Teen living with vulnerable adult please can someone help me find out how to get vaccine for them

freckles20 · 23/09/2021 09:07

My 14 yo is due a vaccine at school in mid November.

My dad is having chemo and is moving in with us in a fortnight.

I'm aware that teens living with vulnerable adults are eligible for a vaccine.

However, my GP has emailed me to say they aren't booking vaccines and can't help. They told me too call 119.

119 told me they can't help, and that my GP has to sort it.

I'm going round in circles and have pushed as hard as I can with both GP and 119 but neither will help or tell me what I need to do.

Can anyone offer any advice please?

Where are you? Could the consultant’s team assist?

PheasantsNest · 23/09/2021 09:11

They should now be doing 12-15 year olds who live with vulnerable people. Try contacting your local Clinical Commissioning Group. The whole vaccination programme for the vulnerable has been woeful.

nether · 23/09/2021 11:16

It should be the GP, and you will have to push.

They need to give her the correct coding (household of CEV/severely immune compromised) so she can be booked for two jabs (not just the one that the age group gets). And they may need to email the nearest convenient centre to confirm what she should be happening.

It's a PITA (we went through it) and I'm not surprised other GPs are making the same mistake.

I think you need to speak to the practice manager, rather than just the reception staff.

Agree - we're still trying to get hold of the third primary jab for the severely immune compromised person in our household. GP saying they have not received guidance, but I found it online!

They've been doing 16+ who live with severely immune suppressed people since March, and 12+ since July

PheasantsNest · 23/09/2021 12:19

@nether I have just managed to arrange mine for Saturday. I have rang my GP so many times. I called the CCG in the end four times. I had a phone call today from a nurse in a vaccination clinic in my next town booking me in. Nobody seems to know what on earth is going on. All you get is you can't have your booster yet it hasn't been 6 months.

StarCat2020 · 23/09/2021 13:30

@freckles20
Where do you live?

nether · 23/09/2021 15:37

I've emailed the practice manager and senior partner at the GP, so hope we'll hear something soon

Also the specialist nurse at the hospital unit, in case they can suggest anything useful.

I have to say I'm not holding my breath. At this rate booster will fall due before 3rd primary happens, then the record will get muddled, and then it'll be exactly the same admin nightmare in 6months when the actual booster falls due.

I'm tired of all this. There have been a series of errors and oversights about out jabs. I know that GPS have had a tough time of it, but it shouldn't take weeks/months of chasing every single damned time.

5zeds · 23/09/2021 15:41

Dd had hers a few weeks ago through our GP. (14 years old)

DonGray · 23/09/2021 15:48

It is your dad's GP that you need to contact - do you use the same practice?

Mosaic123 · 23/09/2021 15:52

I know it's not ideal, but could teen stay with a classmate for the fortnight if you are not able to get her vaccinated in time?

Lostinacloud · 23/09/2021 15:54

How about a serology test to see if she’s already had it? Israel studies suggest previously infected people have a less than 1% chance of reinfection or passing it on because they won’t have symptoms. Could reassure you if you can’t get the vaccine.

Spikeyball · 23/09/2021 16:13

Your first port of call is your dad's GP ( rather than your daughters) and if no joy with them then the CCG. GPs in my area are now saying all vaccinations are being done through the school vaccination service. There are lots of children in the vulnerable category who have not yet been offered the vaccine.

StarCat2020 · 23/09/2021 16:19

Walk-in centre??

Bells3032 · 23/09/2021 16:32

it may be because they don't officially live at the same address. you need to make sure your dad is registered at your address

unfortunately getting errors and mistakes with the jab sorted is a nightmare of passing the buck. you have to be persistent

freckles20 · 23/09/2021 16:43

Thank you all so much for your help. I have contacted My local CGC who have got back to me surprisingly quickly but unfortunately said that vaccinations for his age group age being carried out at school (mid nov) and there is no special provision for young people living with immunosuppressed adults. I know this isn't the case, but I'm not sure how to convince them!

This - unfortunately the GP practice have given you the wrong info and it is their responsibility to code them so that they get the appropriate letter inviting them to book.

119 should be able to help, but I have had to deal with a fair number of people who have been given incorrect info by them too!

Nether - bookings for boosters are opening daily atm. I would say it's worth checking the website several times a day to see if a clinic near you gets added on. Once they are added they are booking up within hours, so I'd definitely recommend you keep looking.

Boosters are available for anyone aged over 50 or younger with a clinical reason who is 180 days post their second Vax. Today we have been able to vaccinate anyone done on or before the 27th March.

Cuck00soup · 23/09/2021 16:56

Sorry, just re-read your post. We can do third primary vaccines at mass Vax centres, but need to give it under a different prescription; a PSD not the usual PGD.

We ask GP's to prescribe the vaccine as a patient specific direction and provide a clinical reason for the altered schedule. Then we record on paper and not the computer as we are waiting for direction on how to upload the information to the system.

freckles20 · 23/09/2021 17:02

@Cuck00soup thank you for your post. I am a bit confused sorry! Out GP said today they have now added this to my son's records but neither them or anyone else can tell me how I now book his vaccine.

I'm not trying to jump the queue- I just want to make sure my son is in the queue for young people living a vulnerable person, rather than the school queue....

Hope that makes sense!

Spikeyball · 23/09/2021 17:12

The GP should either arrange the vaccination themselves or pass on the name of the child to the CCG who should then arrange the vaccination. There was information that went out to GPs that told them this.

Whentheydontmeanwhattheysay · 23/09/2021 17:15

It really has, we have someone CEV in our house.
16 year old was finally vaccinated 5 weeks ago.

Cuck00soup · 23/09/2021 17:15

Tbh locally our clinics are literally being announced day by day (or hour by hour it feels) and so it is really hard to give people specific info about what clinic will be held on which date ahead of time. Your GP practice probably have limited information too.

The reason the coding matters is that is how the invite letters and texts get generated. You should be contacted very soon with an invitation to book an appt or attend a small scale walk in clinic.

If an appt comes up at school before you hear, I would take that appointment as a first dose to begin with and then book the second dose later through 119. It certainly won't prevent your DC getting a second dose.

It is so frustrating isn’t it?

Here. It is definitely the GP, print off the last paragraph of page 2 and give it to the surgery.

DH is eligible to a 3rd primary dose the same as *@nether, and @Cuck00soup**. Different situation, bet definitely same frustration!

First was a phone consult with GP for something unrelated and he asked at the time, was told they had no control over lists. 2nd waiting for bloods so asked at reception, no joy. Today face to face with GP - I printed off the relevant info from link and they said they would bring it up in the ‘meeting’. He had a phone all 1/2 an hour later and also has his on Saturday.

nether · 23/09/2021 19:02

Thanks @Cuck00soup

Yes, it's third primary, not booster.

There's no problem with getting a slot for the actual shot. It's getting the correct admin for a third primary that is the hold up.

And I think it's very important to get it correctly recorded as third primary, or else they won't get their booster in 6 months.

(And I'm then wondering if the 500,000 will be on annual autumn shots from autumn 2022, or if everyone will have forgotten us by then and our approx March boosters will be nicely wearing off in time for that winter virus season. You can tell I'm getting very jaded by this, can't you?)
