Take up of vaccine in 12-15 yo is as low as 10%

Guardian story on the low take-up of vaccines in teens.

I had wondered if this issue would arise. All the (normally intelligent) teens I know are really anti-vax. Strong belief it renders you infertile. I guess a lot of this must be social media influencing.

Hardly anyone showed up for the vax clinic at dc school. In the end they made all the teens talk to the nurse but the take up was almost zero. This must be happening elsewhere too. Any other experiences? It’s really worrying and I don’t know how it will be addressed. I also wonder how it will impact families wanting to travel abroad next year.

Have just gone on the system for my kids, I could book but it won't give me any of the local vaccine centres.

@Piapiano

Why the fertility concerns? Has any vaccine ever been associated with a negative impact on fertility?
I've often wondered this.

I didn't think a vaccine could cause infertility if the virus itself didn't carry these risks?

I though measles was the same?

“You can also twist their original comment as much as you want, they clearly said the benefits do not outweigh the risks as children in general are less effected by covid.”

They didn’t say that though. I’ve attached a screenshot from their report where they say “Overall, the committee is of the opinion that the benefits from vaccination are marginally greater than the potential known harms”.

The part that may be confusing you is where they go on to say that while myocarditis after the vaccine appears to get better quickly and with minimal treatment, they’re not sure if it would leave long term problems. Fair enough, you might think. But they haven’t considered the risk of myocarditis after covid, which is higher than the risk of myocarditis after the vaccine. My ds unfortunately had this after covid, and still has heart problems caused by covid he caught back in March 2020. To me, it’s very bloody obvious that covid can cause long term damage, there are plenty of reports documenting that. The risk from the vaccine is much lower, in my opinion, than the risk from covid. Which is easy for me to say as the evidence lives in my house Smile[/quote]
Sorry to hear about your ds.

A 15yo near me dies of myocarditis from covid a few weeks ago the day they were due to have their vaccine.

They had no underlying conditions.

My DS's school had the vaccinators in this week. I consented for him but they ran out of jabs before he got his. So he was taken for it today. The centre was packed and loads of parents were complaining about the same thing. Why are they not taking enough vaccines when they have the consents already so know numbers?

antsinyourpanta · 23/10/2021 20:50

AFAIK take up was fairly high at my DC school. They had it first week of October.

MsFogi · 23/10/2021 23:39

Every single school in our area ran out of vaccines before vaccinating all the children whose parents had consented

wolfstarling · 23/10/2021 23:41

I would imagine a lot of that age range are in the throes of Covid so are unable to take up the vaccine yet!

tigger1001 · 24/10/2021 09:19

@Iwantthesummersun

I found ours by hunting through the nhs Lothian vaccine site *@tigger1001* but yes I agree, it’s poor. There was only the airport or two sites in North Edinburgh. Nothing at all elsewhere in the south or in Midlothian. They also can’t use the vaccine buses currently but they could at the start.
I've been checking the nhs vaccination site, and it said they were running drop in's Tuesday to Sunday in the holidays. So thought great we can go this Sunday (today) went and checked the times and it stopped on Friday... suspect we will need to go to another nhs area but the queue times are being reported as 2 hours plus. Would rather just make an appointment and know when to turn up.

@Wakemeuuuup

My son should be getting his soon. No idea how many of his year are/ aren't having it.

I'm more worried because the anti-vac crowd (including Piers Corbyn) were demonstrating outside a local school last week, shouting at the poor kids trying to just get to school. I hope they don't show up at my kids' school

In wonder if they can be classed as a political group? Then the police can move them on.
