Laughing stock of the world... Pair of clowns, all the hype before freedom day & look at where the two of them end up...

Exactly @ilovesooty.

It's like the way people laughed at Trump.

The UK is really not enjoying great PR right now. People in Germany are glad to have sensible leaders. They don't understand the attraction of someone like Boris.

DoucheCanoe · 18/07/2021 13:20

@Grellbunt that's exactly why people think it's a big deal.

We are expected to abide by the "stupid rules" they put in place whilst Boris and Co think they can choose to ignore them.

@x2boys I have friends/family in Australia, America, Germany and Poland who all think the guy is a joke.

Orf1abc · 18/07/2021 13:23

@x2boys The flooding situation is terrible, but the regional and national response has been calm and measured. People feel safe because there are competent adults in charge. Compare to here, where the government response to flooding is Boris waving a brush about, and you understand why people are laughing at us.

beentoldcomputersaysno · 18/07/2021 13:27

People are just gobsmacked...a bit like we all were with Trump. We are the "laughing stock".

Suranjeep · 18/07/2021 13:34

The total lack of opposition doesnt help. Starmer is no better

Suranjeep · 18/07/2021 13:35

OK Starmer isnt the clown that Boris is but he's been ineffective throughout all the Covid stuff

Lemonmelonsun · 18/07/2021 13:36

Wasn't Johnson supposed to be doing the big freedom speech tomorrow?
Can he transmit from his isolation?.

Lemonmelonsun · 18/07/2021 13:38

Gellbrunt are you joking??

The far right has never been so prevalent in Germany since the rise of you know who!! Merkel is wildy unpopular.

carcarbinks · 18/07/2021 13:43

My friends abroad feel sorry for us having such an absolute idiot as PM.

aldkj · 18/07/2021 13:50

I'd be happy for them to have daily tests and carry on working, as long as this was extended to the rest of the country, including schools.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 18/07/2021 13:50

I still maintain that Teresa May would have handled this better.

aldkj · 18/07/2021 13:53

Just as well Boris was at Chequers when told to stay in place and isolate. Wasn't that lucky?
Especially as I'm sure he was due to be in Downing Street for some thing press-related today or tomorrow.
Still I'm sure he'll manage a week at Chequers, poor thing. it will help him relate to all those school children stuck in flats doing mass self-isolation of huge yeargroups without even being a close contact of positive case.

Homeontherangeuk · 18/07/2021 13:55

A few weeks ago we had the Matt Hancock affair (literally!) hitting headlines around the world... One rule for him, one for us plebs....
Then the new health minister & Boris declaring they're not going to self isolate despite one of the fools being covid positive & the other a close contact after being in a lengthy meeting with him on Friday...
Basically not leading by example & telling the public the rules don't apply to us....
We are a laughing stock.... We were anyways after Brexit...

I think the global view of England is less Mr Beam and more The Hills Have Eyes. We’re a car crash.

I’ve seen more anti-English sentiment as a result of the football rather than our covid policies though.

It wasn't a result of the football (the sport). It was a result of the football (the nationalism, xenophobia, flag-burning (yes, burning the Italian flag in central London before the game Hmm, the sense of national entitlement, and the sheer arrogance of Brits who think they are the centre of the world).
RuggerHug · 18/07/2021 14:13

Yeah his way of doing things now is the biggest threat to the world regarding this. Until most of the planet is vaccinated we're all going to be dealing with this in some way for awhile. So it's partly awkward 'this is fine' laughter, partly absolute horror.

sashagabadon · 18/07/2021 14:15

Have you guys not been following the floods in Europe. German government was warned 24 hours in advance of extreme flooding in the Rhineland area but did not evacuate the people. Hundreds dead, 12 people have drowned in a care home as not evacuated in time. I really doubt the Germans are watching the Brits “pingdemic “ right now and laughing. I am sure they are horrified at the tragedy unfurling in their own country and asking their government how it could have happened. Have a read of the Sunday paper reports. It’s horrifying the loss of life and destruction. Boris and Rishi self isolating is trivia.

Lemonmelonsun · 18/07/2021 14:17

Quite sasha, I'm no fan of the this carry on government but some of the comments Confused

The Health Minister never said he wasn't going to isolate. I assume you meant the Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Clearly not im watching sky news, the scenes are awful, but of course all they care about is what's going on in the UK according to mumsnet.
sashagabadon · 18/07/2021 14:19

Not to mention the coup going in South Africa right now. Honesty some people here are so ridiculous that they think the world gives two hoots whether our health secretary has Covid or not

sashagabadon · 18/07/2021 14:20

These posters should be ashamed but they won’t be

MoonlightWanderer · 18/07/2021 14:22

@LucilleTheVampireBat

"Laughing stock of the world" - really?

I keep reading variations of this. Do people really think anyone is sitting at home in Germany or Poland or America or Egypt and "laughing" at the UK? It's such a bizarre statement.

My friends abroad are not laughing. More like watching a car crash happening in absolute horror.

Our national newspaper had the headline "More than 50,000 new cases in one day and they still plan to end lockdown".

The UK is definitely getting a lot of attention abroad and none of it is good!

DoucheCanoe · 18/07/2021 14:23

Covid and Boris being known worldwide as a bumbling buffoon was happening long before the recent natural disasters across Europe.

No one has said that the world is watching and reacting right this second.

It's not a new thing, this is just another reminder.

What do the Germans think about the 12 dead in the care home? Or are they all too busy laughing at Boris self isolating in chequers?
