Vaccination for 17 year olds

Zorinindustries · 23/07/2021 17:55

I heard that those who are 3 months away from thier 18th birthday can now get a vaccination.
But DD has tried to book on the nhs website and it says she is not eligible.

And the walk in centres say they are only for over 18s too.
Has anyone managed to get a jab for an almost 18 year old?

I thought it was if you were going to be 18 by end of August you.could book.

insancerre · 23/07/2021 18:21

Our apprentice at work got a jab at a local centre, she was 17 in January
I’m on the Fylde coast in Lancashire

ittakes2 · 23/07/2021 18:35

We are having the same issue - the child will be 18 mid August but still can’t book rang nhs and they also confirmed they can’t book and walk in clinics also said has to be 18.

nether · 23/07/2021 18:40

Not all clinics do u18s (it depends on the qualifications of the HCP in charge, according to what my nearest centre told me)

And yes it's a complete PITA to deal with booking for a u18.

We got bounced repeatedly on central booking system, but because the jab was for medical reasons, the GP was able to sort it out - but it took 2 sodding months

Have you tried speaking to a human being on 119, as well as tangling with the online form?

Zorinindustries · 23/07/2021 18:46

I will get her to try 119, or just wait 3 weeks till her birthday, I guess it's not that urgent, she's managed all this time without it, a few more weeks hopefully won't make a difference

Less than 2 weeks till my youngest is 18 and I've still not been able to get one for him using the online booking. If I can't get one for him next week I'm gonna call up

@Planky2020

Which jab are they giving to under 18's?? I know a healthy 19 Yr old been in icu for a week after having moderna jab... So I'd avoid that!
U18s is always Pfizer as that's the only one licensed for that age group.

Or at least that was the case when we did it. AZ isn't, but I don't know about moderna.

Are you the same Planky2020 who thinks Delta is a "made up variant to force people into having the vaccine"?
DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat · 23/07/2021 22:43

My 17 year old had hers because DH is clinically vulnerable, we could only book it with a text ‘invite’ from the GP (we emailed the GP and they sent the invite via text and email). Maybe you need to go that route if the booking system can’t recognise the imminent birthday?

hairycabbage · 23/07/2021 23:00

My 17yo ds got Pfizer simply because they had some left over after non- attended/ cancelled appointments one day (we know someone who works at the surgery and they asked him)

NotDonna · 24/07/2021 01:04

My soon to be 18 year old was jabbed a few days ago. The nhs has on online service where there’s a list of walk in centres ‘near you’. I think I googled ‘vaccine walk in centres near me’ and the nhs find a centre popped up. Most of the centres listed stipulated over 18’s only or over 40’s but one just said both Pfizer and AZ available (and no age restrictions given). So we took a gamble & turned up. It was empty. The doctor on-site had to sign it off but that took seconds and a parent needed to be present. So maybe try and find the list for centres near you & a centre that doesn’t stipulate over 18’s. Good luck.

That can't be in the UK - I checked since posting yesterday, and there is no change site DC were done. It's still Pfizer only for u18s as that is the only one licensed for use in that age group (same for all home nations)

UsedUpUsername · 24/07/2021 06:27

Can’t you just wait a few months? Unless she’s going to work in a care home there’s literally no rush

The next wave will start from Uni’s. If she’s going to Uni in Sept, she should have it now.
Mindymomo · 24/07/2021 07:17

Dr on tv said that they’ve not had any information through yet to get the teenagers 3 months under 18 through yet and as soon as they do they will be contacting people. There are many walk in sites near me, the biggest at Sandown Park Racecourse is open every day and even Thorpe Park (only one day) are doing walk ins, still only for over 18’s, but a good idea to get those in for jabs whilst they are there.

MargaretThursday · 24/07/2021 07:23

Some of dd's friends at school (year12) were texted to make an appointment towards the end of school. Earliest they could be 18 is September.

NotNowFGS · 24/07/2021 10:06

I'm in the same boat. DD turns 18 on 21 August and is going to Uni a month later. I'd like her jabbed now so that she can have her second dose prior to going to Uni. If the government had any sense they'd be making sure all incoming freshers were double jabbed well before the start of the next academic year.

NotNowFGS · 24/07/2021 10:12

www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-57885845 NHS been asked to vaccinate those within 3 months of 18th birthday so I guess we should expect the call any day now.

Taciturn · 24/07/2021 10:29

I would also urge caution. CDC data suggests (several times) more young people hospitalised from vaccines than covid:

But do your own research. We all have to make our own choices and take our chances based on our own risk criteria.

It'll be the same ICU that a poster last weekend said was "full" of young vaccinated people on ventilators.

That the same Alex Berenson who doesn't believe in Covid and has been widely discredited for spreading conspiracy theories and lies, or a different one?
Geamhradh · 24/07/2021 10:52

www.reuters.com/article/fact-check-covid-cdc-idUSL2N2OL174

CDC actually refutes everything Berenson says.

scaevola · 24/07/2021 10:53

That reports under 400 hospital admissions when they are vaccinating 600,000 a week (I'll try and look out the total figure - since May so around 6,000,000?)

You need to compare that to the >4,000,000 children who have had confirmed covid with hospitalisation rates of 1-3% (data collected by state) - so that's 40,000 or more

CEC aren't saying the cardiac risks are insignificant, just that your DC is much more likely to require hospital treatment following covid than following the vaccination. And cardiac events occur with the wild disease too
