I feel terrible (not Covid) so how bad will Covid be….!!!

I went for a test as I developed a cough, hot dry throat, runny nose, feeling very achy, fatigued.
Last night I had a raised temp (37.4 but for my that is raised)

Results have come through this morning as negative.

I’m guessing I have a cold, but I don’t ever remember feeling this terrible with just a cold before.

It’s making me wonder just how bad Covid is going to be if/when I do get it.

DS tested positive last month but the rest of us managed to avoid it!

This is a really odd question. Covid is by far not the worst bug out there for the majority of people. You've presumably been vaccinated against it. Due to the lockdowns and thus reduced contacts, everyone is likely to more vulnerable to other bugs and viruses that you haven't encountered in a while, which mutate just as covid does. Hope you're better soon.

BG2015 · 05/09/2021 07:42

I've had this cold since Tuesday - caught it off DS18 who had it the week before.

My DP woke up with it yesterday.

It's one of the worst colds I've ever had. I was convinced it was covid but so far tests are negative.

I have a terrible headache, even my eyeballs hurt. Sore throat, mucousy cough, aching all over.

No temperature and I've still got my taste and smell.

I feel slightly better today but the cough is the worst.

HungryHippo11 · 05/09/2021 07:45

I've had bad colds and not so bad colds. Having a bad cold isn't an indicator that you would have severe covid symptoms, they're totally independent. I've had heavy colds before and felt dreadful but was asymptomatic with covid. Why would one cause the other?

Fubitch · 05/09/2021 07:45

PCRs?

WillaWeatherspoon · 05/09/2021 07:46

There are some nasty colds doing the rounds, worse than normal I think. I never usually get them (last time I had one was 2012) but after getting covid in July I've had two colds since and they were both grim. Covid was much worse though!

HoollyWugger · 05/09/2021 07:48

I was reading another thread last night where a poster kept getting negative PCRs for days, despite feeling like shit, and everyone else in the house getting positive results. Eventually she did get a positive PCR result - I guess sometimes you just have to keep on testing 🤷🏻‍♀️

Mybalconyiscracking · 05/09/2021 07:49

Well I had a bit of an upset tummy for two days followed by a thickly throat for a week or so. Worked from home right through.
I have had some terrible colds in my time though.
I assume you have had the good sense to get yourself vaccinated?

FreeBritnee · 05/09/2021 07:50

It was a nasty cold that convinced me to have the vaccine when I was putting it off. I felt terrible!! Hope you’re feeling better soon xx

@Mybalconyiscracking

Do you mean with Covid?

I’ve had those symptoms too, but PCR is negative!!

@Fubitch The OP said she went for a test yesterday and the results came through as negative which suggests she had a PCR as well.

Fubitch · 05/09/2021 08:00

I think I'm mixing my threads up!

TheDailyCarbunkle · 05/09/2021 08:05

Like many millions of people around the world you could get covid and not even know it, or have such mild symptoms that you barely notice.

I must start a thread to ask why people are fixated on believing that they will be terribly ill with covid, or die from it, when every single shred of evidence we have says that that is unlikely for most people.

FlyingFlamingo · 05/09/2021 08:09

I’ve had Covid, yes it wasn’t fun and games and it took me about 4 weeks to fully recover but I have felt much worse when ill with other viruses before. I had it in December before being offered a vaccine as well, I assume that if I got it now I’m vaccinated it wouldn’t be so bad. Although I spent a lot of time on the sofa I could get up and see to the children, I can remember being ill with a different virus when dd2 was a baby and feeling so ill that I spent the days lying on the floor whilst she lay on a playmat, and crying when she woke in the night for a feed because it meant I had to get up. Covid was nothing like that!

Sleepinghyena · 05/09/2021 08:12

@TheDailyCarbunkle
Maybe because some of us know someone that has died of covid or been extremely ill or experienced long covid and been poorly for months with it. Maybe that's why some people are worried... Maybe you could just be kind instead of posting sarcastic superior replies.

rookiemere · 05/09/2021 08:13

I've had the same bug as you OP ( negative PCR and numerous negative LFTs). Funnily enough I remember having a similar bug in Sep 19 which knocked me out for a few weeks.
Take it easy and do not push yourself for the next few weeks until you are entirely well.
I had what I think was Covid in March 2020 ( no tests then) and it wasn't dissimilar in terms of how long I felt unwell for. Again not pushing yourself until fully better is the key.

@rookiemere

I feel completely lacking in energy.

I’ve managed to leave my bed to make a cup of tea and feel like I need a sleep again! 😩

Think DH will be on DC duty today!!

Other viruses are available.

I don’t think I’ve had covid but I did have flu years ago and that was horrific, it put DD2 in the hospital. Think we need to stop matching everything to covid.

SweetBabyCheeses99 · 05/09/2021 08:25

I hate to break it to you OP but there are plenty of other respiratory viruses other than SARS-CoV2 and “a cold”!

Influenza virus, respiratory syncytial virus, parainfluenza viruses, metapneumovirus, rhinovirus, coronaviruses, adenoviruses, and bocaviruses - and there are multiple strains of each (note a strain not a variant - former is a much larger difference).

SARS-Cov2 is new, it’s potentially been manufactured, poses a disproportionate risk if you’re elderly - but it’s major defining factor is that we keep testing everyone for it! Has anyone ever offered you a test for any of these other viruses at the first sign of a sniffle?! Has anyone’s Doctor ever offered them any testing or treatment for any of these viruses? Of course not, you need to stop living in fear.

Porcupineintherough · 05/09/2021 08:33

If you are vaccinated OP I'd try not to worry about it.

Ive had COVID twice (prevaccine). The first time it was by far the worst illness I've ever had (worse than typhoid even). Dh had it at the same time and honestly he's had worse colds.

The second time I had it, which I guess is more like having it after vaccination, it was like a bad cold.

tinydancer88 · 05/09/2021 08:37

I've had Covid and in my experience it was no match for tonsillitis, which wiped me out totally for 2 weeks and I didn't feel right for a month after.

I know someone who died from the coldsore virus and another who died from a kidney infection. I don't believe it's likely I will die from either of those things.

The fact that people die from infections doesn't mean it's impossible to look at the actual facts around something and understand the real risk.

HopelesslyOptimistic · 05/09/2021 08:47

Sounds very much like Covid to me. Don't think because your test is negative you don't have it. I tested multiple times, all negative, and then tested positive on day 15 from my first symptoms date. We are all different mind, I just knew I had it.

underneaththeash · 05/09/2021 08:49

I've got that bug too....and my PCR is negative (so was DH's).

It's just.a virus.

FfrothiCoffi · 05/09/2021 08:51

How bad you feel with a cold has no bearing on how bad Covid will be for you.
I have had Covid. I have had far worse colds. Of course that’s not to say it’s the same for everyone, but there really is no correlation.
