Anyone with a high BMI - are you back to normal “life”…

I’m 33 and I have a high BMI. Other than that I have no other health conditions.

Recently had a full set of bloods & a private medical check including my vitamin levels checked, and all was okay.

I’m fully vaccinated and I really want to book a holiday to the Canary Islands.

Obviously this will include sitting on a flight for nearly 4 hours which I know may put me at risk of Covid.

I’ve had an Invitation to a christening in a few
weeks (all indoors) and my mum wants us to go to the theatre, to see Heathers.

All of these things I would do without a second thought prior to Covid.

How cautious should I be because of my BMI?
It’s 40.1…

Ps - I have already reduced my BMI from 44 and am continuing to reduce, no fat shaming please :)

I'll eat out, go on a short bus ride, have booked theatre for later on in the year but I don't want to travel abroad yet.

My BMI is about 35 but I’m only in my early 30s and now double vaccinated so I don’t feel particularly at risk. Not to the extent it’s stopping me doing anything I want to do, anyway. The risk isn’t high enough to restrict my DD’s life and stop her doing things because of me. Might feel differently if I was fat and 53 but at fat and 33 I’m choosing to take a small risk and enjoy life.

@Lemons1571 You've practically halved in size!! If you turn sideways, do people struggle to see you? 😁 My goodness, you have done so amazingly well. Congratulations and well done for working so hard.

EssexLioness · 14/08/2021 07:03

Thanks @Earlydancing 😊 I still have 12lbs to lose but the weight is refusing to budge now. I am menopausal so that doesn’t help! But I’ve tried to switch my focus to getting fit and toning up, so hopefully the weight will follow

WouldBeGood · 14/08/2021 07:06

No recorded cases from planes, apparently, so I’d just go 😃

Similar BMI plus asthmatic here but have worked in a busy hospital throughout pandemic including Covid wards and have had no issues and not had Covid. Most of my team caught it but no one got particularly poorly fortunately.

Lemons1571 · 14/08/2021 07:37

Thank you @Earlydancing. It took ages before anyone noticed (not helped by lockdowns and not seeing anyone anyway), then suddenly I plummeted down the dress sizes. I do feel less scared of catching covid too.

Warhertisuff · 14/08/2021 07:43

Having a high BMI doesn't reduce your immune response, at least not to the extent that vaccines aren't effective against serious disease (please correct me if wrong), and at 33 your risk was low anyway despite your BMI pre-vaccine.

I think some people are acting like Covid continues to be a high risk to all CV and CEV people even post vaccine, when in reality the risk is focussed in a subset of those with CEV whose immune response is particularly poor due to their condition.

@Lemons1571

BMI 40 at the start of this. Now BMI 22. Lost the weight as a bit of a race against catching the virus. 4 others in the household who work in education/go to school, and I could see with the governments appalling mismanagement of covid in schools that we were sitting ducks.

Finally had covid on the house when I was BMI 24 or so, double jabbed, and didn’t catch it.

Well done. What an inspiration you will be to others.

I think PHE should have made the obesity risk much clearer tbh but everyone seems to get accused of 'fat shaming' if the increased risk is mentioned.

Getawaywithit · 14/08/2021 07:58

I am very overweight/obese and a teacher so have been in school since the start. I finally caught it at the end of term, just in time for holidays! Double-jabbed. I was very unwell but it was manageable, just the whole range of symptoms. Better by day 15 after the PCR test. I am cautious in all aspects of life other than at work where there is no choice. I would go to a wedding but I am not ready to go on a plane, nor to go to the theatre.
