Morning,

Please can you post any links you come across explaining how the U.K. government's current covid strategy is supposed to work, and why it's a good idea?

Cheers.

Having spent the day in Edinburgh yesterday I don’t see how large parts of the economy can survive. Whilst not having huge crowds was lovely for me as an individual, all these places are geared up to have 3 or 4 times the number of people that were actually there, especially in July!
I am of the opinion that if any of this was as simple as some people make out, then our elected representatives would have worked that out by now!

The government is relying on the public to be sensible as we unlock and we all know that is unlikely to happen . Why are young men not being vaccinated? Because some of them they think they are invincible like they do when they drive like idiots . Sadly some of the current deaths are young men. Though it’s harsh for the businesses I think Boris is right to make double vaccination compulsory to attend certain events with lots of people. It’s to protect everyone. I think universities should ask for proof before students start unless there is a genuine medical reason to not be vaccinated.

HelloMissus · 20/07/2021 08:00

The problem with waiting is that it assumes a similar level of vaccine uptake to the that earlier this year.
Yet we’re seeing a sharp drop in uptake now. And will (presumably) only get worse.
The government have tried bribing with holidays and now night clubs.
But I think they know we’re possibly soon out of ideas.

This is a really interesting thread. I also like to hear both sides of an argument, and try to weigh things fairly. I don't trust the Conservative govt as far as I could throw them, but I do like and trust Chris Whitty et al. What seems to make it trickier for us (Scots) is fewer younger people vaccinated and different timings for when kids go back to school (mid August). As we can't control our borders, and will still have large numbers of holiday-makers arriving over the border (even if not in the vast numbers which would accompany the Edinburgh Festival/Fringe), it must be a right headache for ScotGov. You are always having to live with (and attempting to mitigate) the consequences of a policy made for another territory with different timelines.

But you need the tourist revenue, you really, really do!

@Indigopearl

Do we know when the UK is getting the extra 60m doses of pfizer ordered for the booster programme? We only had 40m doses originally which must be running low given there are 20 million 18 to 40s plus some older people recieved it.

I assume we can't start on the booster programme until these extra stocks arrive.

I wonder to what extent the UKs strategy of opening up now/natural immunity is becuase vaccine stocks are low. Yes we have a lot of AZ but it isn't much use for young people.

There is very limited info about available Pfizer, but I also strongly suspect we are running low (and that this must be one reason for the reduction in daily vax rates...big Q is whether it is also influencing decision not to vax teens)

@CryingAtTheDiscotheque - I volunteer in a vaccine centre in Yorkshire. We cannot give vaccines out for love nor money, young people here just aren’t interested. We’ve got such a surplus supply, that we are doing second doses at any point past 3 weeks from first dose. We’ve got bloody loads of Pfizer..

And indeed, any articles or opinions on how we'll know if the plan has failed, would be good too.

Thanks again.

This passive aggressive way of posting is not very dignified.

Quartz2208 · 21/07/2021 07:39

What are you trying to achieve from this @PrincessNutNuts.

Can you post articles that give a clear realistic path out of this either?

An option that takes into account where we are now (and not things that we should have done last year) and the behavioural and political aspects of this country.

I dont think many people think removing masks etc is a good idea and most people follow it still. But some of the suggestions fail I think to as well take into account the political ethos of the conservative party or cultural factors of the UK

Yes, The Times reporting similar this morning - sounds like my suspicions were unfounded.

It's a straightforward question asking for information.

Send some over to Australia. We’re crying out for Pfizer over here (maybe I can send a link to this thread to Scott Morrison).

See. Mumsnet, solving the Australian vaccination shortage Grin
