Non mask wearers

I’ve been generally observing in recent weeks since 19th July (and before too really) and the majority of people I see with no mask are men. I noticed for a while in the pandemic that in petrol stations it was men with no masks on, so got me noticing when I am out. Does this seem the same to you?
I am just interested, is this a general view or me being sexist (hope not). I wonder if men feel like they ‘look stupid’ in a mask so less likely to wear one?

@Againstmachine

Those who continue to wear masks generally just type in a non chalent way about how they'll help and how those vulnerable could be protected or feel safer.

Oh you meant those who are calling people selfish cunts.

Those you got called names and abused in shops when not wearing masks.

Oh yeah the mask people are really nice.

This a thousand times.

Interesting how mumsnet just concentrates polarising views. A real cesspit of seething prejudice and resentment. It's why I love it.

DP and I had a few days away this week. We went shopping and maybe 50% had masks. When we went out for food was only really the staff in masks. Nobody had them on wandering around in bars. We loved it, felt so normal. I have stopped wearing mine in supermarkets now too

From the Telegraph

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2021/08/06/wearing-face-mask-has-become-politicised-says-government-scientist/

Wearing a face mask has become about making a political statement rather than public health, a government scientist has said.

Prof Clifford Stott, of Keele University, told LBC: "We know that wearing masks, particularly in crowded, poorly ventilated environments, has a big impact on the levels of transmission that can take place.

"But also I think, particularly now, wearing a mask is also communicating to others about a sense of responsibility – and I think that's a key issue in mask-wearing now, unfortunately."

Prof Stott, a member of the Scientific Pandemic Insights Group on Behaviours (SPI-B), added: "I think, unfortunately, it's become almost a little bit politicised whether one wears one or not, which is I think a shame."

He said transport networks mandating the wearing of masks assisted him in "not feeling awkward wearing one".

Boris Johnson has said people should still wear a mask when in crowded areas, despite the laws on coverings being scrapped last month.

Imnothereforthedrama · 06/08/2021 17:46

Past giving a shit what people think of mask wearers or non mask wearers. The abuse on here has been disgusting for non mask wearers so stay home if it upsets you but happy that those don’t have to wear a mask no longer have to explain why . Ffs just get on with your life if your double vaccinated.

itsgettingwierd · 06/08/2021 17:48

@southeastdweller

That's very strong and emotive language.

Yes, rather like your ‘because I’m not a selfish dick’ passive aggressive and childish remark.

I'm just explaining that I don't wear a mask because I'm clinging to some life raft because I'm fearful. I've had it and I'm double jabbed.

I wear a mask because I realise it helps lower transmission and helps others feel less vulnerable. Therefore I'm not being a dick.

Neither do I feel I need to wear one for my own safety.

I do feel in the winter months it would be more pertinent.

southeastdweller · 06/08/2021 17:54

But you’re saying, indirectly, that people like me who choose not to wear masks are ‘selfish dicks’. I don’t care one way or another what you think of me, but come on - own it.

Parker231 · 06/08/2021 18:05

I don’t understand why people who aren’t medically exempt are no longer wearing a mask but have given up spending any time thinking about them.

I don’t understand why people who aren’t medically exempt are no longer wearing a mask but have given up spending any time thinking about them.
Because I don't want to and only did it when it was legally mandated. Not that hard to understand really.
Willwebebuyingnumber11 · 06/08/2021 18:24

@Parker231 there’s nothing to understand.

Parker231 · 06/08/2021 18:29

Which is why I have given up spending any time wondering why people don’t wear a mask

Maybe, just maybe..... they don't want or have to wear one, you do what you feel best, and let other people make their own decision. Mine all went in the bin.
Chessie678 · 06/08/2021 19:41

If they are such an important factor in reducing transmission why haven’t cases risen since the mask mandate was lifted? Do people think that cases would have fallen more if masks had remained mandatory?

CorianderBee · 06/08/2021 20:56

I'm not sure it's that useful. I almost always wear my mask but it snapped once and so I didn't have one on the tube. An older woman decided to shout at me despite it being within the law.

This isn't Berlin FGS!

Malteser71 · 06/08/2021 22:04

I always found it quite curious that the second wave was worse than the first, when we started mandating masks AFTER the first wave.

I can’t help thinking they did bugger all.

Because I don't want to. I have never ever been afraid of Covid and only wore a mask because it was a legal requirement. Now it is not, I am not wearing one.

The above typical polarised English attitude sums up our world beating Covid per capita deadly performance.

There is scientific reason why we collectively created the Kent variant and why the pandemic will continue flourish and thrive where ever there is no regard to personal and collective risk mitigation management. The vaccination is helpful but only a partial solution! The solution is us and our behaviour and not to be blasé and contaminate each other “inadvertently.” Those that mix indiscriminately - are you accurately Covid tested negatively all the time for your confidence that you are a part of the solution and not the perpetual problem? English exceptionalism entitlement does not seem to be a defence against the pandemic but the reason.

idontlikealdi · 06/08/2021 22:35

We are on holiday on the south coast, I haven't seen anyone in mask for the last week, anywhere, male or female.

HappydaysArehere · 06/08/2021 23:01

They are supposed to be wearing them on public transport and some don’t. There is a notice on the buses and it is mandatory. The drivers say nothing and some get on with them and then remove them while sitting directly behind the driver. Makes me mad. It’s not fair on the drivers as they need protecting.

HappydaysArehere · 06/08/2021 23:05

@Sleepinghyena

What is the point of this post? They are acting within the law, but still you judge....
As said above, it is mandatory to wear them on public transport. They are not acting within the law if they don’t. Trouble is that some people are confused and think you can do as you like anywhere.

People thought eating a meal magically protected them asb much as a mask, and didn't realise they weren't supposed to be mixing outside their bubble on restaurant tables?

Yes, it's ONLY English people who dislike masks. Hmm
bluetongue · 06/08/2021 23:20

If Covid is here to stay does that mean that masks are too? I struggle with the idea of wearing masks in some capacity with no end date. They do have downsides and the huge amount of disposable masks are an environmental nightmare.

Icantstopeatinglol · 06/08/2021 23:26

I’m not wearing one and was shielding most of last year. Im double jabbed and have recently had covid. I feel like I’ve done as much as I can and I want a normal life. I don’t judge anyone else for wearing or not wearing one. I’m still struggling with the after effects of covid (sinus issues and breathing) so the masks just make this worse. After the last few years no one should be judging others. We don’t know everyone’s situation so shouldn’t judge anyway.

Mum21031608 · 06/08/2021 23:26

I’m a 38 year old woman who doesn’t wear one.

Me and my DH went to Halfords a few days ago and there was a big sign on the door that said: “masks are still compulsory here unless exempt.”

A quick look into the store showed a very large number of customers without masks on any 3-4 staff members that I could see without wearing one either.

Therefore, me and my husband went in and nobody said anything to us. We got chatting to an un-masked store man about what we were after and just having general chit chat and laughter with him for about 5 minutes and it just felt so lovely and normal.
