School vaccines cancelled

TenFlix · 06/10/2021 22:06

Our school was supposed to administer in two weeks but we've been informed that the NHS is rung behind with the vaccine programme.

Anyone else in ether same boat? Had any schools completed theirs?

DD1’s school cancelled today’s planned flu vaccinations, Covid due 20th, but she’s currently off with Covid,

idiotfacelicker · 08/10/2021 10:07

@ittakes2

We were just told yesterday the yr10s and year 11s cancelled yr8s and yr 9s going ahead. The year 10s and yr 11s are doing GCSEs and I thought the whole point was to help children avoid missing out at school so really surprised with this decision.

That's nuts and would make me a bit cross. What on Earth could be thinking behind that decision?!

delilahbucket · 08/10/2021 10:38

Not even heard about it here, not even been asked for permission. They are currently doing the flu immunisation programme which DS has yesterday.

jackstini · 08/10/2021 10:47

Ours were done 28/29 Sept
They had planned only 1 day but it took 2
Dd tested positive 6 days later!

Getawaywithit · 08/10/2021 12:13

I have a vulnerable 12 year old who has not been done yet. Children in the school I work at have been vaccinated this week. I have now involved my MP to get a resolution.

Howunusualisthis · 08/10/2021 12:16

Still waiting to hear anything from my dcs' school. Filled in forms 3 weeks ago.

MrsSkylerWhite · 08/10/2021 12:18

Can you go to a local walk in instead? Most are pretty flexible.

ApplesAreTheBaneOfMyLife · 08/10/2021 13:06

Ours got cancelled the evening before it was scheduled to take place. That was about a month ago and we’ve heard nothing since.

Flu jabs scheduled at school for November.

Crackingowlsanctuary · 08/10/2021 13:18

Ours was Monday just gone although the school emailed on the day to say that it looked like only 400 students would actually get it (out of around 1600). My boys were lucky that they both managed to get it that day. Haven’t heard when the rest will be offered it yet.

Howunusualisthis · 08/10/2021 13:32

@MrsSkylerWhite Other NHS centres not taking 12-15 yr olds, I don't think. Can't book on the website anyway.

MrsLCSofLichfield · 08/10/2021 23:14

Nothing. No consent forms. No information. Fuck all.

Frazzled2207 · 09/10/2021 11:38

@Silkieschickens

Ours was cancelled for whole school but DD also caught covid before it so wouldn't have been eligible. New date has appeared but now refusing to accept her as she will be 16 then.
she should be able to book in the local vaccine centre if 16. For some reason not properly explained they can't in England if under 16 (something to do with consent). but can in Scotland and Wales!
WombatChocolate · 09/10/2021 16:45

In our school, they are due next week. Has been mentioned that older students will be prioritised if there isn’t enough for all. We will see what happens.

ohdeariforgot · 09/10/2021 16:51

Our school hasn't even been given a date for them to start. Apparently they are focussing teen vaccines in areas where adult uptake has been lower.

hippychick10 · 09/10/2021 16:52

I'm involved in this this and we are racing through the schools in the counties I'm working in. The programme is going on through into November and we have finished some schools.
There are some huge schools and it can take all day to get through a few hundred children. The vaccination teams ha e to cover 100s of school so please be patient!

We are utilising school nurses, school immunisation teams and anyone who has first aid qualifications in all the schools. Don't forget though anyone who comes in and works in a school has to be DBS cleared and there simply isn't time to get parent helpers in as we've had such a short time to get this rolled out.

gamerchick · 09/10/2021 16:54

2 year groups didn't get done at kids school. There are no plans to come back and finish apparently.

hippychick10 · 09/10/2021 16:55

It would be nigh on impossible to vaccinate 1600 in one day! That would need about 30 vaccinators and admin staff plus first aiders to observe the kids afterwards. Simply not possible. 400 is still some target....
shouldistop · 09/10/2021 16:57

@hippychick10 people who only have a first aid qualification are administering vaccinations? Surely that's not right? I am a trained first aider and we didn't cover vaccinations at all.

Whyarewehardofthinking · 09/10/2021 16:57

We were given a date that fell in the middle of half term, still waiting for a new one. 2 friends in other areas have told me that they are having to run extra days as it is taking longer than planned, mainly due to the nursing teams having staffing problems.

HomeCountiesMum · 09/10/2021 16:59

No! First aiders look after the children afterwards.
Qualified vaccinators give the jabs!

shouldistop · 09/10/2021 17:00

@HomeCountiesMum that makes sense!

AllMonthLong · 09/10/2021 17:00

Vaccinations went well at the school where I work. All kids done in one day, but sign up was low. 400 out of 1200 kids.

My DC’s school have planned them for this week, so we’ll see how that pans out.

OrangeBananaFish · 09/10/2021 17:15

Not heard anything about it here. Though have given permission for the flu jab and the one for the cervical cancer that girls in DD's year get.

Hamjamwich · 09/10/2021 18:07

Update. Ds had his jab on Thursday. There was a mop is session for the ones that they didn't have time to vaccinate last week. He felt a bit feverish, achey but has been able to continue all his activities

BlanketPiggy · 09/10/2021 19:01

@hippychick10 thanks for doing your bit. It's frustrating it wasn't able to be done over the holidays, they'd have had more volunteers available. Anyway, good work.
