Non mask wearers

I’ve been generally observing in recent weeks since 19th July (and before too really) and the majority of people I see with no mask are men. I noticed for a while in the pandemic that in petrol stations it was men with no masks on, so got me noticing when I am out. Does this seem the same to you?
I am just interested, is this a general view or me being sexist (hope not). I wonder if men feel like they ‘look stupid’ in a mask so less likely to wear one?

I think the “British exceptionalism” thing is starting to be a British exceptionalism in itself

middleager · 07/08/2021 09:17

Most people by me don't wear masks now, including the shop assistants, both sexes - I'm in a minority.

Againstmachine · 07/08/2021 11:01

As said above, it is mandatory to wear them on public transport. They are not acting within the law if they don’t. Trouble is that some people are confused and think you can do as you like anywhere.

For the majority of public transport England it isn't mandatory to wear a mask on public transport, and neither is it a law.

Vintagevixen · 07/08/2021 11:04

Masks are mandatory of TFL services - mainly the underground and the buses in London.

Not mandatory but only "advised" on other transport networks - for various reasons I have been travelling on various southern rain networks this week and the buses in my local town without wearing one, and it has been very nice to travel without fogged up glasses or headaches I must say.

Lots of other people without too.

hamstersarse · 07/08/2021 11:05

I’m just amazed people are still wearing them at all.

Why are they?

I, friends and family are still wearing masks when in supermarkets, restaurants, public transport etc to protect those clinically vulnerable and possibly unable to be vaccinated (this includes one of my friends) and the under 18’s who are not yet vaccinated.

We’re not living in fear of Covid as some ridiculous posts comment on. As a family and our close friends we are vaccinated but trying to help protect others.
At work (we work hybrid, and have done pre Covid), masks remain in place in the office until 1 October to give everyone a chance to have both vaccinations.

Aren't you the clever one? I have a family member who can't be vaccinated. She has end-stage cancer. If she were to contract Covid from someone like you, it is very likely she wouldn't survive. I'm really annoyed with this flippant attitude.

I wear a mask to protect others and myself. I don't want your germs - thanks.

What's amazing about it? We have an infectious disease spread by droplets that are airborne. Mask wearing is common place in Far East countries who have dealt with SARs pandemic previously.

What is amazing is the government have left it up to people's common sense, as we all know many don't have any. Many have to be told exactly what to do then wang on about 'dictatorships' and 'stasis'.

In a pandemic, in crowded indoor spaces people should use them as many epidemiologists have said. Why wouldn't you hamster, why are you so very precious about it?

"common courtesy", to quote Chris Whitty?
essentialhealing · 07/08/2021 12:07

I've stopped wearing a mask, it's no longer a legal requirement

I'd say it's 50/50 men women young and old here

I've had both jabs and so have family. Time to start moving on with life

TertiusLydgate · 07/08/2021 12:09

I’d say it’s 50/50.

I haven’t worn one lately but my dh still wears his.

hamstersarse · 07/08/2021 12:10

Does common courtesy stop the minuscule airborne particles?

Parker231 · 07/08/2021 12:10

Scotland and Wales have the more sensible approach with masks.

Does common courtesy stop the minuscule airborne particles?
To quote Nature

"On 3 April, the CDC issued recommendations to use masks in areas where transmission rates are high. And evidence backs up those actions: a systematic review found ten studies of COVID-19 and related coronaviruses — predominantly in health-care settings — that together show that face masks do reduce the risk of infection11."

article here www.nature.com/articles/d41586-020-02058-1

study cited here www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(20)31142-9/fulltext

There is a strong emergent scientific consensus that masks are useful (indoors etc) especially if we wear them to help each other (keeping any infection to ourselves).

Which is why it's courteous to do so.

herecomesthsun · 07/08/2021 12:19

NB I give non-wearers the benefit of the doubt re exemptions especially as they are still a bit unusual (indoors etc) in places I go.

Not sciency then? Do you prefer holding your breath when you're a bit close to someone else? That could get tiresome on a long train ride.

SueSaid · 07/08/2021 12:27

Well, what next. Do you use a hanky when you sneeze because these do indeed reduce the spray of airborne particles to a degree. Reduce, not stop.

You should Google and get a better understanding of infectious disease and the spread. Perhaps you cba to wash your hands either?

hamstersarse · 07/08/2021 12:29

Mask dictators are really touchy aren’t they?

Parker231 · 07/08/2021 12:31

Who’s dictated that you should wear a mask? Some of us have just pointed out why we do.

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 07/08/2021 12:37

After what appears to be a lifetime over the past year and a half or so - I can’t fathom folks still questioning the functionality of surgical masks?! Masks as initially designed for your surgeon performing life changing operations and procedures on you as to not cross contaminate you in the process. So are some exceptionalism entitlement types really seriously that hard of thinking too? Just say sure masks and all other combined personal risk mitigation helps but I don’t care as that is the way I am. I am not a hero or particularly nice to otters. Or I am simply a fan of natural herd immunity and I hope others around me are not too medically vulnerable. It’s just a mask but when you see Tokyo Olympics 2020/1 currently - you will see how others take this pandemic seriously despite lower r rates! Not messy around feeling invincible as in England where perhaps for these types emergency criminal laws has to be reintroduced as common sense is sometimes not common at all sadly. Are you mixing and Covid tested accurately and constantly?

Againstmachine · 07/08/2021 12:51

That mask wearing in the far East is common place.

DameFanny · 07/08/2021 13:27

Why do you say that's untrue @Againstmachine? Back in march last year the only online sewing patterns I could find for masks were from the far East, and we've all seen photos of pollution masks in Chinese cities
