Support thread for the shielded and previously shielded

I'm not sure if the old thread is still active so I thought I'd start a new one for those who are or were shielded.
I was shielded, I'm double jabbed and my ds's school is full of covid with now over 10% of kids off with positive cases. Ds tested negative but has a sore throat, cough, snot, sneezing and slightly raised temperature. I have woken with a sore throat, headache and fever. We both tested negative at the weekend but since then cases at school have exploded. There's about 25 kids positive now over all but 2 year groups. I admit to feeling pretty anxious again about covid after being far more relaxed, but still very careful, over the summer. They've only been back at school a week and it's rife.

I'll join. I'm in the middle of chemotherapy and DS had a positive lateral flow yesterday after developing a headache and temp. Currently waiting for PCR to come back.

Im a nurse and worked throughout the lockdowns until my diagnosis so never shielded as such. I've been careful but not anxious until they changed the rules about contacts of positive cases not having to isolate.

I had covid last year, I'm double jabbed but I'm anxious I won't lie.

Tinydancer321 · 14/09/2021 09:17

It is rife. I’m not classed as CEV but cv at the min (third trimester actually 9 days till due, and have asthma).
I’m skiving the kids of this week can’t see me being able to next. I’m lucky as just have the worry until the baby is born and that’s enough. So I really feel for your worry. I have 3 in schools and feel it’s a matter of time 😭

Popplebop · 14/09/2021 10:59

I will join as well. On the shielded list all through but didn't follow full shielding. NHS worker but I was allowed to WFH because my role is easily & fully done from a home office.

Double vaccinated since March and then got Covid at the end of August anyway after a week of holiday where we were out and about - but I was still being very cautious and staying outside etc.

Rest of family managed to avoid getting it so there is hope! Teenagers are back in school and there are some cases but not too many (yet). I am sure there will be though.

FlatteredFool · 18/09/2021 09:15

My son's class and the school
In general are still dropping like flies. There have been parties that they've all attended and I'm really worried about catching covid when I'm already full of another virus. Ds has been off all week with a fever and sore throat and snot but is fine and PCR negative. My PCR negative too. It's such a worry but the rest of the parents are very blasé which is easy when you're not vulnerable. I feel like a fun sponge.

I was shielding until it ended, double jabbed by April and caught covid in August. I was hospitalised and am still not fully recovered.

So frankly I think covid has already done it's worst to me and I didn't die.

For the first time since February 2020 I feel free. I don't worry about catching it, can go to hospital appointments safely, go to a restaurant etc.

I realise my immunity won't last forever but I'll get a booster and to be honest, I feel that even if I got it again I would hopefullyget a milder dose.

FlatteredFool · 19/09/2021 10:03

A few more have tested positive today from ds's class. I think we are up to half the school positive now.

We've had a case in dc's primary class so that's been scary. I'm immunosuppressed and the vaccine has only minimally worked. My 15 year old has had the first jab.
I wonder how long it will be until this thread is derailed by posts asking what we did in previous years or telling us we have to learn to live with it?
On the positive side, it was good news to hear they've authorised an antibody treatment for vulnerable groups.

Tinydancer321 · 19/09/2021 11:29

@PastMyBestBeforeDateyour so right. Sick of people seeing us as the issue. Like how dare we worry!

FlatteredFool · 19/09/2021 12:43

Any de-railers can FO. I have PMT on top of whatever virus I have got and am just not in the mood for their nonsense.

Just bumping this one to add the 'Why don't you homeschool?' posters to the list of derailers.

FlatteredFool · 22/09/2021 21:38

Grin yes because that's the solution of course!
Ds went back to school today. There's still lots off with covid and colds. Lots of oh he was pale and sneezing and coughing a bit but no temperature so I sent him in 🤦‍♀️ Yes, thanks, your son is probably spreading covid round reception now. Considering most are asymptomatic then surely you'd test for a cough.

TheRainbow · 23/09/2021 21:36

At the school where I work, three quarters of each class I cover in have coughs, sneezes, runny noses and some look really run down and tired - it could be a cold/flu virus doing its rounds, yet it could be covid, but they're not being tested. I'm cev and have two primary age children. When my children had a temperature, cough and were bunged up, I didn't send them in to their school and they had pcrs (which were negative thankfully). Feel resentful that other parents don't do the same. Finding it hard at the moment. Hopefully things will improve soon. I keep trying to be positive!

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 23/09/2021 21:58

I hope it is just colds for both your sakes.

TheRainbow · 23/09/2021 22:03

Thanks. I really have to pretend covid doesn't exist in order to get to work 😕

That's good news re. the antibody treatment.
VictoriaBun · 23/09/2021 22:14

My dh is / was / whatever cev and we both pretty much shielded 100% until we were both double jabbed, I am his carer . We still wear masks , socially distance as much as possible as neither of us really want to take the risk of it just being a ' cold ' .

Senso21 · 23/09/2021 22:16

F

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 23/09/2021 22:29

It is Izzy. Cuts the death rate by 20% and reduces time in hospital. It's scary enough sending one dc into school but teaching 30 of the little darlings is another matters.

QuarantineQueen · 24/09/2021 07:03

Is anyone able to book their booster yet?

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 24/09/2021 07:45

I've got mine this weekend I think. The booking confirmation says covìd but the text with the link to book from the GP says flu Confused. I've got an NHS invitation as well which is definitely covid.

Frostine · 24/09/2021 13:15

I think they are strictly sticking to post 6 months after last covid vaccination.

QuarantineQueen · 24/09/2021 13:55

I'm a bit worried as it is over 6 months since my second dose, I'm a CEV teacher in a school which has outbreaks in every year group and I've heard nothing and I'm not eligible to book through the online system.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 24/09/2021 13:59

I only heard in the middle of this week.

FlatteredFool · 05/10/2021 12:15

My Dd has just tested positive and as a single parent I'm now worried I'll get it and I'm already ill with some virus.

OP posts:
nether · 05/10/2021 14:00

CEV person in my household is eligible for third primary (so booster idc would be their fourth).

But still no notification.

It's been a major fuck up, as people who are less vulnerable are already being done
