Fitness class overcrowded

Zig27 · 14/09/2021 20:34

I went to an aerobics class as the instructor said places were limited. When I got there people just walked in without putting any sanitiser on. There were 26 people in the hall and not all of the external doors were open for ventilation. I just feel people have become complacent now they have had the vaccine and things have reopened. I won’t be going again as I felt uncomfortable. Especially with so much movement, sweating and breathing. Anyone else avoiding indoor classes?

Is there any need for some of you to be so rude? Why is the only option carrying on like covid doesn’t exist or be told to stay home?

The OP complained about people sweating breathing and moving in fitness classes, the OP is being rude expecting people not to.

There is a really easy answer don't go.

vickyc90 · 14/09/2021 22:05

Seems a waste of time sanitising when you are going to be getting hot and sweaty with an air born pathogen. I've kind of given up, work with it, have had it and the kids back at school so waiting for them to bring it home

Holidaytan · 14/09/2021 22:06

I went to a fitness class that was overcrowded with other people……. Hmmmmm…… you were one of the ones contributing to the busyness……

I do find it bizarre that people go to events that are run for groups of people to attend, then complain that it’s busy with people……..

Yeah, these classes arent run as a charity,. They're a business, and they need paying customers in order to be viable.

As for complaining about "so much movement, sweating and breathing"? In a fitness class? I'd be worried if it were any other way, frankly.

Maybe if you don't want to share the space with other paying customers, you might be better spending the money on a personal trainer.

EileenGC · 14/09/2021 22:16

This is an airborne virus. How on earth is hand sanitiser supposed to help? (Unless you’re all putting equipment in your mouth or something…)

Apart from that, what you’re saying isn’t unreasonable. It’s okay not being comfortable yet going places where no restrictions/protective measures are in place.

Driftingblue · 14/09/2021 22:19

A class should abide it’s own posted Covid standards. If they want to relax those standards, the class operators are free to do that within legal limits, but they should make that clear before people pay for the class . Preferably they should make that clear before people arrive for the class .

So if the website says that the class size would be capped and that particular hygiene rules would be followed, I would expect those standards to be met.

We don't know what the upper limit for the class was, so no reason to believe they didn't follow their own 'standards'.

I would have preferred her honesty in stating the class numbers. If there is no problem, why hide the numbers. I could have decided not to go. It was these number of people pre covid days. I suppose she wants to make as much as she can as she has hired a hall.

All restrictions have been lifted, covid standards are irrelevant in this instance.

Dreamstate · 14/09/2021 23:05

Well you can always do online classes in the safety of your own home if it bothers you that much

LSLLM · 14/09/2021 23:13

If she’s hiring a hall now can you imagine what it was like during the lockdowns?

As someone who relied on hiring halls, it was AWFUL , and now we’re trying to pick up on all that lost income, with increased hall hires in some cases.

There is no limitations on the number of people in the classes now and instructors are torn between doing what they are told is okay and what they can afford to do morally.

Please, if you don’t like it, don’t make a fuss and just don’t go. Running classes in these times is a real stress.

You could get covid on the way to your class. Its as easy as that. I caught it teaching a class of 3, all socially distanced , ventilated, the lot. Don’t think a smaller group will make a hell of a lot of difference

Egghead68 · 15/09/2021 06:16

Yes I avoid them and do my exercise classes at home on zoom.

I presumed that the PP meant there was covid standards imposed by the gym. Whilst all national legal restrictions have been lifted, businesses are free to impose their own requirements.
KeepScrapingBy · 15/09/2021 07:33

The class I used to go to is still keeping social distancing and other Covid measures. It's limited to 15 people even though the hall can take 25. Might it be worth looking for another class?

IsabellesMissingSock · 15/09/2021 07:39

"Moving, sweating and breathing" 🤣 at an exercise class n all!

rwalker · 15/09/2021 07:40

I get where the OP is coming from if she would of known she would of made the choice not to go.

I don't think she was expecting or wanting loads of restriction just the info so she could make the choice

Feelingoktoday · 15/09/2021 07:43

The instructor needs to generate an income. There are no more grants available. They are going to teach as many people as possible. Just don’t go but don’t expect another adult to forfeit income because you don’t like it. These have been really tough times for PTs, a lot were not entitled to any help.

IsabellesMissingSock · 15/09/2021 07:48

Well then she could always have left when she was that bothered by people exercising at an exercise class.
RobinPenguins · 15/09/2021 07:53

I don’t think it’s financially viable to keep running classes for reduced enough numbers to keep everybody happy. So the choice, which lots are happy to make, is to go ahead with what’s available or look for an alternative such as an outdoor boot camp or at home class. Or it might be possible to pay a lot more for somewhere with reduced numbers. At least the choice is available for people now whereas before it was that no one could go even if they were happy to take a small risk.

Hand sanitizer will do shite all in this situation though, so YABU to criticise people for not using that.

Redhotchilis · 15/09/2021 08:08

We were sweating along with hundreds of students at a Fratellis gig last weekend.

I completely understand if some people are still being cautious, but I do feel most people want to get on with life now and learn to live with this.

Of course, it is up to you if you join in, but we cannot expect businesses that are on their knees trying to survive, to continue with reduced numbers ad infinitum.

Kevinishot · 15/09/2021 08:13

I teach fitness classes & am back to full numbers. I got no help from the government & had to be closed for a year. It’s been fucking shit. Don’t like it, don’t go!
Also, sweating is irrelevant- no-one got covid through sweat.

RunningOnFumes · 15/09/2021 08:59

It sounds as if the advertising of the class was misleading as places were not in fact limited. I can see why the OP is annoyed.

I'm a gym addict and was straight back the day restrictions were lifted - but my gym (CrossFit) has limits on class numbers, we are still doing temp checks/sanitiser and the ventilation is v good (industrial unit with open front!). I personally wouldnt be very comfortable in a crowded and unventilated hall.

HelloMissus · 15/09/2021 09:00

No likely, no dancey.
Simple.

DumplingsAndStew · 15/09/2021 09:09

Not commenting on the size of the class or ventilation... but on the lack of sanitiser.

How do you know these people hadn't just sanitiser their hands on the way in? Or, God forbid, washed them. I think many are forgetting that proper hand washing is still more efficient than sanitisation. Sanitiser is useful in situations where handwashing isn't possible.

Faffinator · 15/09/2021 09:17

No comment on the overcrowding but the obsession with sanitiser is just Confused. I went to a shop at the weekend, in a mask. Lady on the door wouldn't let me in until I sanitised my hands. I refused as I have bad dermatitis at the moment. Then she said I could come in if I didn't touch anything!
