Catching covid from household members

AlexaShutUp · 05/10/2021 13:34

DD (16) did several positive lateral flow tests on Sunday evening. Developed symptoms on Monday, currently waiting for a pcr. I fully expect it to come back positive as she has been in close contact with other confirmed cases. She had one jab back in August.

DH and I are both fully jabbed but we'll aware that we may contract the virus anyway. Neither of us have symptoms so far, we are also awaiting pcr results and isolating in the interim. I have done several lateral flow tests, all negative so far.

Just wondering if we are going to get it or not. 🤔 I know that nobody can tell me this, but if you caught covid from a household member, please could you tell me how long it took before you started to show symptoms/test positive? And if your household members had covid but didn't pass it on, could you tell me how strictly you isolated from them?

We cannot really isolate within the house as we only have one bathroom. And in any case, I am not going to hold back from giving dd a hug when she is clearly feeling rubbish. We are trying to be careful but not OTT iyswim. Just wondered what others' experiences have been of covid cases in the household, and when (if at allGrin) I should expect to get sick?!

We're in just this position. DS (14) was jabbed last Monday, sent home from school as a close contact on Thursday and tested positive that evening (lateral flow, confirmed by PCR next day). He's been in his bedroom ever since.

DH then tested positive on Saturday night and has been in the spare room since. I've been wearing an N95 mask whenever I go into their rooms and have testing negative (inc PCR) until this morning, when I had a positive lateral flow. Not bothering with PCR - it's clear what it is! No symptoms for me yet.

Now we all have it, I don't see the point in each of us isolating within the house, though DS seems extremely happy to stay in his room with room service...

Grin at the enjoyment of room service!

Interesting to hear your timelines. Hope you manage to stay symptom-free!

My dniece started with symptoms Sunday evening, dsis took her, other dd and dh to be tested yesterday, they are all positive. Dsis just has some cold symptom’s like her dd, her dh and other dd have no symptoms at all. Oh and all the lft tests they took on Sunday were negative.

AlexaShutUp · 05/10/2021 13:56

Thanks @Phillipa12. Interesting that they got positive pcrs despite the negative lateral flows. I have been fully expecting my pcr to come back negative because I have done several negative lateral flows, but maybe it will be positive after all!

I have no symptoms, except for a slightly runny nose. However, I'm not convinced that this isn't just the result of all the bloody testing that I have been doing!!

DH has had it twice, both time confirmed with a PCR and he had symptoms both times. We didn’t confine him to one room, just carried on as we would if someone had a cold, but none of us caught it from him either time. DD caught it a few months later from a school contact and again, no one else in the house caught it. I was sat with DD quite a bit too as she was feeling rubbish and she even had a sleep in our bed as we had the better tv in our room.

So you might be lucky and not catch it from them. Hope they are doing ok and recover quickly.

Watching with interest... DS7 tested positive last Thursday, DD10, DH and I all negative on last PCR and daily Lfts, but surely we can't all avoid it? We are not distancing in the house as he is only little. I am triple jabbed and S
DH is double jabbed. I hate the waiting game though...

Lotsofpots · 05/10/2021 14:02

I had covid earlier in the summer. Slept separately from DH but other than that didn't isolate at all - both kids are young so couldn't stop them from cuddling etc. I did bedtimes in their bed etc. They were all negative, testing throughout.

dottyaboutstripes · 05/10/2021 14:04

Ds12 has just had Covid and none of us caught it so it's certainly not inevitable that you'll test positive

Gizmo98765 · 05/10/2021 14:06

In this position with 17 year old DC at moment. Good luck. I was on the downstairs list so we have been very careful. We also have a shared bathroom and a separate downstairs toilet. They have isolated in their bedroom and we have taken meals snacks and food etc up. I have permanently cracked the bathroom window open to offer some ventilation. We are all wearing masks in the upstairs landing, wiping surfaces down with anti-bac, using separate towels and trying to wait 20 minutes after ill DC has used bathroom and regularly communicating via facetime and phone. Fortunately they have not been too ill. We are currently on day 6 of isolation (the rest of us had a PCR the day DC got results and have done regular LFT and fingers crossed so far the rest of us are all negative 🤞). Good luck OP.

AlexaShutUp · 05/10/2021 14:07

Thank you @567and. It's interesting to know that you didn't get it despite carrying on pretty much as usual. Hope we are as lucky!Grin

We all got it, family of four, double vaccinated adults, and I had it before. I just don't think you can predict how it is going to go. None of us were particularly unwell.

Yes @little0miss0mac my DC is also quite enjoying room service a little too much too.

AlexaShutUp · 05/10/2021 14:09

Great to hear the positive stories @Lotsofpots and @dottyaboutstripes!Smile

@Gizmo98765, good luck to you too! Sounds like you are taking great precautions!

@idontlikealdi, glad to hear that none of you were seriously ill with it. Hope that will be the same for us if we do come down with it.

My DD had Covid - on jab, mild symptoms, positive LF, followed by positive PCR.

None of the rest of us caught it (DH & I double jabbed, other DDs single-jabbed, under 18 not jabbed).

She tested negative on LF a week later.

She pretty much stayed in her room, and came down to the kitchen when it was empty. She cleaned the bathroom with Clinell wipes after each use.

Stuckandinamess · 05/10/2021 14:15

Both of my teens had Covid and neither myself nor husband had it (both double vaccinated). One bathroom in the house and they were both in their rooms initially as felt sleepy a lot. Up until test though we had obviously been mingling like a normal house.
Also was staying with a relative who had a positive test while I was there and again, I haven't caught it and up until then we had been hugging and spent lots of time in the same room and in the car.
Fingers crossed for you.

GuybrushT · 05/10/2021 14:25

9 year old DS tested positive on PCR last Thursday. He has not been confined to his room but hasn't passed it onto his sister or to DH and I who are both double jabbed (so far anyway!) A significant number of children in his year at school have it, but there is only one family where it has been passed onto a sibling. In all other cases, it has not spread to the rest of the household from the child who has tested positive.

tigger1001 · 05/10/2021 14:30

Eldest tested positive. The rest of us were negative and didn't develop symptoms. I did another pcr on his last day of isolation and was negative.

Didn't isolate him in the house. He shares a room with his younger brother so fairly pointless to isolate him anyway.

jennyt82 · 05/10/2021 14:31

My teenage son and husband have both had covid (months apart) both stayed in their bedrooms and nobody else in the house caught it. We did use separate bathrooms though so not sure if that's the reason why

housewifeathome · 05/10/2021 14:38

DC2 had it a few months ago. Suspect DC1 had it but couldn't test as she went mental when swab went anywhere near her.

Neither myself (unvaccinated) nor DH (vaccinated) caught it.

Bobbleka · 05/10/2021 14:40

Son tested positive Thursday and I did on Sunday. I didn’t isolate him in his bedroom as would have been hard with his mental health problems and SEN, and I’m double jabbed.

AlexaShutUp · 05/10/2021 15:18

Thanks for all of your responses. There doesn't seem to be any real pattern or logic as to who gets it or when they get it. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens!!Confused

We're in this position. I have it - got symptoms last week, positive LF and PCR confirmed it. DH and DDs (8 and 4) are all negative still. No distancing as currently our bedroom is the front room and DH has had to stay home isolating from work. Can't believe they haven't caught it but DH has done LF every day and 2 PCRs and DDs have done some too. Dh and I are both double vaxxed.
