How typical is MN of real life when it comes to Covid?

I'm thinking the average poster generally a lot more concerned and anxious than the average person, but that might just be my biases at play.

OP posts:

Parallel universe to the community that I live in. Rarely see anyone in a mask and haven’t for weeks. Friends and family are not anxious at all.

For context I live in a multicultural/deprived demographic.

Againstmachine · 23/07/2021 20:40

Nope it isn't I don't think most release how most of real world works.

Ifitquacks · 23/07/2021 20:56

Oh dear. Clearly not friends of those at the BMA... There's always a few outliers

I mean… they could be outliers. But all the medics I know are pretty relaxed too. Being quietly cautious but otherwise getting on with life. Woman across the road is a senior nurse in ICU and she’s always followed the rules but as soon as they were relaxed she had friends round etc and is currently on holiday in Spain! I have 2 GP friends who are the same, plus a friend who is an A&E Dr. All outliers I guess.

jumpbounce · 23/07/2021 20:59

Maybe everyone on here is just incredibly lucky that they don't have to have concern about covid, for some people though it will come knocking at their door yet.

'Can't afford to pay the rent if they isolate'....how will they afford to pay the rent if they ever get unwell?
I've had to give up my job and income completely in order to shield our CEV child but even pre covid there was many many times where I had to put my child first and sit with them in a hospital ward and not receive any wages....in those moments the thought of where the money is coming from is the furtherest thing from my mind because no money in the world brings good health.

Someone i know (used to be a friend but no longer due to her views) was anti everything covid for an entire year, refused to follow any of the rules, refused to test and isolate and did nothing only moan about freedoms and had no respect for the fact others may be more vulnerable and just seen these people as anxious and overreacting....now in tragic circumstances they have a young family member who is extremely vulnerable to covid and they have to shield....of course she's all of the be grateful and be kind to others now, funny how something like that can change an opinion so much.

Since the NHS is one of the biggest employers in the world it would be odd if most of us didn’t know some HCPs.

Yes, my point was just that none of the ones I know are overly anxious about Covid. Quietly careful, but living their lives. Going on holiday, out for meals, having friends round etc. @Tealightsandd says that medics like that are ‘outliers’.
MarshaBradyo · 23/07/2021 21:10

I think HCP can be relaxed for sure just going by family and growing up with it around

HelloMissus · 23/07/2021 21:17

quacks same here.
They’re just doing what we’re all doing - cracking on.

frumpety · 23/07/2021 21:18

IRL I don't think I know anyone who is against having the vaccine or is into the various conspiracy theories associated with covid, doesn't mean they don't exist. I don't know anyone who is massively anxious ( anymore, a few early on were ) about covid and I don't know anyone who has children who are really struggling with their mental health, again it doesn't mean they don't exist.

ZednotZee · 23/07/2021 21:22

Most of my friends and acquaintances are far more suspicious of the government than is usually found on MN.

Especially during the last few weeks. I think they may have overplayed their hand and underestimated their audience.

chellingham · 23/07/2021 21:27

Yes agree. My family are all getting on with it. All the adults are double jabbed. All our friends are too, apart from one who is currently bed bound with Covid and said she hadn't got round to booking her jabs.

We are going out normally, but wearing masks where appropriate. Still hand sanitising though, but that's a good thing as hygiene was a bit lax before. I'm asthmatic and have a year long asthma cough. I get a bit pissed off with people asking me 'have you had a Covid test' Angry

Againstmachine · 23/07/2021 21:38

Yep at last count is somewhere between 1.2 and 1.5 million.

Some mumsnetters are scared of any opening up even though they want someone to risk it bringing them shopping

Toddlerteaplease · 23/07/2021 21:53

Mumsnet is a parallel universe anyway! No one I know has attitudes that are on mumsnet.

Always made me laugh on MN from the outset the cries of locking the country up and ‘STFAH HOW HARD IS IT??!!!’ but those doing the crying expecting everything they needed to magically appear for them. Maybe they didn’t connect the dots and realise it involved people going about their normal lives to provide it.
HelloMissus · 23/07/2021 22:09

They want people to grow and pick and package and deliver their food.
They want factories open.
And power stations.
And if they have a problem they want plumbers and chippies and sparks to come out.
They want vets open.
They want to watch TV (which means they want crews working).
They want caters and HCPs and teachers to work.

Yeah, I think it completely passes them by that other people, probably less fortunate than themselves, are providing them with everything they need while they stay at home. Lockdowns pushes the infection burden on to the working classes.
TheVolturi · 23/07/2021 22:12

I think it's a bit crazy here covid wise at times! Read a post about an unwell child and the first reply was you need to self isolate and get the child tested! 🙄 I mean, there are literally so many illnesses going around, not everything is covid!

ZednotZee · 23/07/2021 22:14

@HelloMissus

Well, quite.

Of course middle class mummies of mumsnet have the time and inclination to wholly immerse themselves in the fear porn without needing to apply any critical thought to the situation.

This of us who, irrespective of our social class have been at the coal face see the situation far more realistically being that personal experience trumps media messages.

amicissimma · 23/07/2021 22:16

You can tell the attitude of many who work in the NHS by the fact that when tickets are offered to them for various events - I think the Euros final was one, but there are all sorts, in and out of doors - there seems to be no shortage of takers.

It doesn't seem that the outliers are the ones who are happy to get out and about among the crowds.

HelloMissus · 23/07/2021 22:18

Yes. My husband’s work offered a draw to HCPS for footie tickets and thousands applied.
Some a
Paediatricians won and went to the finals.

Chillychangchoo · 23/07/2021 22:23

I went to a bongo bingo NHS night this Wednesday night just gone (basically a bingo rave 🤦‍♀️). Managed to get a ticket from my nurse friend and we all went together. The whole venue was packed with NHS employees.

That's the thing the majority of the NHS haven't been treating covid patients it's a load of crap.

Jenasaurus · 23/07/2021 22:27

@Waxonwaxoff0

People are way more anxious on MN. I don't know a single person in real life who has followed all rules throughout.
Just thinking, does this mean all of us on this thread are thereore more anxious as we belong to MN?
FizziWater · 23/07/2021 22:28

I think it's a fair point about CEV people spending far too much time online.
I fall into that category though you wouldn't guess if you met me. I struggle to get used to it myself. I went from being fit and well to having several long term conditions over the space of 3 years. Including cancer which I'm now clear of.
So I lurch from feeling desperate to get life back to normal and slightly nervous when I do normal things.
My friends and family are generally rule abiding while doing the maximum of what's allowed, several medics among them. Some of the medics are paranoid and others more sanguine so a reflection of people in general. My adult DC are more cautious than I would expect 20+ year olds to be.
As to vaccine status there was a lot of discussion and mild competition when people first got them but I generally assume everyone has them. DS knows one person who hasn't and is slightly puzzled about it.

Backofbeyond50 · 23/07/2021 22:43

I think you tend to get polar views on a forum like mumsnet. People are more free because of the annominity to express extreme views. Most of my friends and relatives have a balanced view. They are not cowering away at home but do see the virus as a threat so still wear masks etc. I personally know two ecv people who are not very elderly. They are late forties and early 50s and both work. One is my dh. Yey he is pretty chilled and has not cowered away at home either apart from shielding. He still rarely frequents supermarkets but that is probably a good thing for our budget.
The only people I know in rl with extreme views are full on anti vax conspiracy theorist. Sheple and face nappies etc is part of their new vocabulary. I have been quite shocked by stuff they have posted online. I don't actually think I will get over some of the things they have said.
