Requiring the exempt to identify themselves?

Attached is a photo from the Science Museum on their mask policy. If you are exempt from wearing, you can 'if you would like', be given a wristband. It's worded as a choice, but I looked into this after my friend who is exempt went with her kids, was asked if she was wearing a mask and when she told them she was exempt she was told to go to x desk over there and get a wristband. It wasn't presented as a choice.

Am I the only one who thinks that it's wrong to make exempt people identify themselves as 'other'? Is this legally enforceable?'

I was on the DLR the other day and heard an announcement that stated 'everyone is required to wear a mask, unless you can show that you are exempt'. Again, have I missed something? You do not have to prove your exemption, what are these companies playing at?

@CataclysmicVariable - clearly you are very rude. And that is after looking at the content of your post. At least @Sockwomble made a point I could understand and comment upon. Your posts are just rude and unconstructive.

CataclysmicVariable · 02/08/2021 19:07

Not that in constructive, you did manage to work out the meaning of my post this time! Grin

Walkaround · 02/08/2021 19:09

Oh yes, @CataclysmicVariable - it’s not hard to recognise rude and obnoxious people with no real argument to offer, just abuse.

It was like comparing apples and pears
The badge is verified by your local council
So that when you leave it a traffic warden knows that the owner is permitted to park there and not someone illegally grabbing a nearby spot while they nip to a cash machine or whatever
And we all know that happens

That’s why your example was ridiculous

Walkaround · 02/08/2021 20:06

@shewalkslikerihanna - still not seeing why the example is ridiculous, unless you are arguing that a wristband would be more acceptable if verified by your local council!

Anyway I’m out
No point discussing the minutiae
Businesses are out of order asking exempt mask wearers to wear a wristband and I hope if challenged people tell them so.

Villanelle17 · 02/08/2021 20:33

I had a doctor's letter stating why I'm exempt and yet a secretary still said I needed to wear one. Funny thing was she wasn't wearing a mask either and not behind a screen. I chose to leave.
Legally you don't have to prove exemption but I wouldn't mind wearing a wrist band if asked politely.

There was a poster last year who very eloquently spoke about how her inability to wear a mask meant that she had been unable to pursue her ambition to become a surgeon, and she had become a GP instead

Hello. That was me. I've tended to stay off the mask threads because it's actually really upsetting to read the vile comments that some people have made towards people who cannot wear a mask.

My reason is that it affects my usually mild asthma. As this poster remembers (bless you) I discovered the effects of mask wearing when I was training to be a doctor 30 years ago - so very much pre covid. I had dreams of being a surgeon - but my disability (and it is a disability) meant that I had to rethink my career.

In the last year I've mostly stayed at home and restricted my life because I didn't want to be abused like some exempt people. Now I'm venturing out more and getting excited about trips to Waitrose!

No one is asking to do anything. People here are debating non-existing policy. If you visit Science Museum website you'll see there is nothing about wristband and no one gives a sh*t if you're wearing mask or not.
Xenia · 02/08/2021 22:06

It is certainly a difficult and divisive issue even now that most places follow the law and make masks voluntary. I can see both sides even though I don't wear a mask in shops.

Bizawit · 02/08/2021 22:39

@EmmyLake

I find it weird that people are still wanting to visit places like the science museum if you have to wear a mask still. I absolutely love museums/galleries etc but would struggle to gain any enjoyment from the day if I was masked up for that long.
Fully agree.

And yeh the wristband thing is totally out of order. And “written evidence” WTAF?

Sadly this is the type of nasty society we have turned into because of a naturally occurring respiratory virus.

Xenia · 03/08/2021 08:48

Indeed, although there are good people on both sides of the debate. I would actively avoid places that choose to have mask rules where the law does not now require them. Others would avoid places that do NOT force everyone into a mask.

That picture I shared was from the email that they send before visiting 🤷🏽‍♀️ maybe they've since changed it following 'feedback'.
