Symptoms in primary school child

Please just bear with me.

Child in my sons class had a high temperature and cough on Thursday - mum kept him off but he was better Friday so she sent him into school and did a PCR on Friday before she dropped him off. Child was at school on Friday and doing sports club on sat and as ‘he felt better and fine’ - he’s now tested positive and she’s posted this in the what’s app group. I thought a child had to isolate if they had symptoms until the PCR came back?

She’s breezily posted about her child now testing positive etc and they are now isolating. Have I misread the guidance I thought unvaccinated you keep them off until negative PCR if they either have a positive lateral flow or have had symptoms she said as his symptoms were better Friday she sent him in

Good move sending the information to the school. This woman is either a bit thick or thinks the rules don't apply to her. I'm so fed up with people like this.
@IAAP sorry to badger but have you arranged the PCR for your DC yet? You know they have been a close contact and you don't want to be putting the rest of the school community at more risk.

Why is the birthday party so big? Is it for the whole school??
I've done a lateral flow but we have to wait to see if the school identifies them as close contacts. They have no symptoms.

Both I think. I've emailed it to the school. I've now sent two emails to Mrs G The HT. She can deal with it. Close contacts need to be identified by the school and test and trace.

Birthday party is a joint one for Year 4 and 5 -she has two children one in each year -so has invited 120 kids most of which have said yes.

School won't identify them as contacts because that's not their role anymore. Test and trace aren't too worried about school interactions more play dates, sleepovers etc. You can arrange a pcr based on the information you already have.

IAAP · 19/09/2021 14:44

He's done x3 negative LFD.

@IAAP you don't need test and trace to tell you to do a PCR as you know your DC sat next to the positive child on Friday and played sport with them on Saturday, you know they are a close contact. Hopefully they will stay well but do test them with a PCR (you can request home/post PCR kits to be sent out & you would receive it tomorrow).

That is bizarre to hold whole year group parties by that age - her DC probably don't even interact with half the children invited.

HadEnoughofOtherThreads · 19/09/2021 15:03

Schools are no longer responsible for managing contacts.

Start of symptoms is Day 0. Self-isolation ends at midnight on Day 10. Therefore, the individual can leave home on Day 11.

Well done for alerting the school.

You could test your DC now with a LFT, as you know that they sat next to the positive child.

sirfredfredgeorge · 19/09/2021 15:39

He's done x3 negative LFD

LFD's are not validated in primary school children, obviously they do sometimes work, but equally they could regularly fail, it's not unreasonable to believe they would be less accurate as they rely on a high load of the virus and young children tend to have less.

Close contacts need to be identified by the school and test and trace

It is nothing to do with the school, just test and trace, and they are unlikely to be concerned about kids in the same class.

whittingtonmum · 19/09/2021 15:55

You are not supposed to use lateral flow test if the child had symptoms. If symptoms the only test which can accurately identify if it's Covid or not is a PCR test. So very unreasonable for the lady to send her kid to school despite having had symptoms saying LTF was negative.

As for the party I would report her to test and trace. It's her legal duty to ensure that her child isolates so going ahead with the party is a really bad idea on many fronts.

ChristmasCovid · 19/09/2021 16:07

If she decides to go ahead with the party, find details of your local public health team - usually through your council and report.

toomuchlaundry · 19/09/2021 18:16

Who has such a big birthday party for kids even pre-COVID times? (slightly missing the point!)

I would be avoiding that like the plague (as it will be probably end up being like the plague!)

Ki0612 · 19/09/2021 21:49

Yes, she did the wrong thing but you can only control what you do and your children. As you are very concerned you should book your child for a pcr, schools have nothing to do with contact tracing anymore and not send them to the party. It's done now so complaining to the school will get you nowhere I'm sure they feel the same as you already, doesn't mean they can do anything about it.

@IAAP did you hear from school or the parent today?
