CEV and "Freedom Day"

Sunshineanddaisies2021 · 18/07/2021 19:45

I'm CEV for a number of reasons and work in a school and have my own school age children.

The thought of cases being so high, without mitigation and opening everything up tomorrow is making me wonder if I ought to be self shielding again. There's no advice I can find - everything is just "be careful" and "work from home where you can".... except I can't - I'm in school. Now there is no official shielding I can't just work from home as there's no official backing.

I have had Covid already and it was not a pretty sight and I am lucky to still be here. What the heck are CEV people meant to do? Obviously different for everyone but if anyone is in a similar position, what are you going to do?

Thank you.

I'm not being rude here it is a genuine question...

You've had covid. Even though CEV your body fought it off. You've been vaccinated and now have the benefits of natural and vaccine related immunity.

Is it not the case that of you got it again it is likely you would be fine?

I can imagine being worried if you hadn't had it and didn't know what would happen

Thewiseoneincognito · 18/07/2021 20:53

Do what you feel is necessary to protect yourself, the government doesn’t care about CEV people.

Freedom day won’t be for very long though that is a certainty.

HermioneGrunger · 18/07/2021 20:55

I'm the same Op, been double jabbed, had Covid and I'm cev, I was feeling ok about going to work everyday but judging by the amount of people here who state they'll no longer wear a mask, I'm feeling decidedly uneasy again.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 18/07/2021 21:02

The people I live with are routinely vaccinated against or have had the commonly circulating illnesses like measles or chicken pox. They'll play the flu vaccine roulette. But two of them are unvaccinated for Covid and spending 5 days a week indoors with other unvaccinated people.

Perhaps she would be, but for a given value of 'fine'. When I had COVID (I am also CEV), I was in bed for eight weeks, prone, and using a nebuliser four times a day. I counted my lucky stars I didn't end up in hospital, and more than a year later, my lungs are still affected.

It's not just a binary death-or-nothing question for most CEV. It's long-lasting, life-buggering illness, and most of us have had enough of that already.

@Littlemiss74

I take immunosuppressant meds for arthritis so I guess my immune system is suppressed but my consultant has always said its only suppressed a bit. I’ve spoken to him about covid and he didn’t seem too worried as I am on quite a low dose, and no other high risk factors. Still a bit anxious though as who knows how well the vaccines will work for me? Only one way i’m going to find out!

I’ve never been told before this virus about taking any special precautions to protect myself from other viruses, all they ever said was to get the flu jab. I’m thinking the CEV group must itself vary quite widely as to how vulnerable the people within it are.

I have rheumatoid arthritis and the drugs suppress the immune system. Before I started taking them it was drilled into me that they make me more vulnerable to infections and I should avoid contact with people who are ill.
Sunshineanddaisies2021 · 18/07/2021 22:25

@CrouchEndTiger12. Unfortunately Covid attacked my body in a way that I am far worse off health-wise now to be able to fend off another virus.

@MilesJuppIsMyBitch I am sorry to hear that you have also been badly affected by the repercussions of Covid on top of already having underlying health conditions. Flowers

I'm so sorry to hear that 😔

chocolateorangeinhaler · 19/07/2021 07:17

Surely if you are CEV a Petri dish of a school would be the worst place for you to ever work even pre-covid.

Sunshineanddaisies2021 · 19/07/2021 07:27

@chocolateorangeinhaler You're quite right! Although infectious diseases medicine might be right up there too Wink ....However, this is how it is and normally it is fine but it's not fine in a pandemic with such an infectious illness that you can get repeatedly with serious sequelae.

You said in a previous post you used to wfh but just changed jobs and are now working in a school. Was that sensible seeing as you won’t be able to work from home now and you’re clearly worried?

TheKeatingFive · 19/07/2021 07:46

What does your consultant say?

FlatteredFool · 19/07/2021 07:51

Some people just don't get it OP. No idea what it's like to have been told to shield, what shielding was like, how everyday normals became too risky to do. Even a walk outside wasn't possible at first. No food deliveries available for a month before the priority delivery service got going. So many things. I don't know why they post on threads like this.

Kazzyhoward · 19/07/2021 08:01

But what's the alternative? It sounds like some people want everyone to have a miserable life, i.e. lockdowns, closed schools, etc., All that does is spread the misery, i.e. other people's mental health would suffer, some (maybe lots of people) would lose their jobs, some would be financially crippled (i.e. the excluded self employed). There are no winners in any of this. I say that as someone who's OH is CEV due to cancer so I know how hard it is for the CEVs who can't have a "normal" life.
Mickarooni · 19/07/2021 08:30

@Kazzyhoward

I don’t agree with ongoing lockdowns or restrictions but I do understand why CEV people feel anxious. It’s ok to express those concerns. There probably aren’t any solutions.

Sunshineanddaisies2021 · 19/07/2021 08:30

@Racoonworld Yes, it's unfortunate but I didn't have much choice due to circumstances beyond my control. But here I am, in a school in a pandemic, and CEV.

OP posts:
Sunshineanddaisies2021 · 19/07/2021 08:33

@Kazzyhoward
You're right, there are no winners. I am not keen on more lockdowns as so many people have suffered because of them but what I do want the Government to do is to acknowledge the difficult position they are putting CEV people in and mitigate the risks or at least make an attempt to for this group of people.

OP posts:
User72642 · 19/07/2021 08:33

@Kazzyhoward I got the impression the OP was not calling for widespread closures and lockdown etc but more for the government to provide official advice/ support directly to CEV that may enable them to wfh and shield with financial support.

Sunshineanddaisies2021 · 19/07/2021 08:34

@FlatteredFool You've reminded me of those nights awake at 1 or 2am trying to get a delivery slot when they released them. Confused

OP posts:
MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 19/07/2021 08:44

OP, you sound very measured, & much more patient than me Gin

It is surely obvious to most that you don't need to have a solution all planned out when drawing attention to a problem in government policy.

It's been said many times on here, but one of the effects of this governments handling of the pandemic has been to turn vulnerable groups against one another. If our needs are conflicting, (and they are), surely supportive conversations which widen our understanding of one another's positions would be preferable.

Plopping on a thread with snappy sentences like 'what does your consultant say?' Or 'what's the alternative?' is most unhelpful IMO, & seems designed to shut down discussion.
