If you gave your DC’s covid, how poorly were they?

I know the headlines are that children don’t suffer from covid as much as adults, but what was your personal experience?
Single parent so can’t isolate from them, a LF for me this morning, PCR booked today, I’m not worried about myself but worried about DCs 6 and 2 getting poorly from it

Should say a positive LF for me, sorry!

DD2 was 9 months, had heavy cold like symptoms for 3 days, bit grumpy & tired. Then fine. DD1 was just super grumpy, no illness symptoms at all. I only tested her because we all had it. All fine in a few days. No long term effects at all here.

undercurrent15 · 26/07/2021 11:51

Thank you so much @Bobholll, reassuring to here. DS6 has been very grumpy the last few days and has a rash on chest so may also get him booked for test at same time just to rule out

Dd4 totally fine apart from change in taste she won't eat anything other than custard creams. Everything else tastes yukky.

OliveTree75 · 26/07/2021 11:55

My ds1 caught it off me and he had a sore throat only which he only complained about once. Other than that would never have known he had it.

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 26/07/2021 12:02

Mine haven't had it but several of their friends have - most had no symptoms at all or cold symptoms only.

The only one who was ill was (is) a teen friend of my eldest who was and still is really quite ill, she had mild asthma before hand and since catching covid 19 has been in hospital for almost 7 weeks because her asthma is now so extreme and not yet under any sort of control - she's having multiple severe asthma attacks every week. That is a pre existing condition of course, but prior to the covid infection it was a mild one (she was very involved in sports but won't be able to play any time in the foreseeable future).

All the other children (8 or so) we know well who've had it have been fine.

Darbs76 · 26/07/2021 12:04

DS gave it to me, we all have it now. He’s 17 and super fit and was rough for a few days. Dd also has it but only on day 2. I have been the worse (double jabbed)

Cosybelles · 26/07/2021 12:04

They didn't get it from me, but my DC age 3 had it and wasn't very poorly, she's had worse colds. A slightly raised temperature over night, and the next day she was very grumpy and clingy when her Calpol/Neurofen wore off. The next day she was back to normal.

RiverSkater · 26/07/2021 12:08

My 9 yr old had a few snuffles at most.
Yours will be fine I'm sure!

Dont feel bad, I reckon everybody will get it eventually.

bathorshower · 26/07/2021 12:14

DD was slightly under the weather for a day. We can't be absolutely certain it was Covid, as it was during the first wave, but DH had all the symptoms. However DD barely suffered at all.

Lindy2 · 26/07/2021 12:14

DCs aged 10 and 12.

Both got Covid toes - purple blisters on their feet with yellow pus spots in them. Confused They complained about the toes being itchy.

They also then both had 2 days of pretty horrible vomiting. The 12 year old was worse than the 10 year old.

We never did get positive tests from them though. However, as they were both in isolation and living with 2 Covid positive parents I have no doubt it was Covid they had. I think if we'd tested when they were ill enough to be vomiting we would probably have got positive results. However, by then a trip from the bed to the bathroom was a major event for DH and I and there was no way either of us could safely get 2 vomiting children to a test centre or even get to a post box for a postal test.

We all made a full recovery although it took a while.

I hope you are all ok.

Donationwitheverypack · 26/07/2021 12:16

I was really poorly in a bad flu kind of way, rather than hospital kind of way, for 2 full weeks. DS2 spent 1 day in bed and was fine after that. DS1 wasn't ill at all.

Aozora13 · 26/07/2021 12:17

I can’t say 100% we all had it as was pre-testing but my DC both had coldy symptoms. DD2 age 2 had it worse with a really horrible cough and a temp, DD1 age 4 just had a bit of a cough. But in any other year would have thought just a cold, kept DD2 at home and sent DD1 in as normal Confused! I was laid up for months with long covid and DH was fine.

BakedBeeeen · 26/07/2021 12:19

DD (3) had mild cold. DS (6) no symptoms.

isthisouting · 26/07/2021 12:24

How long ago did she have it? Has her taste shown signs of returning?

My DC had just turned 2yo. Medium-hot for a day or two and voice sounded a bit funny one day. Slept and ate normally for the most part. Hoping no long lasting symptoms (nothing I am aware of anyway)

undercurrent15 · 26/07/2021 12:56

This is all really good to know, thanks guys. Hoping they follow suit and come out mildly. I’m sure we will be okay and as @RiverSkater said I’m sure we’ll probably all get it eventually, just gutted its happened!

I hope you're not feeling too rough and the children bounce through it all!

Not me, but one of my closest friends, was very, very unwell with Covid, in hospital for nearly a fortnight and still struggling to recover. She passed it on to her DD (7) who had a very slight cough for one day and then - nothing. Her other DD (9) didn't catch it at all. She was really upset about having passed it on - I think because of how bad she was feeling it really worried her - but fortunately the children were ok.

Best of luck!

Janaih · 26/07/2021 13:13

@isthisouting she first refused to eat her dinner on Thurs. I just put that down to it being a very hot day though. When she did the same the next day on Friday I did a lateral flow on her which was positive. Took her for a proper pcr test on Saturday.
Ha that sounds like a Craig David song Grin

undercurrent15 · 26/07/2021 18:01

Thank you @changingstages, sorry to hear about your friend!
Glad that her children were okay though. Feeling pretty tired/under the weather/emotional! But PCR test done, just waiting for that to come back. My youngest gets high temp spikes easily so I’m most worried about her but we’ve got lots of calpol in, fingers crossed I get the worst of it instead

I breastfed a 12 month old when I had covid and he never showed any symptoms. I caught it off my 10 year old and he was positive but asymptomatic.

Puffthemagicdragongoestobed · 26/07/2021 19:50

DC1 (11) had a fever for a couple of days, a cough and tiredness for a few days longer. Red eyes too.
DC2 (7) had nothing. Was just slightly off her food one day.

HungryHippo11 · 26/07/2021 22:31

DD4 - grumpy for a few days, then nasty cough for a few days (that's when we tested), a bit snotty for a dew more days.

DD1 - one night of cough and high temperature, followed by a few days of very snotty nose.

Basically the same as a normal cold.

Realitea · 27/07/2021 09:01

Dd had it last year and she said everything tasted gone off which lasted a day. She had quite a bad cough but recovered well and it didn’t make her that ill that she stayed in bed or anything. Slight temperature for a couple of days too.

QueenofBrickdon · 27/07/2021 09:03

DS 9 had a croaky voice. DD 7 had a blocked up nose.

No other symptoms, they were only tested as my husband and I both tested positive.
