@fiveminustwocats

Thank goodness for Mumsnetters here to point stuff out for us.

Indeed, how on earth would we manage without them Wink Interesting that they know so much about our parliament and politicians too. I don't think many in the UK actually know very much about NZ at all, given some of the rubbish I've read on MN.

Go read your own NZ superior forum then.
MarshaBradyo · 19/08/2021 10:17

You can moan about colonialists without realising the irony that it is you that has colonised.

That way you can keep structures as they are and make zero changes. Just blame people hundreds of years ago.

Bra when you resort to personal attack it’s clear you have nothing reasonable to say

LimeRedBanana · 19/08/2021 11:00

@sashagabadon

Maybe I should have said “recommend” rather than “suggest” China has had a similar structure for what 2000 years maybe longer so it clearly works very well for them. Anyway apologies derail again.
The Chinese Communist Revolution was in the 1940s.

And I think there are a fair few people there who’d disagree that ‘it works very well’. Human rights atrocities, and all that.

If it’s all the same with you, the Chinese model of government / communism isn’t really something we’re going to seriously put on the table for discussion here in NZ.

Thanks for thinking of us, though.

Back to COVID - I had my first vaccination today, after going online to book yesterday. Pretty busy down there, in alert level 4, with everyone socially distanced. Looks like my 12YO is now also eligible, so good news.

That’s amazing news, they must really be very rapidly expanding capacity now. It’s only a couple of weeks ago that my sister became eligible at 61, and actually when she first logged on to book the earliest appointment was mid September, although that did improve and she had hers last week.

stclair · 19/08/2021 17:02

@LimeRedBanana Nothing like a bit of Covid to create some urgency is there? I wish my parents would do the same.

amicissimma · 19/08/2021 22:08

Thanks for the Guardian info, @Kingstonmumof1.

SueblueNZ · 19/08/2021 22:28

@Terhou
Had you read my entire post you'd have seen I was not ignoring the MIQ debacle. How do I know why it has been/is being so poorly managed?! It's not my place to defend the situation. I just know it is a total travesty.

PicsInRed · 19/08/2021 23:46

Covid reportedly in Wellington.

fiveminustwocats · 19/08/2021 23:48

Yeh yeh thanks for reading my posts.

MarshaBradyo - I never said I read all your posts, just that there are an awful lot of them!! I've too many other things to occupy my time with.

FiveShelties · 20/08/2021 04:22

Kiwis returning don't pay for MIQ, only those coming for short times. But getting a space can take months and is a source of frustration for those stuck overseas

If you left NZ after August 2020 you do pay for MIQ, so if I could get a slot to enable me to return to NZ after visiting my Mum in UK then the bill is around 1800GBP.

I am reluctant to fly without a voucher to return as it could take months and months to be able to return to NZ.

@MarshaBradyo is one of the most prolific MNers - hundreds of posts a week I expect. I have no idea where she finds the time! I assume she doesn’t have children to look after. But she speaks a lot of sense. You couldn’t find a wiser or more compassionate poster.
Pootle40 · 20/08/2021 07:15

It's going to get a whole lot worse before it gets better.

Turangawaewae · 20/08/2021 07:21

@fiveshelties Sorry, I didn't know it had changed. I'm in the same boat. I couldn't go and see my parents without knowing I could get back. I couldn't risk my job and wouldn't want to be away from DC. I'm very glad they will get their vaccine with me in mid sept.

A previous poster asked why we don't just increase capacity. I'd like to see this too but it does come with increased risk. It's also complicated and labour intensive and mistakes lead to lockdowns like our current one.

The hotels need the right ventilation systems, areas need to be able to be closed off from the public, including an outside area. Food 3x a day must be provided, all in disposable containers that create risky rubbish. We need nurses to do daily checks, the army to stop people climbing out of windows, drivers to transport people around. People are housed in cohorts based on arrival. This is so someone at the end of their stay isn't housed next to a new arrival who could infect them just before they head out into the community.

Turangawaewae · 20/08/2021 07:24

Oh, and when this all ends, the hotel will need a rebrand. I don't see anyone from NZ booking the Jet Park at Auckland airport!

MarshaBradyo · 20/08/2021 07:24

Property that’s nice to hear thanks.

I don’t bother with other SM / media so maybe helps idk. My holidays have been fairly packed with stuff, which has cost a fortune, I think I can just fit lots of stuff in.

But this year has been a shitshow and some posters I’ve appreciated - and pp is one of them so I usually don’t say something like that when people take the mic but decided to.

Anyway nice to read and better than the message before which I’ll skip over now ;

TheGenealogist · 20/08/2021 07:25

Interested in the quarantine thing, @FiveShelties.

So say you did want to leave NZ for any reason and travel to the UK or another European country. A New Zealander arrives and their passport is stamped for 90 days entry.

If you then have to arrange your quarantine and you can't get a slot to return for 110 days or something, what are you supposed to do? Stay on illegally in the country you have travelled to and risk never being allowed back in? Or fly anyway and risk the wrath of the NZ authorities when you arrive? Will they even let you book return flights?

It's very draconian and I can see the hoops and restrictions are designed to deter travel. But for people who have to travel it's very hard. The NZ airline industry must be on its knees.

Has capacity been reduced though? Family of mine who had been living in the UK went back before Christmas last year and whilst there was a lot of messing around with flights being cancelled/changed, and arranging testing to align, being able to get an MIQ slot wasn’t ever a concern.

RedToothBrush · 20/08/2021 08:13

Re capacity at MIQ, its also interesting how covid positive cases are being handled for similar reasons.

This from the NZ Herald:
This brings the total number of cases associated with the current Auckland community outbreak to 31.

All cases have or are being transferred safely to a managed isolation facility, under strict infection prevention and control procedures, including the use of full PPE.

This begs questions of how many cases NZ can identify and isolate in facilities before it has issues, if there is an MIQ capacity problem.

With news that there are cases in Wellington, and a cases where there are potentially 1000 contacts, yesterday's more optimistic tones may not last long.

I do wonder if luck (and yes luck does play a role at this point) is running out.

I have read many wise posts on MN, but they haven't been written by that particular MNer. It seems to me more that they are addicted to posting than that they have much worthwhile to say. We shall agree to differ.[/quote]
And it seems to me you are weirdly obsessed with my posts.

Just skip past I don’t care.

I find you very unpleasant and your posts completely pointless so just avoid me and I will you.

I’ll be happier and maybe you will be too and stop trying to be so nasty.

I have no idea why you are so focussed on me but hey ho. There’s all types on even obsessive ones like you.
