What are the rules in your office?

The office I work in want us to WFH if we are at all ill. (Unless you know what it is eg. Period related or an ongoing illness).

All well and good but some people have kids and now it's back to school etc they are picking up all the sniffles. So are having to work from home. Which is leading to some management disbelieving that they do infact have yet another cold. It's going to be a long winter!

If we are ill we are meant to be off sick.

If we have any mild symptoms but still fit to work we wfh.

But we also have a choice as to whether to wfh or go into the office generally.

Scarby9 · 22/09/2021 13:13

All in.
Windows open all the time, and doors where practical.
Hand sanitise.
Wipe computers and surfaces after use.

Windows open sounds good. Might suggest that. So are people going in even with colds? It seems a bit weird that a couple of years ago someone with a cold wouldn't even register.

We’re all still pretending that the communal tea and coffee supplies and shared teaspoons transmit Covid, hence there now being about 100 individual jars of coffee / boxes of teabags in the staff kitchens.

We’re on official hybrid working 50/50 home/office, WFH if you have Covid symptoms or your child has been sent home from school due to outbreak. You’re correct, of course, that this means nobody can tell the difference between those who are genuine, and all those who just want to be 100% at home and so are making it up.

BoomChicka · 22/09/2021 13:29

We ask for a PCR test for covid symptoms but if negative then come in if you are fit to. Off sick or WFH if not.

LST · 22/09/2021 13:31

We're still WFH anyway. But if you need to go to the office you can. If you have been on contact with anyone with covid they don't want you in and we still have to wear masks.

RavingAnnie · 22/09/2021 13:36

They can't ask you to WFH if you are unwell (but presumably well enough to work) then criticise you when you do as asked!

Tbh I think it's a great policy. Some people come into work when they really shouldn't and are very unwell and then they spread it around to everyone who either is then off sick or performing below par because they are not well.

WoozySnoozy · 22/09/2021 14:33

@RavingAnnie yes I think its a good policy. I don't think they thought through just how many times someone with a young child might get a sniffle!

No rules, just don't come in with covid, anything else goes though. Lots of talk about SD/testing/masks but no one doing it, covid soup.

Also, if your child gets it, you can't wfh, you ought to take unpaid leave.

Absolute arseholes

Comefromaway · 22/09/2021 19:57

Covid or cold type symptoms needs a pcr test. Other than that, everyone is in.

HighgateFun · 22/09/2021 19:59

In my office we have people turning up with streaming noses, continuous coughs yet the doors and windows remain sealed shut because the manager doesn't like the cold.
We have lateral flow tests in the office for anyone who may want to test but because of their unnreliability I'm not feeling too reassured.

SamMil · 22/09/2021 20:01

We're mainly still working from home but gradually starting to go in more (will eventually be once or twice a week). There are no rules about general illness - just lateral flow before going into the office and don't go in if you have covid! I think most people are staying at home if they have a cold though, even though it's not an official rule.

Oysterbabe · 22/09/2021 20:01

We don't have any really. We've been told we can go in if we want but don't have to. I go in one morning a week for a change of scene. I don't think anyone would go in if they were unwell in any way.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 22/09/2021 20:03

We're in for a minimum of 2 days a week. Masks at our desks, a one way system that I ignore if everyone else is at their desks and some windows open. I've spent the summer coughing due to allergies thanks to whatever has wafted in through the window and I have no intention of being in the office with the windows open in the winter.

I hate working from home but I hate sitting in a draft and freezing more!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 22/09/2021 20:06

I meant to add there are no rules about general illness, only not to go in with a cough (I'm exempt from that one as I cough all the time) or high temperature. No requirements for a LFT either thank god.

Watapalava · 22/09/2021 20:06

we are all in, no rules except dont go in with covid.

Colds, flu and non covid illnesses are fine if fit to work

same as any other year tbh

PickleC · 22/09/2021 20:10

We are all in three days a week and the institution has chosen this moment to start hotdesking in a sealed office with 200 people per floor. Which should be.....interesting.

No rules around what to do if people feel ill but I would probably be able to ask my team to wfh for a few days

plixy · 22/09/2021 20:12

My manager doesn't believe in cvoid so we have no rules. Everything is as it was before covid.

Shieldingending · 22/09/2021 20:26

No rules whatsoever, we are expected to go in unless we have one of the obvious three Covid symptoms. I’m a teacher, children all full of colds, sore throats so inevitably we catch them too!!

EileenGC · 22/09/2021 20:28

I'm in Germany and here the doctor signs you off sick if you get a cold, you get full pay. Not something new Covid brought around either. So people are used to just staying home instead of pushing through an illness, even if they could work somehow.

My company's (we don't have offices) policy is stay at home if displaying Covid symptoms, or after recent close contact with a positive/suspected positive case. Definitely stay at home if a household member is positive - but that still applies to the general population here, vaccinated or not.

Scottishgirl85 · 22/09/2021 20:29

We're not back yet and likely won't be until next year!

Drywhitefruitycidergin · 22/09/2021 20:37

Our office is open but new smart working policy not finalised and rolled out yet so completely ad hoc.
Go in for collaborative meetings / wfh for everything else unless you find office easier.
Still one way system, mask wearing for walking around, distancing/reduced meeting room numbers to allow for it etc.
Very happy with flexibility.

Stripyhoglets · 22/09/2021 20:37

Hybrid working. At least one day in office a week can be in full time if you want.
Wfh if ill with cold symptoms. Obvs stay home if get a positive test! Still spaced out more physically so only half the desks being used. (not 2m but 1.5 I think). Windows open.
Wear masks when away from desks.
Clean desks as arive and leave.

SilverGlitterBaubles · 22/09/2021 20:41

Does wearing masks when moving about an open plan office really make any difference if you are sitting there unmasked all day anyway? Sorry to derail but see this mentioned a lot can't work out if it's good practice or Covid safe theatre.

monkeyblonde · 22/09/2021 20:44

Come and work in a school guys, you'll soon get over worrying about whether the windows are open or how many people are in a room!
