Why aren’t the 3 main symptoms being updated?

Dd has a really anxious week in school last week because lots of kids in her class are going in unwell but untested as they don’t have one of the 3 main symptoms. Either that or they’re using lateral flows which are inaccurate when symptomatic.

As a precaution and to ease her worries I’ve been doing frequent lateral flows on her (she has no symptoms) and she tested positive on Monday which has been confirmed via PCR. She’s completely asymptomatic so glad I did it but absolutely gutted that she has to miss 10 days off school.

Why aren’t the government updating these outdated symptoms? The Zoe website has probably the most accurate information but not everyone refers to it. I understand that testing when it could just be a cold is a pain but I’d much rather do that personally, than have it spread to so many other kids as it has in my daughters year.

I just don't get the herd immunity strategy. I'm double vaccinated and caught Covid straight away off DS.

Many on here reporting Covid caught twice etc. so why do people think it exists when you can keep catching Covid?

SonnetForSpring · 29/09/2021 16:43

There is no herd immunity. But by letting people catch it now, those people are unlikely to catch it again this winter unless another variant arises. So by the time we hit the peak of respiratory viruses in winter, there will be less people susceptible to catching it. That the theory. Whether it works, we will have to see.

I quite agree with an ever changing virus herd immunity isn’t possible but the research suggests the best position for someone to be within 6 months of a double vaccination and then catch covid.

The government doesn’t actually believe in facts or science.

I really hope that is true Fallagain, and I will get half a years proper protection now. My DD caught it at school, no symptoms beyond a headache which did not prompt a PCR test (her lfts remained negative throughout). Then I got it, the whole shebang, it's rubbish, ten days in and I am only now feeling a bit better. And I am double vaxxed. My other (adult) daughter also now has it and feels crap too. It feels like a deliberate policy to just let it spread amongst people who are not getting, medically speaking, that unwell. However the school is now at breaking point - half the staff are off, because for many people they are still much to sick too work (I certainly am).

Op I totally agree. And yes it's sore throat, headache, chills, nausea and maybe, a cough but not really...

DeclineandFall · 29/09/2021 17:35

From the first outbreak in 2020 lots of people had it with just cold like symptoms. Makes sense- a spectrum somewhere between asymptomatic and death. I have seen some doctors/scientists that have been banging on relentlessly for months about changing the list of symptoms because a lot of people spreading it had these mild symptoms. Government just wasn't interested. It wanted to keep official numbers low as possible I think.

I'm on day 10 today and finally rid myself of Test & Trace later.

In my final conversation today they asked how I was feeling? I said I was very tired, lethargic/no energy. They said as long as I wasn't experiencing a high temp/vomitting or diaorrhea then I could go about my usual activities.

So why aren't D&V on the official list then? Nuts!

“Immunity” in this case doesn’t mean “can’t catch it” like it does with some viruses. It means “you’ll have antibodies, so it won’t be so bad if you do catch it”.

Because we officially don't give one anymore, or should I say Boris doesn't... made me laugh when they showed all the German election footage, every fooker was wearing a mask, everyone, makes us look like numb nuts

WhatHappenedToTheLego · 29/09/2021 18:59

Perhaps if lots of people have been requesting PCRs without any of the "3 symptoms" but still saying they HAVE got those symptoms in order to get the PCR, then when the statistics of why people request pcrs are analysed, it makes it look like those three symptoms are still pretty relevant?

YourKidsIf · 29/09/2021 19:16

I’m annoyed with how many people aren’t testing because “they know it’s a cold”. Even when they have been in close contact with a case.

I can understand why they don’t want to change the 3 official symptoms but I think there needs to be more education about how it presents itself at the start. Everyone I know started with a headache and runny nose. The cough and loss of taste only came later.
