People who were vaccinated early but not eligible for booster

Facespook · 18/10/2021 20:31

We were lucky enough to get the vaccine early through work (SEN school) and I was double jabbed by April whereas if I’d waited for my age group it would have been August.

But now boosters are only being offered to frontline care staff so we won’t get one.

Assuming vaccine immunity lasts around 6 months that leaves us a lot less protected than the rest of the population over winter.

I’m not overly bothered as I’m not vulnerable but would like the same level of protection as people my age, especially as the reason for getting the vaccine early in the first place (working with vulnerable children) still applies.

I wondered this. I had an early vaccination due to shielding but i spoke to my gp and we decided I was one category lower in reality so i got moved boxes.(i lost weight) But now i am wondering if i will get a booster or not.

Pleasenomoreglitter · 19/10/2021 07:50

I just tried to book as if I'm not a health or social care worker and it says not eligible, I'm presuming because I'm under 50. If I try saying I am, it lists all the eligible employment or Carer criteria, which I don't strictly fall under as a Sen ta. It says you must take proof of employment to show. Given the criteria, I'm pretty sure they won't vaccinate me with a school ID badge and a mainstream one at that. It's really frustrating as the child I work with is particularly vulnerable to respiratory infections and even a mild cold can land them in hospital.

sartorius · 19/10/2021 07:59

I'm not sure they are going to give boosters to younger age groups though? Apart from frontline medical due to higher risk of catching covid.

Isn't it a case that immunity is waning in the older generations as immune systems not as good but it should last better in younger people?
I'm sure I heard a scientist on tv saying this. So under 50s may need annual booster

HSHorror · 19/10/2021 08:06

Well imo az so over 40 should also have been eligible.
Also asthmatics have been screwed again as initially were included in booster as flu jabbed but then it was just same as before steroids or hospitalised. Then its now i think recently hospitalised

greenlynx · 19/10/2021 08:13

@FromTheAshes
Are you sure ? I’ve thought that unpaid careers are still included.

FourFourthsDontCare · 19/10/2021 08:17

My elderly mother had her vaccines early as part of the Oxford trial. Despite it being over a year since her second dose, she hasn’t yet been called for her booster and her GP surgery is refusing to expedite it. I’ve also been unable to book online for her. I am Not Happy.

Pleasenomoreglitter · 19/10/2021 08:22

@sartorius it's for social care workers too, who are at risk of passing it on to the vulnerable people they work with.

I'm special school staff and the LA here decided last week that we count as front line workers again and Ive got my booster today, exactly 6 calendar months from my 2nd dose.

FromTheAshes · 19/10/2021 08:46

@greenlynx we're not in the list so we don't get in 🤣 you never know, maybe I'll get an invite in November but I'm not holding my breath. It seems its only for those in professional caring roles according to the NHS booster page www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/coronavirus-vaccination/coronavirus-booster-vaccine/

DuvetDayIsEveryDay · 19/10/2021 08:51

I'm eligible for the booster, but its Pfizer which I'm not allowed due to allergies.

Can't find anyone to talk to about this. It's very frustrating! I'm CEV as well as working in Social care.

Oblomov21 · 19/10/2021 09:20

No glitter, late 40's.

ILookAtTheFloor · 19/10/2021 09:28

I'm sitting in the vaccination centre for my 15 mins post-jab wait, literally no one checked whether I was a social care worker, OP you could just go for it, book it as a social care worker! Take your school ID just in case, no one asked me!

I honestly think everyone will be offered the booster eventually and as you rightly say, you'll be out of sync with the 6 month gap.

Or if you're CEV. I have a third vaccine booked then likely to have a booster after that
herecomesthsun · 19/10/2021 10:17
@Oblomov21 are you over 50? That would let you as soon as you're at 6 months.
Even if you are CEV and over 50, this isn't working.

endofagain · 19/10/2021 10:19

I am due my booster but there are no appointments available.

greenlynx · 19/10/2021 11:35

@FromTheAshes
My DD is over 16 and in high risk group, I’m her main carer. I do receive CA but I don’t think it matters in this situation. I was told that I would be eligible for booster, it’s just not 6 months yet. A few friends who were jabbed earlier then me got the text inviting to book already.
I would check with someone like National Autistic society or similar (depending who you care for) about you.

Beakerandbungle · 19/10/2021 11:44

@FromTheAshes

Unpaid carers who were vaccinated as part of group 6 do get a booster - they come under the over 16 main carer category. It’s also confirmed here:

carers.org/guidance-on-coronavirus/coronavirus-vaccine-faqs-for-unpaid-carers

FromTheAshes · 19/10/2021 11:52

Thanks both, I totally glossed over that and jumped straight to 'over 16 and live with...' (I don't live with the person I care for). I will await my call then 😁

WithASpider · 19/10/2021 11:55

I'm 41 and an unpaid carer and Support Worker. 2nd vaccine 31st March, called for booster 29th Sept. Suspect it varies by area. I wasn't even asked for proof. DH has booked his booster too - Under 50 not CEV.

Didn't have a reminder for my Flu jab this year though!

bumblenbean · 19/10/2021 12:18

I’m a bit worried about this. I was randomly put on shielding list and given first jab in February but they then reviewed and said it was probably a mistake Hmm and took me off the list. Second jab in May.

So am now not eligible for a booster and second jab was almost 6 months ago. Hopefully not CV but still not ideal to go into winter with waning immunity. Im hoping there’s still significant protection from hospitalisation / death anyway

backformoreagain · 19/10/2021 12:24

It is daft. Everyone over 6 months post-2nd dose should be getting a booster. The UK has a massive surplus/stockpile so it isn't due to shortage. One limiting factor is the winding down of the vaccination sites - my local one now only opens 1 or 2 sessions a week. Not enough for all the boosters and soon all the 12-15 year olds.
PP mentioned Israel requiring boosters for everyone over 12 year old at 5 months post-2nd dose (to be given before 6 months or else vaccine passport lapses). Even the US is giving boosters to everyone over 18. UK government's ambivalence to vaccination is undermining the early success.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 19/10/2021 12:30

I'm 43 and was double jabbed by April as I'd had cancer and chemo and radiotherapy.

Now I don't think I will get the booster as its been long enough that my immune system etc will be back to full strength.

winterisaroundthecorner · 19/10/2021 12:40

My dc is cv not cev, never qualified for early vaccination, waiting to be vaccinated as normal teenager. At least you have some immunity, better than none, like a lot of children.

3asAbird · 20/10/2021 05:42

The criteria for boosters should surely be the same as original rollout as if you qualified then you should qualify now as been longer than 6months.

Same goes for those who kindly took part in trials.

BizzyMissy · 20/10/2021 06:53

My dad is 76 and had his second vaccination mid April and has not been invited for his booster. When he tried to book online he wasn’t able to as he was “not eligible”. His GP won’t take calls about vaccinations. Hoping his area is just a little bit behind (Nottinghamshire) and he gets to book very soon. Trying to find a walk in centre for him but nothing showing up on the local NHS trust website.
