Changes in period after vaccine

FrostyFlamingo · 16/09/2021 20:47

I have have both my doses of the Covid vaccine (Pfizer) and since just the first one I have only had one period!

All my life (well since I started my periods) they have always been super regular like clockwork.

I was 75 days late after having the first dose. Then had a normal period. Currently 37 days late. No chance of pregnancy either.

Just wondered if this has happened to anyone else?

I haven’t heard of your scenario, but I was a week early after my first vaccination - unusual for me.
I have several friends who’ve had period issues following covid, rather than the vaccine. One friend bled for 5 weeks after she had covid, which had never happened to her before so she assumed a link with the virus.

There’s been lots of women reporting this and other changes to their cycle. There’s an article on the bbc about it today with calls for it to be looked into.

AntiSocialDistancer · 16/09/2021 20:59

This is in the news at the minute

My cycle is normally every 23 days, but after my second dose of AZ my next cycle was 41 days

moregarlic · 16/09/2021 21:03

They’re currently looking into this after so many women flagged it up on the yellow card system.

I hope your cycle returns to normal soon.

FrostyFlamingo · 16/09/2021 22:55

Thank you. Just had a little read of the article. I wasn't aware that so many other women experienced changes in their periods.

Mine is still regular but my blood pressure often falls at the start of my period now. I have had covid twice and one vaccine and the impact on my period was much more extreme after I had the actual virus than after I had the vaccine. There was definitely an impact from both though.

Oddly my pattern of symptoms round the start of my period has also changed. I now get period pain for a full week before, but less weirdness on the first day of my period. That so-far anyway, post Delta covid.

@FrostyFlamingo - That's amazing to have nothing for such a long time. It must be very disconcerting.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 17/09/2021 00:37

Yes but I am peri menopausal so it could be that.
I am awaiting a scan as my periods have gone near constant and insanely heavy. I have been logging the quantity in my Mooncup and I lost over a pint of blood in 24 hours on Monday.
Will be interesting to see if they can find a cause.

Sugarandtime · 17/09/2021 07:45

I know the Daily Mail ran an article yesterday about it.
Unfortunately from what I’ve seen they have change the article today downplaying the issue and removed thousands of comments that had been made by females that had also had big changes in their cycle after the injections.

Antonia2021 · 17/09/2021 07:49

Had the virus in 2020 and period was two months late

Novel virus isn’t it to the human species ? Not really surprising it affects us so systemically !

LiamGallagherIsHot · 17/09/2021 07:50

Is your doctor aware of that? That’s an awful lot of blood in 24 hours. Do you feel ill? Really hope you’re ok.

HairyFloppins · 17/09/2021 07:53

My cycles have got longer and heavier since I had the Pfizer vaccine. I'm 40 so it could be hormonal as well.

I had covid in December and my cycles were fine after that.

AlohaMolly · 17/09/2021 07:55

Melanie the midwife has been highlighting studies in a pretty non biased way on Instagram.

ChaToilLeam · 17/09/2021 07:56

I’m perimenopausal and my cycles are irregular. After the AZ vaccine I had one ALMIGHTY period - one week of incredibly heavy bleeding and one week more normal - and since then not a thing.

DumplingsAndStew · 17/09/2021 08:10

It's been widely reported that some women are having menstrual changes post-vaccine. I'm sure there were women reporting changes post-infection too, weren't there?

Report any side effects to the yellow card system, they are looking into it.

FeedMeSantiago · 17/09/2021 08:34

Mine have been strange post Pfizer. Had both jabs close together, my period after my first jab was very light, my next period, after my second jab, was also very light. I then had a normal-ish period whilst isolating with Covid and the next period was also very light.

The light periods were so light they were barely there.

CrazyCatStory · 17/09/2021 08:43

Please use the yellow card scheme to report any side effects. It’s the best way to help the MHRA realise what’s going on, and how many are affected. This link is for the covid specific side effects.

Thanks, he’s aware of the general problem and prescribed high dose iron and referred me for a scan but I haven’t spoken to him this week. Have booked a private scan for this Sunday to try and speed things up as NHS scans seem to have a huge backlog. I don’t feel brilliant tbh but I guess a pint is only what they take when you give blood and it’s been less since then.

I would love to know if more women than usual are going to their doctor with period trouble. There are so many possible reasons for period changes it’s only by a big statistical survey they will be able to work out if anything is going on.

It's a travesty that in its determination to stay on message that "the vaccines are safe and effective" the medical establishment has dismissed the concerns of you (and others) as "coincidence" or "not linked to the vaccine" which has delayed this from being looked into for at least 6 months.

What I don't understand is why the medical establishment has taken do long to say "Hmmm, yes there might be a link. We'll look into it."

MLMbotsno · 17/09/2021 09:40

There was a doctor on the news a couple of days ago discussing this.

She said that a late period after the vaccine was reasonable common and even more common after the actual virus. She said in the vast majority of cases it returned to normal. Her explanation was that the immune system is fired up and it affects hormones which in turn affects periods but nothing much to worry about. If longer go chat to doctor and then referral to gynae if really worried.

MLMbotsno · 17/09/2021 09:41

Yes in both situations either vaccine or covid infection this has been reported. So avoiding the vaccine to avoid a late period when it could more likely happen post infection seems not thought out.

Makinglists · 17/09/2021 09:47

Yes - I reported my change via yellow card. I am 51 so bound to be near menopause but i was regular after first jab had period then another one two weeks later then nothing - so far instant menopause - well almost 5 months. For me Im not bothered but if it happened to me 10 years ago when I was trying to concieve DS2 I would have been gutted.

liveforsummer · 17/09/2021 10:09

I reliably don't have periods due to being on the mini pill. Had first dose of AZ just over a month ago and woke up to a period the next day. Have since had another 3 cases of bleeding that's lasted 2-4 days. Definitely linked!

Well said.

When the vaccine blood clot issues came up they were able to show us clear and beautifully presented data showing the difference in your chances of getting blood clots from covid and from the jab. I fear we are a very long way indeed from seeing something like that about periods, though it could reassure women through actual data rather than patronising blandishments, because first we have to get over the barrier of women not being taken seriously about what is happening to our own bodies.

Sugarandtime · 17/09/2021 11:02

Proper independent studies into this rather than ones compiled by the vaccine manufacturer would go a long way in helping and giving confidence to many females to hopefully understand what is going on with any issues with their cycles after the injections.
