I’m struggling to get mine to have it.

Yes, my 16 year olds had her first jab last week.

She is terrified of needles (has panic attacks and faints!), but she also recognised that it was the right thing to do. We talked about the positives of being vaccinated in terms of holidays, festivals, large gatherings, school etc.

It took 10 minutes with her crying, over breathing and panicking before she would let it be done.

Her reaction afterwards? 'I didn't even feel it!' 😀😬

UserStillatLarge · 14/08/2021 11:01

If you talk about it using phrases like "having you done" that might be the problem? A 16/17 year old is nearly a legal adult with a mind of their own and should be treated as such Hmm

We've constructively discussed the merits and otherwise of being vaccinated and that the main benefits for a teen are that it protects others. He has accepted that and is thinking about it (he has grandparents that are vulnerable to understands the benefits at a personal level). Not being offered locally yet though.

Was she ok after ?
Mine is worried about being ill after, because I was after my AZ

Yes at a drop in
Mine were keen to have it done so no pressure from me.

Are you struggling to find somewhere or are they refusing?

GoodnightGrandma · 14/08/2021 11:02

He’s scared of needles, and of being ill after, but is happy in principle to have the vaccine.

It’s difficult to predict how they’ll react. My 75 year old mum thought they’d given her a dummy one because she didn’t feel anything. My dad felt a bit rough for a couple of days. My DCs both had a sore arm but otherwise ok.

All with Pfizer.

MeredithGreyishblue · 14/08/2021 11:06

They won't give them AZ at that age so not the same.
You're still here so maybe point that out.

From what I can see 17yo aren't getting many side effects.

TheVolturi · 14/08/2021 11:06

Had them done 🙄 isn't it their choice?

Benjispruce5 · 14/08/2021 11:08

How did you get it? My 17.5 yr old wants it but online says wait to be contacted.

DrunkenUnicorn · 14/08/2021 11:08

Yup, my 17 year old (almost 18) had his done a few weeks ago.

I got a text invitation and asked if what he thought/if he wanted to. He seemed to think it was a good idea. We discussed things like protecting others, possibilities of health passports or similar and his desire to get out a bit more socially etc which seemed to confirm his initial thoughts and so he booked himself in a few days later.

He was a bit tired that evening, but that was it.

My GP surgery has a walk in centre in conjunction with other surgeries.

Mine has been jabbed now, we have a walk-in clinic locally which was brilliant.

Yes it’s their choice, it’s just a turn of phrase 🙄

Had them done? Like getting them neutered? As if they were a dog?

Loads of places round here doing drop ins. Find a Pfizer on and give them a ring.
NannyR · 14/08/2021 11:12

We have a walk in "grabajab" clinic in the city centre shopping mall, I noticed yesterday that there were big signs in front saying 16+ now eligible, just walk in.

GoodnightGrandma · 14/08/2021 11:13

As the fuckwits are around today I shall leave.
Thanks to all of you who answered the question asked.

Benjispruce5 · 14/08/2021 11:15

Thanks I’ll have a look for a walk-in so I can get her done. Don’t people get in a tiz about a word? Grin

MotionActivatedDog · 14/08/2021 11:15

Fuckwits?? Shock

HerMammy · 14/08/2021 11:16

My DD was 16 two weeks ago and booked it herself and has appointment on Tuesday.

Lupinhere37 · 14/08/2021 11:17

My 17 yr old had her’s this week. Was nervous just before going in and was visibly shaking but determined to have it. She also was worried about feeling ill after. She doesn’t like needles too much but will tolerate vaccines without a fuss.
One of the co-ordinators noticed she was shaky, pulled her out of the queue and took her to a cubicle. She was offered a “chat” with a doctor but she declined and said to just jab her. She felt nothing and insisted on going to the supermarket for snacks straight after.
Following two days went on a day trip and was totally fine, with no after effects. On day four now and it’s not been mentioned. She’s quite a complainer, so it honestly would have been mentioned if she wasn’t feeling well!
I think your DC will be fine; anecdotally hearing that nervous teenagers have had brilliant care at the centres. Also, haven’t known of any locally who have had after effects. It’s all Pfizer around here apparently. My DD had Pfizer.

kimlo · 14/08/2021 11:22

dd1 went to a local walk in. We had heard that side effects can be worse if you have already had covid, but she was fine sore arm and slight headache. much better than I was after my first az.

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 14/08/2021 11:32

Took my 16yo. He knows he is at higher risk of autoimmune diseases (family/genetic) which can be triggered by a bad virus, and also knows of the astonishingly high numbers of children in his school who’ve developed Type 1 diabetes in the last 18 months. So he was happy to get jabbed.
Our local city vaccination hub was advertising walk-ins for 16+. It was a fairly short queue - all youngsters with their mums!

BarefootHippieChick · 14/08/2021 11:36

We're waiting for a call from the gp but I noticed my nearest centre is now doing walk ins so I will probably suggest to my 17 year old we go there. She's happy to have it done, just very anxious about new situations so I will go with her if she prefers. Good to see someone just mentioned lots of other parents there with their teens!
