Non mask wearers

I’ve been generally observing in recent weeks since 19th July (and before too really) and the majority of people I see with no mask are men. I noticed for a while in the pandemic that in petrol stations it was men with no masks on, so got me noticing when I am out. Does this seem the same to you?
I am just interested, is this a general view or me being sexist (hope not). I wonder if men feel like they ‘look stupid’ in a mask so less likely to wear one?

OP posts:

I noticed it more in younger people and also in supermarket staff, particularly on checkouts sitting there meeting lots of people with no mask. Oh well each to their own.

MRex · 06/08/2021 09:01

Yes, I agree it's almost always men in no mask, perhaps 90%. When it's women there tends to be a mask on their chin, or occasionally a lanyard.

PurpleDaisies · 06/08/2021 09:03

No, it’s mainly women here. That’s possibly because the most common place I see people is in the supermarket and more women are there doing the weekly shop than men.

DinosaurDiana · 06/08/2021 09:03

Yes, mostly young work men that I’ve seen in shops getting dinner without a mask.
Saying that, I went in Starbucks the other day and I was the only person I saw with a mask.

Sirzy · 06/08/2021 09:06

I would say it’s a pretty even mix of men and women and ages here.

I think most people are taking their judgement on the situation though to decide if they wear one. If I am somewhere quiet with nobody anywhere close I won’t wear one necessarily but I would if it felt busy OR someone else asked me too

squashyhat · 06/08/2021 09:07

I was in Brighton the other day. One of the most liberal woke places in the country. From whatI saw (I didn't go round staring at people's chins all day) the vast majority (young, old, male, female and alternative) wore masks correctly when appropriate.

readytosell · 06/08/2021 09:17

Where I live it's mixed men and women, old and young. No real pattern.

What is the point of this post? They are acting within the law, but still you judge....

Malteser71 · 06/08/2021 09:20

Exactly. Judging people for using their own judgement. How ironic.

PortMerrionCentre · 06/08/2021 09:20

I don’t notice what other people are doing. I couldn’t tell you if anyone was wearing a mask in the supermarket yesterday as I was just doing my shopping as normal

What is the point of most posts on this forum Confused

Maybe answer the question the OP asked?

Willow4987 · 06/08/2021 09:23

It’s majority men here too. I’m still wearing one (even though I don’t really want to) purely because I don’t want a confrontation with anyone when I’ve usually got very small children with me all the time. Maybe there’s something in men not worrying about those things 🤷🏻‍♀️

Not sure mumsnet would exist if you could only judge people for things that are illegal. Things can be legal but still wrong or unwise.

I went on a bus yesterday for the first time since the pandemic started, hardly anyone in a mask despite signs telling them to. I won't be going on one again any time soon.

stepupandbecounted · 06/08/2021 09:30

I am a woman and I don't wear a mask. Why would I? We are not required to by law and it is a known fact that they are pretty useless at stopping covid as well.

I am seeing more and more people ditch them now of all types.

We don't need to wear masks anymore for a good reason. The pandemic is in decline, we are reaching/reached herd immunity it is time to move on.

OP is seeking confirmation bias.
Imnothereforthedrama · 06/08/2021 10:00

Maybe just get on with your life and stop judging people. I use my own judgement if it’s not busy I don’t wear a mask if it is I do .
I also social distance probably more so than mask wearers . If you can social distance if you can’t wear a mask . Some mask wearers are so close to you when it’s really not necessary .

Wheresmrpenguin · 06/08/2021 10:00

Nope, 50/50 ive seen young and old, i'm female and don't wear one.
I actually had one man, with 2 kids, 30's dramatically tut and pull (literally yanked) his kids away from non-mask wearers.

Unfashionable · 06/08/2021 10:03

It’s basic human psychology. Men are, in general, significantly less risk-averse and less neurotic than women. They take more risks and they worry less about what could go wrong. Which is why fewer men wear masks and why more men are killed in motorbike accidents.

sadperson16 · 06/08/2021 10:06

I'm an older woman,I'm not wearing one.Its another waste of time.

itsgettingwierd · 06/08/2021 10:08

I also noticed it was men at petrol stations during pandemic! I'm a keyworker so worked through and so still did my weekly top up.

The petrol station assistant I know well even mentioned about people not wearing them to get petrol.

Also the same in town and supermarkets. Seems to be younger men 20's and older men 60's who don't wear masks and refuse to follow the one way system. I don't care what they're personal opinions of covid and their risk is. But I do care that they make others who are vulnerable feel uncomfortable because the walk at them maskless instead of just 3m to the right which is the side that gives the way they are.

A lot of people where I live are still wearing masks for shopping etc and indoors and I'm not sure I've noticed those who choose not to wear a mask increasing - just it's generally the same group of people.

It's an interesting discussion that highlights social attitudes in differing groups. There may or may not be a correlation.

If that level of discussion is too intellectual for you you can't see the point it's probably best you didn't post 🤷‍♀️

MareofBeasttown · 06/08/2021 10:17

I take the tube or a bus most days. About 30-40% not wearing masks. Seem to be evenly divided between men and women, but mostly young.

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 06/08/2021 10:19

I noticed Aldi's sign outside said please feel free to continue to wear a mask if you wish... I did notice more and more peeps are opting out and not wearing one. I bumped into 2 ex-neighbours and they were maskless and I was just thinking Why? Why? Why wouldn't you? But enough people still wearing one for me to not feel the odd one out. Other shops I've been to eg B+Q said please continue to wear a mask and everyone was just popping one on on entry no issue.

what a goady post. 'why would I?' - what a ridiculous disingenuous question.

you are right about it no longer being a legal requirement but where on earth do you (and others) get the idea that wearing one doesn't help to to reduce the transmission of covid? Common sense says that they do.
