My ds will be 18 in a few weeks and our local vaccine centre is often last few days saying they have spare vaccines, if he goes will they give him one or does he have to actually wait until he turns 18 in a couple weeks ?

As I understand it they are not (yet) licensed in the UK for U18s so he'll have to wait. I also have a17 yo, 18 in August.

worriedatthemoment · 18/07/2021 23:12

I thoUght they were as know 17 year olds who have them but because they live with vulnerable people, mine is august too just seems to me that if doses are going spare or poss to waste best to use it. He wants to have it as well so its his choice .

Maybe its only in exceptional cases then.

There has been a lot of discussion about this on the WIWKAU (What I Wish I Knew About University) Facebook group. It is clear that practice has varied from area to area with some centres being very strict on only vaccinating over 18s and others being prepared to vaccinate 17-year-olds.

NotDonna · 18/07/2021 23:29

My DD is also 18 in August and has been turned away from the Pfizer ‘grab a jab’ sites. It’s quite frustrating isn’t it?

worriedatthemoment · 18/07/2021 23:29

Maybe I need to ask on next post they put up, hate to think of vaccine being wasted when he could use one up and its another person being vaccinated

OP posts:
worriedatthemoment · 18/07/2021 23:30

@NotDonna yes very as he is willing and jabs may be getting wasted.
Plus we spend time with my friend who is undergoing chemo so anything we can do to be safer would be helpful

We’ve been told to vaccinate any 17 yo who turns 18 within 1 month. I believe this is to extend to 3 months?

report from today that a decision to be made on jabs for under 18s within days

Oh that's interesting. Which area of the UK is that @Poshjock ?
emlouwat · 18/07/2021 23:38

Ds2 was vaccinated about a week before his 18th

worriedatthemoment · 18/07/2021 23:39

@Poshjock ok thanks I thought i read something like this but haven't been able to find it.
Might take him down and see anyway as won't hurt as only 5 mins away, then will wait and see decision on 16 year olds.
I know of so many cases now compared to ever before so see it as a way of hopefully helping .

petition.parliament.uk/petitions/591142
This petition was started by a Year 13 student with an August birthday. Unless the government allows 17-year-olds to be vaccinated, it will be impossible for many first year uni students to be fully vaccinated before starting university.

NotDonna · 19/07/2021 01:22

Covid:-19 Decision on vaccinations for under-18s 'within days' www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-57876608
Going to be decided in ‘next few days’. This should have been decided in May to ensure all those 18 year olds going to uni or to jobs were double jabbed in time.
Definitely a postcode lottery @Poshjock as I know some 17 year olds without underlying conditions who’ve turned up and it’s been no problem.

worriedatthemoment · 19/07/2021 10:25

@NotDonna yes thats whats annoying it should be same all along and def for those august born going to uni / work they should of included them as when no need to isolate fpr double jabbed and kids this group will still fall in to it as they won't be double jabbed for a few months and not intime for uni start dates

And remember, in Scotland, where schools and year groups:birthdays are 6 months different, half of all school leavers will be 17.

Angrymum22 · 19/07/2021 10:42

In our area they have been inviting and vaccinating 16-18yr olds. Our local GP group have had an extremely successful vaccination program and 90% of the adult population have now had 1st vaccine and 70% have had both vaccines. DS 16 had his first vaccine a month ago.
They are offering block bookings to local schools and sixth forms otherwise the doses they have been supplied with will be wasted.

NotDonna · 19/07/2021 11:41

Great for those in your area @Angrymum22 but not in London and surrounds.

TacoLover · 19/07/2021 11:43

My 17 year old went to a walk in just to see if they would do it and they did!

Carlislemumof4 · 19/07/2021 12:01

Pleased at the news 17 year olds within 3 months of their 18th birthday could be imminently eligible. My eldest is 18 in August, I had glandular fever at the same age and I'm nervous about long Covid for her.

FizziWater · 19/07/2021 13:35

I'm lucky that my children have finished uni but for all those young people about to go in September it makes sense to give them a chance to be fully vaccinated and avoid the scenarios of last year.

NotDonna · 19/07/2021 22:31

So our almost 18’s can get jabbed. Yeah!
Do you know if there needs to be a gap between Pfizer jab and flu jab and what this should be? My eldest should get her 2nd Pfizer jab mid September (if there’s an 8 week gap between 1st & 2nd as per English guidelines). Can she have the flu jab in between? I’ve googled but it’s not clear as Pfizer say 21 days between 1st & 2nd dose so therefore suggest a gap of at least 14 days after 2nd Pfizer before having flu jab. Some sites say 7 days. But U.K. isn’t following Pfizer 21 day gap so I’m a bit unsure. I appreciate that the gap is all about recognising side effects etc rather than any interactions being an issue. Any definite info anywhere else please?

FizziWater · 19/07/2021 22:54

No info @NotDonna but perhaps she could just get the 2nd dose earlier than 8 weeks. It's possible to do as my DS did. He's a 25 year old teacher and all his friends have managed to get 2nd doses at walk in centres much earlier than the official NHS booking system allows.

worriedatthemoment · 19/07/2021 23:25

@Angrymum22 i just tried to book on online system for nearly 18 year old and won't let me
So ds just said great I will finally be old enough for nightclubs etc but can't go as no chance of being double jabbed by then.
Annoying that areas differ the goverment website says over 18's , so seems some areas are sticking to it and others aren't

OP posts:
NotDonna · 20/07/2021 00:19

@worriedatthemoment it was only announced properly at 5pm today so the vaccine centre and website probably won’t be updated yet. He could try a walk in centre.
