If you have had period changes after being vaccinated will you be having the booster?

I had my first vaccine in Feb . Second in April (Pfizer) and had almost constant bleeding after the second vaccination.

I’m a front line worker so have been called to have a booster vaccination but I really don’t want it . Well I think I don’t .

I am worried about the changes it made to my menstrual cycle and the long term implications of this , which are unknown because there is not any research into it . I’m 36 and I am planning on having another baby soon and I am concerned about the impact on my fertility because of the side effects I have experienced.

I have had a smear and ultrasound investigation as well as bloods etc done which are all apparently normal so my GP doesn’t know what else could have caused my symptoms really.

Sorry for the waffle but if you have had period changes post vaccine will you be having the booster?

I think I would feel more comfortable waiting for more research to be done on why it causes these issues but I also obviously want to be protected from covid so I’m just so unsure of what to do!

@Babyiwantabump has your cycles returned back to normal since your second jab in April?

Babyiwantabump · 28/09/2021 09:43

Not yet . That’s why I’m so worried I think . Because of the nearly 6 months of a side effect that no one knows why it happens , or the implication of it .

My vaccinations (AZ) were Feb and May. No underlying health problems, I'm a carer. About three weeks after my first vax I developed unusual bruising and then my periods went crazy. I've had a five day period every 28 days since I was twelve and since the jab I've had 15 day bleeding for six months. Like you I've had blood tests and ultrasounds but nothing found. I'm now on iron pills because I'm becoming anaemic from all the blood loss. My periods are finally starting to return to normal and I'm really scared that the booster will mess that up! Sorry, that's no help at all but I just wanted to let you know that there are others in the same situation.

MercyBooth · 28/09/2021 15:26

On the other side of this what about women who are waiting to go on hormonal contraception who have a start it on the first day of their period. A period that now wont show after the vaccine.

Quornflakegirl · 28/09/2021 15:30

Had mine is April and June (AZ) and my periods are still the same.

IAmTheLovechildOfYvesAndIsabel · 28/09/2021 15:52

Firstly I just want to say that I was all for getting my vaccines and still plan to have a booster.

Before having my first vaccine (Pfizer) my once heavy periods had become much lighter and shorter and I put it down to the fact I am severely anaemic.

By the time I came home from getting the jab, my period had started and was shockingly heavy and 9 days early.
Since then they've been all over the place, PMT off the charts.

My other existing chronic health issues have been so much worse and I really put it down to my body already having a lot to keep in check and then having to create the antibodies. This might not actually be how things work so happy to be corrected.

To me, it just further makes me feel that Covid would be hard on my already overloaded system.

The period thing is weird/interesting but if I was still of an age where I wanted another baby I would be more concerned.

I know this doesn't help you OP and I hope you do find answers and reassurance from your GP and from others who are in a similar situation.

I just wanted to add my experience because I would very much like to know why some women's menstrual cycles have been effected.

Popkids · 28/09/2021 17:47

There really hasn't been enough focus on this. I've been suffering with v heavy periods incl. large clots and stomach pain for the last few years. I was planning to see my GP to see what could be done as earlier this year I was really struggling.

Bizarrely since my first dose of the vaccine in spring my periods have gone back to normal. I'm still going to see my GP in case there's still an underlying issue but my period immediately after the first jab was so different to the previous ones (and has continued to be so) that there must be a connection but who knows how or why?

Rosesareyellow · 28/09/2021 17:53

My periods started being much further apart from May. I had the vaccine in June - if I’d had it a month earlier I would have definitely blamed the vaccine. Periods do fluctuate sometimes without reason. There are no doubt women who have had delayed periods or changes in cycles after the vaccine - but these are likely to happen anyway at some point. For some these have coincided with taking the vaccine.

MeAndDebbieMcGee · 28/09/2021 17:54

I don't have periods because I've got a coil but my peri symptoms got loads worse after each jab. It really impacted on my quality of life with fatigue, headaches. So I'm not going to have a booster. I can't afford to lose weeks to vaccine symptoms three times in the space of nine months.

MeAndDebbieMcGee · 28/09/2021 17:55

And yeah the Comms about "it's stress" or "it's coincidence" (ie hardly the evidence of empirical analysis) aren't convincing either.

Yummymummy2020 · 28/09/2021 18:07

Mine was all over the place but also my injection was after I had given birth so I guess they were going to be all over the place anyway. I intend to have a booster regardless as I’m more wary of covid. I am
Hoping to get pregnant again in the next few months, so hopefully it won’t interfere. On the other side of things I have heard about people getting pregnant after it that we’re having trouble conceiving so it seems to work in both directions.

Moonlaserbearwolf · 28/09/2021 18:11

Two of my friends have had excessive bleeding following Covid - so this seems to be as much of an issue (anecdotally) as the vaccine. Rock and a hard place!!
As a poster above said, it’s possible that your period issues aren’t even linked to the vaccine - could be coincidence.

Popkids · 28/09/2021 18:23

@MeAndDebbieMcGee

And yeah the Comms about "it's stress" or "it's coincidence" (ie hardly the evidence of empirical analysis) aren't convincing either.
Indeed. While it might be coincidence the fact that no research has been done means we can't rule out a causal link. That coupled with the knee jerk denial of women's experience makes people nervous.
Lostinacloud · 28/09/2021 18:26

Given your reaction to the previous doses and your age (ie very unlikely to suffer serious covid illness) I think you have plenty of time to wait before needing to make any decision. Some recent reports even suggest covid may become just another common cold by next spring so you won’t even need protection against something like that.

Babyiwantabump · 28/09/2021 19:08

Maybe everything will settle down . It’s just difficult because so many people seem to be having the same type of problems and no ones knows why!

OP posts:
FreshFreesias · 28/09/2021 19:09

Why on earth would you have a booster?
It’s just crazy.

Vaselike · 28/09/2021 19:14

My four week cycle has become closer to three weekly since I had the first (Pfizer). But I’d take a booster.

However, I’ve had my children now. If I was trying to conceive (and I’ve spent many years of my life on that journey) and counting the days of ovulation, I’d be less keen.

Babyiwantabump · 28/09/2021 19:17

I think I’m going to wait and see if there is further research- I did read somewhere that they were thinking of looking into it .

I am very worried that I seem to be having this happening still 5 ish months on though

bridgeofslides · 28/09/2021 19:19

I had 2 x Pfizer and it's affected my cycles. I will be having the booster abd expect to be called shortly as I'm in priority group. I'm 42 and done having babies. If I wasn't I might post pone the booster.

Villanelle17 · 28/09/2021 20:31

Nope. I was fine after my first pfizer, but the second that I had in May has really flared my pre existing health conditions. Also changed my periods. I know my body and it's not just coincidence. We don't say that to people suffering from long covid. I will say that I'm aware catching covid can also cause similar issues with periods and making health conditions worse, so it's a hard choice.
My sister still feels terrible and shorter time inbetween periods, which are heavier now. That was from one Oxford vaccine.
Let's be honest if men suddenly had side effects from the vaccine affecting their fertility or sexual health then they'd be taken seriously.

Username916 · 28/09/2021 20:37

When I had my booster last week my period came the next day (wasn't due for a week), and it's still going..I had the flu vacc at the same time and do wonder if it sent my body into a bit of a tailspin, I felt awful.

MeAndDebbieMcGee · 28/09/2021 22:27

@Popkids yeah agree. They didn't test these substances to see what effect they had on female hormones. Now it seems they are having an effect on female hormones, but as ever we're told it's all in our heads. Female hormones affect all sorts of body systems in women. Our bodies are regulated by them. It's like that doesn't even matter.

LakeFlyPie · 28/09/2021 22:31

I had Covid pre vaccine and completely skipped a period. No noticeable effect after 1st and 2nd Pfizer jabs. Just had 3rd, will see if it has any impact....
