So families with 12-17 years olds still can't really travel?

If I have read the various requirements (UK and EU countries) correctly - it seems teenagers getting one jab won't count as vaccinated for EU travel (eg in France they won't have a vaccine passport so won't be able to to into restaurants, museums etc etc without a covid test from a pharmacy every few days) and they'll still have to have a waste of time PCR test on their return. Which means short visits to Europe are pretty much a write-off and it's not looking great for holidays abroad generally. This seems awfully unfair - that the one jab puts them in limbo.
@EileenGC I thought I'd read you couldn't , but that was on uk govt website so who knows!
Never get information on entry requirements for other countries on the UK govt website. It can be outdated or interpreted wrongly. Plus it holds no validity if you tried to argue with a border agent on arrival to X country - they’d go with their own websites as to what the truth and legalities are.

Check the respective countries’ own official sources.

Germany absolutely does allow you in with a test only - doesn’t even have to be PCR. But you cannot skip quarantine without the vaccines, so obviously I don’t think there are many people using this option.

I find it AMAZING that people are just finding out that covid is a world wide issue and different countries have their own rules!

Lots of countries are treating passengers from our country as a source of further variants, and we can’t visit.

Blubells · 18/09/2021 22:45

I thought that a 12-18 un-double-vaccinated person would also have to isolate for 10 days on return to UK? This makes holidays effectively impossible for any family with teens, surely?

They don't,

Where did you read that they don't have to isolate? I have a 17 year old who hasn't had both jabs. I would like to know if they need to isolate for 10 days after a holiday in October?

Honestly, don’t people know how to use google anymore? Attached photo is from the government’s travel website.

And by all means, check closer to the date that nothing has changed. It could change whilst you’re abroad - who knows - although they seem keen to avoid further confusion from now on.

Regarding the ski holiday in Italy, use of ski lifts etc: the green pass is mandatory for all kids above 12, but that doesn’t mean that vaccine is the only accepted solution. Tests every 48h at the moment are accepted and valid. The entire procedure though becomes more complicated, and expensive, at 15euro/test. For a teen and one week it’s not the end of the world (compared to the rest of the expense ;-) but I have a relative who’s doing this to go to work because she refuses the vaccine, and I suspect that means spending a large % of her salary in tests…

I'm well aware of the fact each country had their own rules. My main issue is that by giving 12-17 year olds just one vaccine the government is leaving them in a situation where, effectively, they are unvaccinated for the purpose of travel.

We want to travel to france next year with a child in this age group (and one younger.)

I hadn't realised if they had one jab (hopefully soon) that wouldn't be enough.

I had hoped by next year they might be as we are with cafes etc but maybe not?

My main fear is testing positive once in France! With such high rates this must happen to a faif number of travllers!?

clearsommespace · 19/09/2021 05:12

In France, the restrictions for 12-17 year olds come into effect on 30th September.
Until then, minors over 12 can go to restaurants, museums etc regardless of vaccination status.
There is talk of removing the requirements later this year (but not until half term.) The system was introduced to encourage people to get vaccinated...which it has done.

clearsommespace · 19/09/2021 05:13

Sorry - not until after half term.

musicalfrog · 19/09/2021 05:27

Plenty of places you can travel with a teen.

I think you meant to add the word 'abroad' to your OP.

Just enjoy what the beautiful UK has to offer until all this madness is over.

Coyoacan · 19/09/2021 05:41

Mexico is mysteriously on the red list, but when that stops, there will be no demand for a covid passport.

Unfortunately that link does not clarify the position regarding unvaccinated under 18s from October.

Under 18s are only mentioned further down the page describing the current rules (where they are exempt) not the proposed new ones.

Blubells · 19/09/2021 08:05

In fact the new guidance yesterday says:

"Unvaccinated or partially vaccinated adults aged 11 and over must still present a negative test ahead of arrival to the UK, and then quarantine at home for ten days. They must take PCR tests on day two and eight. They can end self-isolation early under the test to release scheme which requires an additional PCR test on day five"

That would mean any family with not double unvaccinated under 18s can travel abroad from October?!

Blubells · 19/09/2021 08:05

Cannot travel (sorry)

LiamGallagherIsHot · 19/09/2021 08:29

That’s what we’ll be doing as only 1 out of 4 of us will be vaccinated. But it’s hard when you have family and friends abroad, it’s not just a holiday, people want to see their loved ones. We have family and friends in various countries that we’re just not going to see for a while longer yet. Hopefully some will be travelling to see us.

MarshaBradyo · 19/09/2021 08:31

It is an issue

I will have two dc who are in age range and only one

I think this is still outdated information - it still has about amber countries etc on that link
EileenGC · 19/09/2021 08:49

It is not ‘outdated’ information because the current rules are in place for another 2 weeks. The website displays current regulations.

The new rules were announced less than 48 hours ago, the details haven’t yet been published. I would expect them to be updated in the coming weeks. Anyone who rushed to book holidays without checking the new rules (which we don’t know yet) could be faced with a big surprise.

I’ve been travelling an awful lot since June and no countries announce a change of rules 2 weeks in advance. You get 2-3 days’ warning so we can consider ourselves lucky if UK updates all the details more in advance.

Eileen, quick hijack if I may! (I know you are Spanish) On a FB group I'm in, someone is screeching blue murder about sueing the Spanish govt because she was refused boarding as the airport staff said her LFT to return was too old. She said the UK govt says 72 hours is fine. The people at the airport say it has to be no more than 48. (that would be the case here in Italy) do you know if there is a discrepancy between what the UK accepts and what the Spanish airports ask for? And who would be correct in this case? Thanks!
Blubells · 19/09/2021 08:58

Why can't they?
They just need to do the other tests etc.

Because unvaccinated children would have to isolate for 10 days after returning to the UK.

This would mean missing school as most half term school holidays are one week long.

toobusytothink · 19/09/2021 09:31

Yes - re 12-18 yr olds - I know what the current rules are but it doesn’t say about the new rules. Doesn’t say exemption for children so will have to assume they have to do day 2 and day 8 and isolate for the meantime I guess. Reckon they will clarify at some point …

Hedgehogface · 19/09/2021 09:34

My understanding is that when the guidance is updated in 2 weeks, 12-15 year olds will be considered as fully vaccinated from the UK point of view but as the OP says we don’t know whether other countries will accept this as well.
