Sorry this isn’t really Covid related, but I’m now suffering with my 5th cold this year. Confused

I have a toddler in nursery (he’s 19 months) and since he started he seems to pass most things he catches, to me!

I never used to suffer with colds, maybe one every few years! Now it’s one every few months.

We’re going on a uk holiday next week and I could really do without being full of cold.

Does anyone have a recommendation of a good multivitamin (or any other vitamins) I could take?

The best vitamin is one you can stomach and will take. I like the gummy variety, multivits.

Honestly, most vitamins do very little unless you are actually deficient in them.

It's recommended to take Vitamin D in the Autumn/Winter as people often do have low levels, so could be worth getting a good quality one.

As well as a high dose Vitamin D, Vitamin C & Zinc are good to take when you have a cold or sickening for one.

On top of this, fresh air, rest, reducing stress, regular exercise, reducing alcohol intake & eating healthily will also help to improve your immune system.

HesterShaw1 · 07/10/2021 16:38

And proper sleep!

Easier said than done, I know

SmileySandwich · 07/10/2021 16:42

Similar position. Taking vit D and C when snuffly.

Hairwizard · 07/10/2021 18:17

Vit d c and zinc.
NAC aswell. Double the dose as soon as you feel a cold coming on.

Vit c can be taken higher dose to reduce the time you are ill too.
A good quality multi vit and mineral to cover all bases.

Definitely all those.

Good hygiene and ventilation can help some too.

I am never ill and swear by daily vitamin c, zinc, vitamin d all year round and a multi vitamin. Also take a probiotic shot each morning and drink juiced orange, turmeric and Manuka honey mixed with hot water each morning. My family are very into supplements etc and we never seem to have colds or the usual illnesses that go around in winter.

Does your multivitamin contain vitamin C, D & Zinc or do you take those in addition?

What dose of zinc would you recommend?

singlemama91 · 08/10/2021 08:19

I would really recommend Vitl! Its a vitamin subscription and you answer lots of questions about your health and needs and they create a table that has all the vitamins you need.

It really made a difference to me. Especially with two young DCs with my tiredness and everything. I can get you a free trial if you are interested x

ByeByeMissAmericanPie · 08/10/2021 08:28

Buy the best multi vitamin supplement you can afford… the cheaper versions use cheaper forms of the vitamin, which is often harder for your body to absorb.

I started talking Vit D a few years ago when the clocks change in the autumn, and so far, I’ve beaten off most lurgys. (I am touching wood at this point!)

PingusLittleSister · 08/10/2021 11:21

I take 1000iu of vitamin d each day (vitabiotics) from late September to March and have done for the last 6 years.
Touch wood this seems to work for me. Only 'cold' I've had in all that time was a dead ringer for covid in spring 2020.
I sometimes take a probiotic too.

MrsSkylerWhite · 08/10/2021 11:22

Echinacea seems to help in our family. Anecdotal of course, but worth a try.

DayKay · 08/10/2021 11:26

Vitamin d and eat lots of fresh fruit and veg.
Vitamin c is important for the immune system but it’s best from natural sources.
Foods like ginger and turmeric are good too so try to include them in your diet either in meals or in a hot drink.
A good drink would be half a lemon, some turmeric, ginger, small amount of black pepper (it works with the turmeric) add some good honey to make it a bit more palatable.

GemmaRuby · 08/10/2021 11:28

Multivitamins are not ideal because your body can’t absorb most of them, so they just make your kidneys work harder and come out in your wee.

I take vit D with my breakfast, and then later in the day I take Floradix (iron, vit a, b and c).

Iron absorption is helped by vit C and hindered by dairy and caffeine.

inferiorCatSlave · 08/10/2021 11:34

This time of year Vitamin D - possibly zinc and possibly Magnesium which can help with Vitamin D absorption.

If you take a high dose of vit d possibly vitamin K as well.

But a vitmain D suppliment and a good diet might be all that's needed.

Katie517 · 08/10/2021 11:40

@Dandy008 the multivitamin contains it as well so basically like a double dose 🙂

Guacamole001 · 08/10/2021 14:29

I am like Katie and take vitamins and I also juice daily. I just had my first cold in two years which lasted just three days!

Jellypot · 08/10/2021 15:39

I'm another one for supplements. I eat well but some times there is too much pressure on my back to cook a meal as an example. I don't like a big dinner in the evening. I prefer a waffle or a yogurt. I aim to have a hood breakfast with eggs and vegetables and cheese and aim to have a good lunch. I do think I would benefit from taking vitamins and supplements.

I started taking vitamins and supplements a few years ago. About 3 years ago. My main aim and focus was on bone health and general health so vitamin C, Vitamin D, calcium, K2, magnesium.

I definitely noticed a difference since taking supplements. I remember the winter of 2019 colds went around work and home and my partner who I sleep with and I never got a cold. So there's something in it. My work cam be very demanding and stressful and intense I should be run down and also I live with my aging mother who doesn't even contain any of her germs. She was ill in the spring of 2020 with a cold and she sat in the kitchen coughing into the open. I never got sick. I was expecting to come down with a cold but that never happened.

When there is a cold in the house and when I feel the start of a cold I continue with the supplements and I add in a garlic supplement and honey. I would prefer fresh garlic but my mother hates the smell of it.

Jellypot · 08/10/2021 15:41

I spend a small fortune on supplements every month 😥 but I do think it helps me so much - energy levels have increased so much, mood is good, colds are few and far between.

Innovationstandard · 08/10/2021 15:46

Jellypot

Can I ask what you take?

Guacamole001 · 08/10/2021 16:03

I think Solgar digestive enzymes help my mood as well as stomach. I also take Vitabiotics Feroglobin. B100 timed release Holl n Barrett. Also calcium and magnesium Holl n Barrett. Solgar D3 4000 iu. Menopause Support by Vogel. The calcium I take evenings separately from the Feroglobin as iron may not be taken alongside calcium. Washed down mornings with half a fizzy tablet vit c with zinc. I only use half as vit c can make us tired. I dont eat much meat so prefer iron top up in the Vitabiotics but appreciate I may be doubling up a bit.

Guacamole001 · 08/10/2021 16:03

Forgot to mention acidophilus.
