on its knees / Flu') but no one knows yet
