What are the chances?

My youngest DS tested positive on an LFT on Monday. I tested him on the off chance as it’s been going round his class, he was asymptomatic but has since lost his sense of smell. Took him (and the rest of the household) for a PCR yesterday, no results yet but I’m assuming he probably will be positive?

Anyway, if he is - what are the actually chances my DH and myself will catch it from him? We are both double jabbed and all I’ve read from official sources suggests that the chances are low….however anecdotally I know lots of people who’ve caught it despite being double jabbed?

Think you have answered your own question.

Who knows?

Some double jab catch some don't.
Assuming asymptomatic contributes to reducing viral load being expelled.

Badgercity · 22/09/2021 09:21

I haven’t known any friends or family to not get it once a child tests positive. But that doesn’t tally with the official stats.

With Delta, once one person brings it into the household, the rest are almost certain to be be exposed to it (unless your house is big enough to stay completely segregated). If you're really lucky being vaccinated will prevent you from getting infected, but you more than likely will be.

Badgercity · 22/09/2021 09:40

Do people generally find out what variant they have? I’m assuming not, unless maybe you get seriously poorly.

OP posts:
AlexandraEiffel · 22/09/2021 10:02

They're all delta now.

Anecdata: My friend's daughter had it recently and no one in the house caught it. It's not a big house.

The stats are out there, there's also lots of threads with people talking about whether they caught it or not. Some do, some don't.

Badgercity · 22/09/2021 10:18

PCR results back for me and oldest DS, negative Smile But nothing yet for youngest DS (who had positive LFT) or DH.

I am still holding onto being negative along with DH despite all children having it. Need to continue isolating till Saturday but we’ve had covid in house for 15 days now! Ds back at school but poor lad fell asleep about 6 pm! He was shattered!

That’s reassuring! My fingers and toes are crossed for you!

DS has it and near the end and so far none of the rest of us have. That said DH had Covid in December and myself and DD in March (antibody test doe to ZOE covid study) and we didnt this time. My Mum who visited the day before it did and she hadnt had it before.

So for us vaccinated (me/DH double DD single) plus previous COVID has so far prevailed.

It has been interesting though because how I felt with Original, DH with Alpha and my Mum and DS with Delta anecdotally has been very different.

I was very much cough/crackling chest feeling it in the lungs and trouble breathing.

DH was cough but with cold symptoms

Mum/DS barely coughed they both were sore throat/headache

The only thing that has remained is the loss of taste and smell

Badgercity · 22/09/2021 11:18

That’s interesting Quartz it’s such a strange and variable illness.

DH has now had his negative result. So the only one we don’t know is DS, I wonder if there’s anything to read into that?!

I work in social care so will be PCR tested again tomorrow at work any way, still showing negative on my daily LFT (work rules that we test before every shift)

middleager · 22/09/2021 11:26

DS2 caught Covid last November, none of us got it.

DS1 has Covid and now so do I! Waiting for DH and DS2 PCR results.

We didn't do much differently, but perhaps it's the sheer fact this time it's Delta?

middleager · 22/09/2021 11:27

I'm double vaccinated, as is DH.

Neighneigh · 22/09/2021 11:41

We're in the same boat, both me and DH double dosed and negative pcrs, eldest son positive, youngest son pcr negative....we are going to do some flow tests later this week but only ds with a positive case has any symptoms.

Badgercity · 22/09/2021 11:47

Out of interest, as DS test results isn’t back yet, we did another LFT which is positive again. So I’m strongly suspecting him to have covid. I am a bit unsure if I got a good enough sample on the PCR test for an accurate result though. It was in a walkthrough terrapin type building, we were all crammed into a tiny room and it was very stressful!

TerribleZebra · 22/09/2021 13:30

DS (no vax) had it, me (2x vax) has it now, DH (2 x vax) and DD (1 x vax) no symptoms and both still testing negative on PCR and LTFs. There appears to be no clear indication about who might get it or when. We've had it in the house for 12 days now that we are aware of.

Badgercity · 22/09/2021 13:31

This is driving me mad! 3 of us have had our negative result back, the one kid we really need to know the results for is now 5 hours behind the rest of us! Why are his results delayed?! Typical!

OP posts:
Sulla1105 · 22/09/2021 13:53

My DD caught it first, she is 14 so not jabbed, over the next 7 days the entire household all caught it despite isolating everyone as they came down with it. My wife and I are both double jabbed (AZ), however, it is likely that at least 3 of the infections came form school as my wife is a teacher there and it is running away with itself. 12 teaching staff off with covid currently and over 100 children.

ducktape · 22/09/2021 14:38

DD7 and DD9 both had it last month. I am double jabbed. I slept in the same room as the both of them for the 2 nights prior to them showing symptoms and had shared a drink bottle the day before too. I didn't catch it, nor did DH though he didn't have the same degree of exposure. We tried to distance ourselves as much as possible, but didn't isolate them because at that age they need hugs and cuddles when they are unwell.

ducktape · 22/09/2021 14:38

Should have added DH also double vaccinated, he had AZ and I had Pfizer

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 22/09/2021 14:44

3 of us have had it separately. 2 of us in the last 8 weeks so likely delta. Friend has just had delta and none if her house hold caught it

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 22/09/2021 14:45

We didn't distance from each other at all

Badgercity · 22/09/2021 15:24

We just got a negative for DS too, but in light of symptoms (sense of smell) occurring after the test and another positive LFT today we’ve been asked to get a second PCR. This time 119 advised we do a home one as it may be easier to get a better sample. So it will be Friday at the earliest that we have any results. Maddening!

OP posts:
Badgercity · 22/09/2021 16:08

And now my eldest son has a positive LFT (test for school on Sundays and Wednesdays) despite a negative PCR today!
What’s going on?

What are the chances?
OP posts:
Mykittensmittens · 22/09/2021 16:11

I’m very similar.

DD 13 is pos (PCR confirmed)

DS, DH and I are all negative. We are doing everything we can not to get it. She is in her room most of the time (and okay with that for now). Meals outside with 2m distance. Masks on and 2m distance indoors and only for short periods. Her crockery and cups are put by her in the dishwasher (I leave the door open). She has a bathroom to herself which I won’t go in until this is over. Changing her bedding is a military operation (I have a thread on that!) but so far day 3/4 and we’re all still negative including on a PCR apart from her.

I’ll be honest, keeping up the vigilance is exhausting me already. I’m worried too about the effect of all this segregation on her but she is adamant she’s okay for now.

I really hope it is possible to avoid it with this much care to do so as otherwise I’ll be exhausted from it on top of any Covid fatigue.

Not true, my son tested positive at the start of the school holidays, we live in a small two bedroom house with one bathroom, neither myself or my dh caught it off him we are both fully vaccinated, we live in Bolton where the Delta varient was intially very prevalent.
