I'm booked for vaccine on Weds but I'm so scared!

I'm late 30s, haven't had a jab yet, I know, I know I should have. My family are all anti vax, they regularly send me videos and other shit which I don't even open now. I suffer from health anxiety and panic attacks so I've personally been very wary of getting the jab because I'm worried about long term effects of a new vaccine. Anyway I've now decided that the risk of covid is greater than the jab and that I should get it. I'm just really frightened about all the things they keep telling me about blood clots, stroke, dying! Unfortunately I'm not working, not really many friends so the only side I'm hearing is an antivax one. Just looking for reassurance really or from anyone with long term side effects from jab

OP I've had both vaccines and I'm absolutely fine. Tiredness and sore arm for a few days but now I'm back to normal.

Did you know that you're more like to get a bloody clot from birth control than the vaccine? Is is extremely rare - you will be fine. Well done for resisting your family's brainwashing techniques.

dementedpixie · 08/08/2021 20:40

You won't get AZ so less risk of blood clots
Don't know of there are long term effects from the jab compared to what you get with actual covid

LifesTooShortYOLO · 08/08/2021 20:43

Hi OP, I've had both jabs 33 and had Pfizer which you will likely have also.
I feel a lot happier now I'm double vaccinated although I know I can still catch Covid I hope now the risk is small of any major illness with it.
I too have health anxiety, and I agonised over the decision whether to have it but honestly I'm so glad I did. A sore arm for a day or so after and that's it. My DH did feel a bit rough the day after his so bare in mind it can affect people differently. He was back to his normal self after a day.

Di11y · 08/08/2021 20:44

There's constantly people in the news who were anti covid Vax getting covid and saying they wish they'd had the jab. Get it! You might feel a bit ropey after (or not) but that's just your body's antibodies not something you've put into your body.

Tippexy · 08/08/2021 20:45

Is this not your tenth thread on the matter?

FizziWater · 08/08/2021 20:47

Is there anyone you know who isn't anti vax and could go with you? I struggle to imagine what it must be like if everyone you know holds those views. What makes them like that?
On my local tv news tonight they had a feature about people who wanted the vaccine but were scared. Some very kind and reassuring staff, happy to help. One suggestion was to go to the vaccine centre beforehand and ask to look around. Tell them how nervous you are.
I had 2 doses my DH has, both my DC have and all my friends, I don’t know anyone who hasn't. The only side effects were a bit of a sore arm. One DC had a headache for a few hours, the other had the shivers. DS2 had AZ even though only 23 as it was before they changed the advice. He's fine and very happy to feel safer.

Thank you, yes it's the pfizer one, did anyone have their periods messed up, this is l one of my concerns. Also I'll be day 3 of my period and usually heavy and feel pretty shit, would it be better to wait or just get it done?

DoucheCanoe · 08/08/2021 20:49

I was in a similar position, my Mum was telling me about all the anti-vax conspiracies info which really pushed my medicated anxiety into over drive but I went through with it because after a lot of to and fro I realised that Covid was a much scarier prospect!

I work in social care within a 50 strong team, 47 of whom took up the vaccine and not one of us has had serious or unusual symptoms with a mix of AZ and Pfizer. Most reported for us was tiredness, a sore arm and a few sore heads but it all passed quickly.

You're doing the right thing :)

Blissbiz · 08/08/2021 20:50

@Tippexy no it isn't but even if it is what's it got to do with you?Hmm

OP posts:
Mintjulia · 08/08/2021 20:51

I've had both. No ill effects, not even a sore arm.
You'll be fine OP. Promise yourself something frivolous for afterwards. Luscious ice cream or whatever makes you happy Smile

Blissbiz · 08/08/2021 20:52

I think they are like that because a few of them have had covid and were fine so they think it's just a flu or a cold

I would just get it done.

I think you're brilliant to be going, I totally understand the worry if you've a lot of family who are opposed. You don't have to tell them you got the vaccine if it will save you from arguments.

You are correct that with cases so high your risk from covid is higher than any vaccine risks ( which exist but are tiny). Good luck Flowers

Bluntness100 · 08/08/2021 20:54

Gosh you should be excited not scared. You must read the media, see the anti vaxxers dying?

MrsSkylerWhite · 08/08/2021 20:55

Please don’t listen to your family, listen to data. You are at infinitesimal risk of clotting from the Pfizer vaccine.
You’ve made the right decision, for yourself and for others.

Lizzie523 · 08/08/2021 20:55

With the first one, my period was late by 6 days. No real change in the period itself. I only had the vaccine a week ago, so can't comment on that one yet.

ScribblingPixie · 08/08/2021 20:58

I can't stress enough the way the weight of the last 18 months slipped off my shoulders after my first then second vaccination. I barely give covid a thought now, though I follow sensible precautions. Nobody I know had an ill effects other than feeling a bit grotty the next day. Just because you're related to your family doesn't give them any special knowledge or insights. Listen to the experts, OP.

Slayduggee · 08/08/2021 21:08

With my first jab I had a sore arm. Pretty much everyone I know has been jabbed and the worst side effect anyone had was a headache (which was better when they took paracetamol)

On the other had I do know people who’ve had long term side effects from covid. On of my f30 something friends still cannot smell or taste anything 16 months after catching Covid and she was almost admitted to hospital during the first wave. My elderly neighbour died of covid and my neighbour 4 doors down had to call an ambulance a couple of weeks ago as he couldn’t breathe. He’s a healthy 30 something who was in the gym everyday. He’d had one jab and caught covid the week before he was due to have his second. It took him 3 weeks to get out of bed and he is still doesn’t feel normal.

Blissbiz · 08/08/2021 21:09

Thanks everyone, I feel like I really should have had it earlier, I'm not telling them I'm getting it, I might get one of those profile things on facebook saying I'm fully vaccinated Grin Obviously I'm an adult and make my own choices but it's just a bit difficult when it's antivax and it's poison, all about control...Confused

If you tell them you're nervous they are really kind and don't rush you etc
Slayduggee · 08/08/2021 21:11

My periods were like clockwork after both jabs and not lighter or heavier that normal either

Arsebucket · 08/08/2021 21:12

I was the same.

i’m 41. I was terrified.

Yesterday morning I just got in the car a drove to a walk in place. I would never have gone to an appointment, I’m just not like that. I would’ve built it up.

They gave me a choice of vaccines. I chose AZ as I’m more comfortable with that than Pfizer or moderna.

The only side effect I’ve had is a sore/heavy arm. But it’s waaaaaaaay less painful than the two week sore arm and huge lump that I got with the whooping cough vaccine in pregnancy.

MrsSkylerWhite · 08/08/2021 21:13

Several prominent US anti-vaxxers have passed away from Covid in recent weeks. Sadly, it will probably take more of such deaths before the message finally begins to get through to people who have been frightened/brainwashed by the anti-vaccine message.

You’re doing the right thing OP.

Rainbowqueeen · 08/08/2021 21:13

Good decision to get it OP.

You will be fine and it will be a good thing for your health anxiety to know that you are protected against covid. Did your relatives have it before the delta variant? Because that’s a whole different ball game

I'll be honest and say mine did after the first dose but it wasn't too bad. Just a bit late and a few more cramps than usual but I usually get cramps. I timed my second one for during my period so hopefully that will make a difference.
Potatoy · 08/08/2021 21:14

Try a walk in place if that helps?
