The tail of two hairdressers……:

Rabblesthecat · 24/07/2021 18:23

So on my high street there are two very good hairdressers - a and b

I’ve used both over the years but more recently b. Mainly because when they reopened last summer A were hard to get hold of.

B requires stylists to have full PPE and client to wear a mask at all times. Nothing as changed since they reopened last summer and they intend
To continue that way going forward

A on the other hand - back to normal. Magazines and coffees provided. Stylists will wear a mask if requested by the client. Client can do as they wish.

I’m booked in with A next month. I could get an appointment with B tomorrow.

Driving past both. B had tumbleweed and A was fully booked and people waiting.

Just a local
Observation

I am not sure what I will do, tbh. I wore a mask in and felt a bit of a fool given nobody else was. But I had gone in for an eyebrow shaping and that is very close quarters. I think I will be doing my own eyebrows.

I went to a pub yday. We had to order from an app with details on the table. Irrelevant but we noticed differences in how the app behaved for iphone and android and there seemed some extra level of privacy with the iphone. I didnt like having to decide whether to tip before I'd had any food or service!! But generally didnt mind it.
Back to topic I generally dont mind wearing a mask and mostly have continued to wear one in shops and indoor spaces as well as public transport (as have majority of others where I am) however the last time I went to the hairdressers my mask got soaked when she washed my hair!

Loyaultemelie · 24/07/2021 18:58

I live in Northern Ireland but I am CV and luckily always got my hair done at home, now we do it outdoors and my amazing hairdresser wears her mask/visor, we both test (LFT) before she comes too to be extra safe. She also wears her full Ppe with all clients (and expects us clients to) and tries to do as many outdoors as possible or indoors with window/door open.

taliopolis · 24/07/2021 18:59

I haven't been since rules changed but I'd definitely prefer B. But then I wear a mask for 8hrs a day every day to work so it not longer phases me. With a close contact activity like this, where you're in the same small space for up to 3 hrs, it makes complete sense to keep masks, ventilation etc. Cases are rising. I'm double jabbed and in my 40s but I still don't want to catch it and potentially be floored for a couple of weeks.

“My hairdresser still wears PPE and wants all her client to sign a form to confirm they've had the vaccine or she will refuse service. She's an excellent hairdresser but I won't be back”

Why not?

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 24/07/2021 18:59

A mask will do fuck all for either of you when you're literally touching for 30 minutes or more. It's all for show. I'd prefer A. If you're nervous of covid don't go to the hairdresser!

noblegreenk · 24/07/2021 19:00

I'd use B. My dad is undergoing chemo and is ECV so I'm still being careful.

wtfisgoingonhere21 · 24/07/2021 19:02

Magazines and drinks have been allowed since the may change of rules.

Believe me our life would be a lot easier if we wernt offering them due to the amount of extra sanitising and cleaning and time it takes up to supply these things

Damned if we do and damned if we dont op to be honest.

We have lost more clients because they don't want to sit for long amounts of time masked up than the other way round to be honest.

With the rule change we stated all staff would still be wearing masks etc and clients can make their own choice for themselves because people have very different views.

To the poster saying salons are Covid factories, there's not been one case so far in my area of salons that's started from a salon.

We rigorously clean and sanitise and can work on only one person at a time anyway

The Covid factories Round here tend to be the local pubs and restaurants that have varying people through the doors from early open to close

Salons have a lot more control over who comes in.

How do they cut hair when someone has a mask on? Using clippers and scissors around the ears for short hair especially?

PrettyBlunt · 24/07/2021 19:05

I'd choose B all day long.

PrettyBlunt · 24/07/2021 19:05

You hold the face covering?
HelloDulling · 24/07/2021 19:06

@kowari I unloop the mask but keep it on my face for that bit.

littlepeas · 24/07/2021 19:06

I would strongly prefer A. My hairdresser has recently moved salons, but both her new one and her old one are keeping masks. I’ll continue to go to get as I’ve been going to her for years and she’s the only one who can handle my son’s crazy mop but I would far prefer the set up of salon A.

wtfisgoingonhere21 · 24/07/2021 19:07

@kowari
We've been managing it with great difficulty for the last 15 months.
And still are for the clients wishing to continue to wear them.

As a poster above has said if your that worried about the risk you shouldn't really be going into a salon or a pub or anywhere close contact u til you feel comfortable.

Our industry has lost 8 months of income and then half the income allowed due to restrictions for the rest of the time we've been allowed to open since Covid.

Considering the majority of salons are independents or small business structures we've been hit hard.

People moaning about whether we are doing one thing or another don't realise how hard and expensive it's been and many salons have sadly gone under during the pandemic.

PetuniaButterworth · 24/07/2021 19:12

For everyone asking me why I won't be back I have been double vaccinated and have no issues with continuing to wear a mask of it makes anyone feel more comfortable. I have an issue with disclosing private medical information to a third party,. I think it's a bad precedence to set.

millymae · 24/07/2021 19:16

I was at the hairdresser earlier this week and whilst some restrictions have been removed they are definitely still a B, and I’m happy about that.
Customers are required to wear masks, as are the stylists and apprentices. The requirement on them to wear a visor in addition has been removed.
When they first reopened all the gowns were disposable but they’ve gone back to the usual type which are washed after each use. They’ve decided to keep using the disposable recyclable towels and haven’t yet reintroduced the free tea/coffee/water although clients are welcome to bring a hot drink in with them or use their own cup to get water from the dispenser. Magazines haven’t been reintroduced but again clients can bring in their own. From what I could tell there has been no reduction in the amount of sanitising of equipment, chairs etc that was carried out when they first reopened.
I have no problem with any of these rules, as I’m still firmly in the mask wearing camp.

kowari · 24/07/2021 19:16

@wtfisgoingonhere21
I was just wondering as it seemed like it might be difficult. My barber had the sign up but no customers wore masks when I was there before they became optional. I know how hard it's been for the industry and I always tip.

megletthesecond · 24/07/2021 19:16

I would use B.
I have a mobile hairdresser who cuts my hair in the garden. (May have to skip trims in the winter though).

Ohpulltheotherone · 24/07/2021 19:16

I wouldn’t go to b because I did not enjoy my last mask experience at the hairdressers - way too hot and humid to wear an itchy mask for that long. It’s supposed to be an enjoyable relaxing experience and it definitely wasn’t for me.

Saying that I don’t knock people for choosing to do that, I’d rather just not go to the hairdressers right now if the only options are either full masks, PPE, no drinks, no bags etc or no provisions at all.

We know that surfaces aren’t a major risk so I see no issues with salons offering drinks and mags - drinks especially. They are surely all washed in between clients?

Door open, mask optional but preferred, drinks but maybe bring your own mag / book.
Manage the bookings so people are not waiting around and overlapping appointments.

A common sense middle ground?

Oblomov21 · 24/07/2021 19:18

Went to the hairdressers Yesterday. Had to wear a mask, didn't like it, but knew it was there rules.

Lizzie523 · 24/07/2021 19:19

I would use B. As I am in Scotland that is still the option.

My 'B' hairdresser says ideally she wants to Keep the rules for a while even after the rule is lifted. I will still go to her.

I actually agree with this. I think it’s going too far
Poppins2016 · 24/07/2021 19:22

I'm very pleased that my hairdresser is operating like B, I wouldn't book unless mask wearing was enforced for both client and stylist.

Lockheart · 24/07/2021 19:27

I'd like whichever one doesn't have a tail, please.

lastcall · 24/07/2021 19:29

My poor hairdresser had to shut her salon down again this week because of a covid contact within the premises.. Someone else who works there has tested positive already... and they've already lost so much income this year with all the shutdowns

Why on earth wouldn't you support establishments that are taking precautions to keep their livelihoods?

B all the way right now.
