Holidays & travel 2022

Do you think the hoops to jump through to travel, will be relaxed next year? I have enjoyed holidaying in the uk for the past 2 years, but really don’t think I want to do it yet again next year. Wondering if people will just go abroad come what may, given it’ll be the third year of the pandemic by then.

I really bloody hope so so that i can have my peacefull uk holidays back without the hoiked up prices

Chillychangchoo · 30/08/2021 10:20

Not sure, I’ve got Majorca booked for May half term but I can’t see the hoops being relaxed to be honest and a part of me wishes I never booked it, but then these hoops might be here forever more now.

It will be our first time abroad as a family and my son will be 12. I didn’t want to wait another year.

We will see.

CeeJay81 · 30/08/2021 10:26

I hope so too but I can't see it. Booked for may and just hoping but if we have to test or whatever then will just have to put up with it. Just don't want restrictions while on holiday.

newnortherner111 · 30/08/2021 14:48

I think it's how the UK is seen that may be the determining factor, so I would not be sure.

IcedPurple · 30/08/2021 15:19

The only answer is that nobody knows. I very much hope travel will be back to normal by then, as it's important to my liveliehood, but none of us really has a clue. Not a very satisfactory answer, I know, but that is the reality of it.

CarlaH · 30/08/2021 15:23

I don't mind about testing to go because if I am positive I can just go home again but concerned about testing to return. What if you are positive what happens then.

BunsyGirl · 30/08/2021 17:02

Just been to Malta and it really wasn’t a massive hassle. Only negative is the cost of the tests. Will definitely be travelling abroad again next year. Want to go to the US but will travel to Europe again in the US border is still closed to U.K. citizens.

Thewiseoneincognito · 30/08/2021 22:22

I think we’re in for a rude awakening as we enter autumn and people start to realise face masks will be back and restrictions are reinstated.

Normalised international travel won’t be a thing for the next few years, at least. That’s just the outlook without another variant in the mix.

Katie517 · 30/08/2021 22:27

@Thewiseoneincognito will we have this rude awakening every autumn forever more then? As covid isn’t going anywhere. Normalized international travel is happening in the US and across Europe (for vaccinated people) it’s only here where we are paying through the nose for pointless tests and putting up with nonsensical traffic light systems.

Thewiseoneincognito · 30/08/2021 22:36

@Katie517 I suppose only time will tell? We can’t wish it away which is what the government and a large swathe of the population seem to be doing right now. The country needs to accept some ongoing effort from us is required if we’re to get out of this dilemma otherwise it’s rinse and repeat regardless of how sick and tired of it we are.

Katie517 · 30/08/2021 22:47

@Thewiseoneincognito it’s not feasible to continue with restrictions with no end point, vaccinations were supposed to be that end point after which we have to live with it like we do flu, there is no “getting out of it” it will be around forever. So if there are restrictions this autumn there will be every autumn as the situation will be no different this time next year, hence why we have to live with it.

NannyAndJohn · 30/08/2021 23:23

No.

We'll still be in the never-ending cycle of cases rise > government dithers > deaths rise > last minute Lockdown > come out of Lockdown too early > cases rise > ......

Even if other countries get things under control, they'll (rightly) see as as too high-risk.

Katie517 · 30/08/2021 23:39

@NannyAndJohn when do you suggest we come out of lockdown? When there are no businesses left, children have lost years of education and their childhoods and everyone’s mental health is completely destroyed? Would that be long enough for you? But even then the cases would crawl back up again so maybe we live in lockdown forever would that suit you?

HairyFloppins · 30/08/2021 23:44

Bloody hell these last few comments are depressing.

Travel will return. Hopefully it will be better next year. After all loads have been to Spain and back multiple times during our lockdowns.

As I said, it’s a case of wait and see. You may believe vaccinations are the ‘end point’ but they’re not even close, the virus is still circulating, waiting for it’s opportunity. This winter we will discover whether ‘living with Covid’ is possible and what that truly looks like in terms of the impact to our day to day lives.

Pinkchocolate · 30/08/2021 23:46

I will be travelling abroad next year. I’ve missed out on holidays for two years so next year I’d be willing to jump through a few hoops if needed. I’d be devastated with another summer in the UK.

AlandAnna · 31/08/2021 06:47

People cannot be kept from their families indefinitely. It’s a global disease, it’s time we were allowed to see our loved ones. I do not want to wait for a funeral to be allowed to travel.

IsabellesMissingSock · 31/08/2021 06:50

I really hope so. I've been on several holidays abroad this summer and last, to Turkey, Mallorca and Greece (where I am right now) which have been great, but I want to get back to going to more far-flung places soon.

IsabellesMissingSock · 31/08/2021 06:51

By the way - the paperwork and tests etc. really aren't that much extra hassle. Anyone feeling put off by that should not let it stop them. Once you've done it once, it's fine...

MsTSwift · 31/08/2021 07:01

We have teens and the fear of one testing positive while we were away was what stopped us traveling. Lots of teens we know tested positive this summer so it wasn’t a remote risk. We had an ok time but a uk summer holiday not a patch on going abroad. Too bloody cold and same culture.

BoomChicka · 31/08/2021 07:51

I've been on holiday last summer and this summer, there is extra admin, but it's not prohibitively expensive now if you are vaccinated. Obviously with a few children it gets very expensive though!

HelloMissus · 31/08/2021 08:24

Going away in a few days and honestly, it’s all no worse than getting visas.
You upload your vaccine thing online.
You book tests (one for just before you fly back), one for when you’re home.
That’s it.

HelloMissus · 31/08/2021 08:24

The tests are a bit of a rip off tho.
They’re pretty much just those free ones you can get in the chemists.

IcedPurple · 31/08/2021 08:26

For me it's not so much the 'hassle' as the fear of testing positive and then not being able to get on the plane. That's the kind of worry that would hang over me for the entire holiday.
vaxmeup · 31/08/2021 08:33

One thing to watch is expiry of vaccine certs. Austria are already putting a 270 day (since second dose) expiry on vaccines. If other countries follow suit, and the UK does not offer boosters to everyone, it will be even more difficult to travel than this year. I'm going away this year (hopefully) in case it's not possible in 2022!
