DP has Covid - what chance do I have of swerving it?

DP tested positive on Sunday. We're both double vaxxed and his symptoms are fairly mild (he's just tired and has a sore throat). He's been sleeping in the spare room since he got the test results.

DD and I have been doing lateral flow tests every day and so far we're negative.

What are our chances of avoiding catching it? Has anyone got any experience of one member of the household catching it but others managing to avoid it? Please give me some hope!

DS ( 1 jab) got it, then I did ( double jabbed) DD (no jab ) didn't! Total lottery

FromEden · 10/08/2021 22:07

dh had it last week. So far dd and I are fine, 10 days in. He stayed in our room which has its own bathroom and I moved to the spare room.

Crunched · 10/08/2021 22:07

DD tested positive 3 days ago and is doing ok. So far DH and I are clear but I'm paranoid about any slight twinge or tickly throat moment.

marplemead · 10/08/2021 22:16

DH tested positive 2.5 weeks ago, and DD a week ago (both have no symptoms). I have had three negative PCR tests in that time. Other than sleeping in separate rooms and keeping windows/doors open more than usual, we haven't done anything differently. DH and I are double vaxxed - not sure if that would explain why I haven't caught it or maybe it's the lack of symptoms. Whatever the reason, I am very grateful not to have covid in the third trimester of my pregnancy.

My DH tested positive with mild symptoms (head ache, tiredness, blocked nose) weeks ago. We didn't change the way we lived and even were on holiday during part of that time (before we know), sharing a room/bed. Neither me or my 2 kids got it. Both of us adults are double jabbed.

lightattheendofthetunnel2021 · 10/08/2021 22:25

That should say 'before we knew he had it'. Essentially we did not change anything, didn't isolate from each other and DH didn't seem to spread it to either me nor my children (we tested negative on multiple occasions afterwards). We weren't too worried as we're double jabbed and not worried for the kids as they generally don't seem to be too affected.

sparklecrazy · 10/08/2021 22:30

3 out of 4 of us caught it. Me and the kids. DH never got it 🤷‍♀️

Maxtry · 10/08/2021 22:38

My 10yo and I got it mildly. Husband didn't. I'm hearing about lots of double vaxxed swerving it

AvaCallanach · 10/08/2021 22:45

My 11 year old brought it in, mid July, from school.
My 19 year old - who is autistic and spends 99 percent of his time in his room - played computer games with her for 45 min 3 days before she got symptoms. He caught it.
I caught it from nursing her.
At this point I told 14 year old DS to isolate as he was the only one negative in the house apart from double vacced DH.

My 14year old caught it on day 10 from one of us - probably me as I had to make food etc.

DH - also double vacced like me - slept in same bed and made no effort to distance but didn't get it, neither did 17 year old who had a previous variant back in March which he didn't spread at all.

mrsnoodle55 · 11/08/2021 07:54

My 9 year old had it recently. I did briefly consider trying to keep her 6 yr old sister at a reasonable distance but soon realised it would be pointless; none of us caught it. Both me and DH double jabbed, obv 6 year old isn’t. They literally breathed the same air, for days and days; I have no idea how her sister didn’t get it. Saying that, she has had so many colds/infections in the past maybe she’s got some innate immunity?

stayathomer · 11/08/2021 07:59

I had covid but dh and 4 kids didn't get it but we were so cautious, I stayed in room with ensuite or went outside and sat the other side of the garden, used spray on handles, they left food at room door, we chatted from me in bed them outside door and I had a roll of bags and everything I needed. We had to be vigilant and dh is on immunosuppressants and 2 of the kids have horrendous asthma. Hope it all works out op

ShowOfHands · 11/08/2021 08:03

The dc had it but dh and I didn't. However, ds only became symptomatic/tested positive 15 days after his sister. And he can only have caught it from her as we isolated for the entire time.

lubeybooby · 11/08/2021 08:07

My DD had prolonged contact with her bf while he had early 'cold' symptoms that turned out to be covid

he was double vaxed with AZ, she has only had one pfizer so far

she had a brief fever for 12 hours or so but all LFT's for a week and 2 PCR's were negative, me and DP also double AZ vaxed didn't catch it but we had fleeting contact with him unlike DD

In short, I don't know but you maybe have more of a chance than you think. We thought with how transmissable delta is, we'd all get it for sure. None did and it appears DD possibly even fought it off.

LouLou198 · 11/08/2021 08:22

DH tested positive, we immediately put the house into "zones" he would use certain areas downstairs, dc and I upstairs, and we used separate bathrooms. We still all managed to get it, although I believe people are at their most infectious before displaying symptoms.

BerylBreville · 11/08/2021 08:42

Teen Ds had it at the end of term. He had a sore throat from Tuesday, but kept testing negative on LFT until the Friday. As soon as he got the positive result he isolated to his room, using a separate bathroom and wearing a mask to go through the house to the garden. We kept all windows open and we didn't catch it.

CalmDownBoris72 · 11/08/2021 10:48

I didn’t catch it from my husband and 5 kids, we also slept in the same bed and went about life as normal, no isolation etc.

cls123 · 11/08/2021 12:02

Neither me or DH (both double vaxxed)caught the delta variant from our child...considering I catch anything and everything from my kids the vaccine is a resounding success for me!

WhereAreWeNow · 11/08/2021 12:55

It's incredible how many of you have experience of living with someone who's tested positive but haven't caught it yourselves.
I've got a bit of a sore throat today and DD has a cough and headache. Both testing negative on lateral flow. Have just done PCR and waiting for results....

Lineeyesoverhere · 11/08/2021 14:35

Fingers crossed it’s negative OP!

We’re in a similar situation. DH tested positive yesterday but myself and DC negative so far….
He’s banished to the spare room, separate bathroom, I’m anti bac crazy and doing some daddy playtime duties in the garden with a mask on.

I feel covid is coming to get me but in equal measure, if it does then at least he can get back to doing bath times etc as it’s only day 2 and I’m struggling (day 9 going solo as he was away with work all of last week which is where he got it!)

We all got it one after another. My husband was the first, and I was the last.

Maybe other people on the thread had original covid or alpha, which weren't as infectious as Delta is?

One of the kids was clearly ill with symptoms but still tested negative in the lateral flow/positive on the PCR.

breadwidow · 12/08/2021 06:44

Interesting thread, relevant for me at the mo as am currently swerving COVID despite son having it (he's had symptoms since early Monday, got him Pcr test yesterday morning and also did one myself, just got results - im negative and he's positive). Son not vaxxed as 9. Im double jabbed but DH who also is tested positive on LF yesterday so has pcr booked for this morning. He's got similar symptoms to son so im sure he has it. Daughter (6) is fine.

Im currently not sleeping in daughters room, the ill ones together in our bed. I've not socially distanced from son so far and sleeps next to him Sunday & Monday night (we were camping - came home early due to son being ill).

I'm hoping daughter and me can avoid as we meant to be going away next Saturday and would be bloody lovely not to have that trip scuppered too (that'll be over 10 days since onset of sons symptoms and after isolation rules change on the 16th). Our flat is quite small so don't think we can not be in same room as positive ones for 10 days but we can keep windows & doors open etc

WhereAreWeNow · 12/08/2021 08:02

Thanks all. Well DD tested positive (PCR) but I was negative even though I've got the same symptoms as her (sore throat and cough). I've just done another lateral flow and still negative. Not sure if I should go back and do another PCR test today given that I feel worse than I did yesterday and I'm living with 2 people who have tested positive?

DS(19) was double vaxxed and got it. We live in a small flat with one shared bathroom. DH, DD and I all dbl vaxxed. None of us caught it from him
