Schools contingency framework released

The contingency framework guidelines for childcare settings, schools, colleges and universities has been released.

Not much to see except that schools should seek public health advice if:

For most education and childcare settings, whichever of these thresholds is reached first:
• 5 children, pupils, students or staff, who are likely to have mixed closely, test positive for COVID-19 within a 10-day period; or
• 10% of children, pupils, students or staff who are likely to have mixed closely test positive for COVID-19 within a 10-day period

Additional measures might be onsite testing or reintroducing masks but is much more likely to be simply:

At the point of reaching a threshold, education and childcare settings should review and reinforce the testing, hygiene and ventilation measures they already have in place. Settings should also consider:
• whether any activities could take place outdoors, including exercise, assemblies, or classes
• ways to improve ventilation indoors, where this would not significantly impact thermal comfort
• one-off enhanced cleaning focussing on touch points and any shared equipment

Interestingly, 'mixing closely' includes students who have shared a classroom, not just those who sat within 2m of a positive case.

No reassurance for CEV pupils.

My sons bubble had 11 cases last term

Which resulted in the bubble self isolating 20 days.
Also parents and siblings catching covid also some double jabbed..
This was year 5/6 bubble of 60 kids and least 5 adults.

Eldest year group year 10 was shut down by phe after 8 cases.
Year 7 was shut down with similar amount cases.
A whole entire local secondary school was shut down with 33 cases mix pupils and staff twice June/July.
The school his service was axed from our area so multiple i would say least 20kids travel to eldest school using public transport from all areas of the city most if secondary school within city centre have kids travelling a distance using public transport bus or local train..

Wonder what unions will say?

Does anyone know effect co2 monitors as if they cheap enough I would gladly donate some to my sons primary school or daughters nursery.

My 2 senior age kids thats more tricky.
They are in different sets different subject so class is never really the same other than tutor .
Some classroom are in old block some new.

Bristol schools were heavily hit last term.
I'm dreading autumn winter .

I’m sure there will be some posters who will blame teachers if their children get sick

Absolutely. Everything is the teachers' fault now.

I'll be teaching across 15 classes in a primary school with tiny classrooms. Interested to see how this plays out.

Do you have a magic line on the floor? I hear that's the best way to stop Covid. No idea how it works, but hey schools are magical places where a wet paper towel can fix any and all ailments, so therefore a magic line makes sense... Grin
Waveafterwaveslowlydrifting · 17/08/2021 21:38

Haw haw. I teach infants who like to breathe in each other's faces, lick the desk, paw at me for attention etc. Fun times 😆

I occasionally teach in a room with a CO2 monitor (science, it cuts off the gas and alarms if carbon dioxide gets too high - I think it was fitted because of the Bunsen burners). Unfortunately it often goes off, even with some of the windows open, during a lesson even when we aren't using the Bunsen burners. You have to stand and use the door as a fan to help improve the circulation to get it to shut up Grin you can't really teach whilst doing this so although the alarm tells me the ventilation is poor it doesn't actually fix anything...

TheHoneyBadger · 17/08/2021 21:47

I believe even the magic tape has been removed now.

Yes, plenty of double jabbed people still getting covid so staffing may get interesting, quickly again.

MrsHamlet · 17/08/2021 21:50

Our magic tape has gone. We probably ought to get some more.

noblegiraffe · 17/08/2021 21:53

We never had magic tape because the kids were always closer than 2m and that would have made it obvious.

But there is no suggestion that staff, should be keeping distance anymore.

Our magic tape was faulty - I still caught covid...
Ugzbugz · 17/08/2021 21:54

My DS is being delayed a week to gonback to do the LFT TEST in school. Why is the dumb government asking this when it can be done at home?

Yet I take my son out of school for a day or week and I've destroyed his education.

I can't see things ever or for a long time being normal so is there plans to cancel next year's exams etc?

User3456 · 17/08/2021 21:55

Autumn term is going to be an absolute disaster covid wise in schools.

Hercisback · 17/08/2021 21:55

@Ugzbugz LFT shouldn't be delaying return dates. They're doing them in school to ensure they are done. Home take up is low.

TheHoneyBadger · 17/08/2021 21:57

LFT is causing staggered starts which means delayed start for most year groups (including my son's) at my school.

MrsHamlet · 17/08/2021 21:59

And mine.

@FlagsFiend your school should ask for a refund on the magic tape.

FlagsFiend · 17/08/2021 22:00

@ugzbugz the government didn't have a contingency plan for cancelling exams last year, it was a sudden decision in January with no thought as to what to do instead. Expect any decisions on exams to be last minute... They should go ahead, but ideally need some adaptations due to the last couple of years. Ideally we (as in schools and teachers) need to know the plan in September so we can prepare our y11 and y13 students appropriately. However I'd be pretty surprised if we do have a plan in September...

Ugzbugz · 17/08/2021 22:01
@Ugzbugz LFT shouldn't be delaying return dates. They're doing them in school to ensure they are done. Home take up is low.
But as before many parents didn't agree to it and we was trusted to do it at home.

What is the point in doing one test in school? Then the rest of winter home testing?

My son was supposed to start 2 Sept its now 7th to get all years in for a test they can do at home which is exactky what i will be doing.

Why all mingle in school to do a test with potential positive cases. Absolutely sheer stupidity and if anyone dares tell me I can't take my son out of school ever again I think will flip.

We didn't have magic tape in my school either since the classrooms aren't big enough for teachers to be more than 50cm away from the front row.
Hercisback · 17/08/2021 22:05

SLT said guidance said no staggered starts for testing... They probably lied.
Ours are being done on inset days.

BeautifulTulips · 17/08/2021 22:07

Are secondary schools testing pupils before they return? Haven't heard anything from my child school and they are due back next week!

I am no way baling schools or expecting expecting to have a magic solution but if closing etc and bubbles continues, exams aren't practice but then again how an entire education is based on one exam is beyond me so maybe it would be good to lose them and base on what we've done the last 2 years Confused

DanglingMod · 17/08/2021 22:09

@Hercisback

SLT said guidance said no staggered starts for testing... They probably lied. Ours are being done on inset days.
Then they are, or didn't read it. It always said since they announced it that a staggered start for the first week of term could be used for the two tests.
Hercisback · 17/08/2021 22:11

They definitely lied then.

Students are then in school anyway for the second one at our place.

JanglyBeads · 17/08/2021 22:28

@beautifultulips you definitely should have heard because they need to ask permission from those who didn’t give it in March, for a start

noblegiraffe · 17/08/2021 22:31

What is the point in doing one test in school? Then the rest of winter home testing?

Better take-up of testing when it's in school, supervised. It should be 2 tests in school.

They're only supposed to do home tests till the end of September, when testing will be reviewed.

I think they could have done with rewriting it to make it make sense!

An idea that would be anathema to them and probably bring them out in hives.
